Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Before noticing the res was empty when was the last time you checked the coolant level..?
Leading evidence: 'Check coolant level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coolant level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Do yourself and the car a favor by getting familiar with it mechanically so you are able to at least check oil and coolant levels on a regular basis.

the pressure test should expose the source of the leak.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I own a 2000 996 C2 coupe with 55K miles. When I put my car away for the winter, I noticed after my last drive that my coolant reservoir was empty. Driving temp has been normal at 185. My indy gets this first thing every spring and changes and inspects the oil and filter. He does preventative maintenance every year and so far has not touched the coolant system. No visible signs of intermix. I drive this <1K a year. No leaks in the garage. Is it normal for there to be some loss of coolant? The cap seems fine but what to I know. Not a wrencher. Thanks for any thoughts.
It should have turned on the light in the temp gauge, on my 03 its at about 2:00 on the gage..
According to all my local shops, and many others... ONLY use the Porsche res, the savings isn't worth the pull and replace twice...
MIne had a knockoff that was new lasted less than 6 months.
The one thing I have learned in 10 years of 996 ownership, the hard way I might add, is to not ignore the cooling system! The result of ignoring the M96 engine's cooling system is often a cracked head or worse. Do yourself and the car a favor by getting familiar with it mechanically so you are able to at least check oil and coolant levels on a regular basis. Your wallet and your Porsche will thank you for it. Best of luck.
save yourself some time and money, and start with pressure testing the system. the coolant system shouldn't lose coolant.
the pressure test should expose the source of the leak.
primary suspects:
1.coolant reservoir.
2. water pump.
3. oil cooler O-Rings.
with options 1&2 you would most likely see some coolant on your garage floor after a short derive.
Typically the coolant reservoir cracks are not visible and don't leak unless under pressure. Mine would only leak after a long-ish drive. It would puke about a pint or more of coolant but never emptied.
