Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
My biggest issue was figuring how to get the rear dampers up and in the mounts.
Leading evidence: 'figuring how' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'figuring how' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace before i owned it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I don't think they've been changed before I owned it.

I replaced my entire suspension with Koni shocks and OEM arms.

Suggestion
Ok so what is the reality that someone new to wrenching, so far has only replaced motor mounts, could do this on their own as a project?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I need to replace at least my front springs on an '02 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. I'd quite like to lower the car so thinking of doing all 4 springs. I've had a quote for springs only (1,420) or springs and shock (2,600). The car's done 70k miles and I'm really not sure whether to get it all replaced or keep the current shocks. I don't think they've been changed before I owned it.
Are shocks something that will need replacing soon anyway at that mileage?
Your shocks and struts are just about 21 years old. Replace them, along with the strut bushings. Get the springs, and then get a 4 wheel alignment. You will need an alignment after installing lowering springs anyways, so might as well do it all at once.
I would always replace shocks. You need to control old springs, and you will end up with a leaker. As you are are aiming for lowering replace with a lowering compatible Shock. As an Australian I imported 441+Feals (The Feals are great) over my existing Bilstein B8 Vogtland lowering springs, which was very firm on a 996.1. Coupe. In Australia. For a Cabrio Non lowering approaches are Stock springs, Bilstein B6 for handling, and Koni for OEM plus.
Ok so what is the reality that someone new to wrenching, so far has only replaced motor mounts, could do this on their own as a project? My 100k '99 needs new suspension and while I WANT to get more proficient under the car, part of me thinks it makes more sense for an indy with a lift to do it all..... time+money vs life-experiences+self-worth.
You definitely want to do what’s right by your P car and get your fingers scraped doing what you can yourself, so I say you get to it. Proper prep is your key to success. I caveat with the presumption you’ll read and watch every source you can to learn what you’ll need for tools and procedures. Get as smart as possible before you put the car up on stands. Know or have reference to torque values, assembly order for the components on the dampers, take pictures of everything you touch as a baseline to compare your assembly results. Budget enough time for trial and error.
You’ll need another set of hands to do the top mounts and secure the dampers properly. Do both rears or fronts as a pair to apply lessons learned from the first suspension corner you tackle. If you plan two days of 8 hours each you’ll be about right if all the bolts come off properly and you won’t ever feel rushed. Once you’ve done a rear corner properly, the rest of the work flows pretty nicely. The arms, sways, tie rods are all pretty straight forward to replace. I recall one bolt on the rears, maybe the caster control, where it’s a real tight fit due to a structural clearance. My biggest issue was figuring how to get the rear dampers up and in the mounts. Once that was sorted, the other 3 corners were pretty fun.
After you’ve done your suspension and alignment, you’ll feel the purest satisfaction when you get back behind the wheel of your proper sports car!
That's exactly why I want to do it, it just seems daunting - even in what you outlined above.
Who has 8 hours a day to spare?! I barely can find 20 mins alone time, between Work needs, Wife's needs, Kid's needs, and puppy needs!
