Im in it to get a low mileage example, which will be repaired according to my standarts.

After 2016 it seems, that it changed owners until the crash in 2021 with 33k miles on the clock.

Everything looks like regular service, except for 06/27/2016 visit included some "big work", such as clutch, ignition coils, coolant reservoir change, drive belts change etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello to you all!
I just bought my first Porsche. Yes its a 911 and yes its a 996. Im from Kaunas, Lithuania, Europe. And the 996 I bought from insurance auction is from Tennessee. As it is now in a container somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic, I thought Ill give it a shot and try to look for previous owners. The goal is to find out what kind of work was done on the car, if the IMS was addressed etc.
What I know about the car:
It was shipped to NYC from Germany in 1999
Sold to someone in Tennessee with 20miles on the clock in Nov, 2000
Sold to someone in Tennessee with 20000 miles in Nov, 2004
Sold to someone in Tennesse with ???? miles in Dec, 2016
Car was damaged in the front (im thinking while stationary, because airbags did not deploy) in Apr, 2021 with 31000 miles on the clock,
As I mentioned before car is arctic silver, black leather interior, Hi-Fi system as an optional extra and it has Porsche PCCM plus installed. Everything else seems original and very well maintained (except for the damaged front, obviously).
I attach a couple of pics (one picture is worth a thousand words). Maybe someone will point me into right direction
p.s. Yes I will fix it and yes it will drive perfectly
A VIN number will help, but there's not much more you can obtain from the specifics that are found on CarFax type reports. However, I've contacted CarFax to get information on the police department that handled an accident. You can contact the specific police department to see if they'll provide any more information on what happened in an accident. They may or may not. Even the dealership doesn't want to release specific private information. Many have tried and failed.
This looks like a nasty accident. I'm surprised the airbags didn't deploy, but it could have been a stationary accident (e.g. sitting at a red light and another vehicle hits the Porsche). Porsche uses a deceleration algorithm to trigger front airbags in the 996. Therefore, either the car was hit while parked or in a stationary traffic accident, IMHO. This is going to be expensive to repair and it looks like you have some serious structural damage to the body of the car.
Good luck!
I think your problem is not IMS, but car body., and how to restore it to street legal. I would say that havent been in littlle parking accident, but way more serious. I wonder if there are something wrong with airbags, I think that theys should definetly blow situation like this. Hope that that you didint pay this too much.
Please keep us updated, this could turn into a great all time thread. Not gonna ask what you paid for it but I am curious what it cost to ship from TN to
Kaunas, Lithuania, Europe? Best of Luck
Good excuse to get a good frame bench, clamp it down ... and get to work.Doesn’t look that bad to me ,windshield not being broken is a good sign.High hit is better less damage. If you are doing it yourself lots of labor involved.Enjoy the project please keep us informed.
It arrives in 3-4weeks, I will try to document the whole process and share it here.
TBH, it doesnt seem that bad to me, as doors open and close perfectly, windscreen is in place and not damaged. Weve revived cars which seen worse
)
I will keep you guys updated.
p.s. with shipping and customs it will be 10kUSD, Im aiming to fix it with 5kUSD. In europe its a 25-30kUSD car
Not in the US, perhaps.
OP, if you have the VIN, pop it into Google. I found an old listing from when my car was sold a year ago including tons of pictures and into. I also found the 993 build sticker thread where someone interested in buying the car did a bunch of research and posted it.
You can buy decent uncrashed 996 for 15k-20 in europe as Japan imported example. I seriously doubt that someone pays full price if they know that car has been crashed.
I see that everyone here is worried about my money
guys dont be!
First of all, Im in this not to flip this car and make money. Im in it to get a low mileage example, which will be repaired according to my standarts. You never know what has happend to the clean title ones listed in the marketplace. In the end I believe that total cost will be less or equal compared to the prices of such cars in supply in european market (with left side steering).
Im planning to fully document the process, and share it with you. I trust fully know-how, infrastructure and the team Ill be working with on this project. After seeing it, I hope you will too.
In my opinion 996.1s are a thing of a beauty and hugely undervalued cars compared to the emotion they create. Silver C2 coupe, with manual transmission was exactly what I was looking for.
What can I say, I like broken things.
#kintsugi
Do you mean the car or the steering wheel? I was thinking about momo prototipo switch, but I think it fits 930, 964 perfectly, but Im not sure on 996.
for now plan is to go all original.
Pretty sure he means the car. Early builds I believe came with the 4 spoke used in the 993. Please post the VIN so we can all see what you are starting with. If you aren't worried about the $ then I'm not worried about the $, lol. Best of Luck!
Frame rack or a new front tub - either are pretty straight forward for someone that knows what they're doing and has the right tools / jigs..
If you're inspired to fix it - only time and money.
Please do keep us updated, I love these kind of restorations and wish you the best of luck.
So while the car is travelling, I did some more digging into its history.
I attach "make" card report from Suncoast Porsche. I'm not sure what was standard and what was optional during that time, so maybe you guys can comment.
I found a detail service history 2007-2016. Everything looks like regular service, except for 06/27/2016 visit included some "big work", such as clutch, ignition coils, coolant reservoir change, drive belts change etc. Do you think they wouldn't address IMSB during this? The only explanation I see, that they didn't because it was already done earlier. As the owner, looks like, took good care of the car. I already emailed the Eurotech, lets see if they'll respond.
After 2016 it seems, that it changed owners until the crash in 2021 with 33k miles on the clock. During this period no official services were recorded.
Do you think originally (from the factory) it came with amber or clear turnsignals and backlights?
P.s. I bought both front panels, EU bumpers back and front in total for 750 USD (needs repaint, as they are all different colours). Now I'm looking for the headlights. Everything else I'll order when the car is here and the scope of the work is more clear.

Hey guys! After 4 months of hard labour (parts search, thorough engine check, bodywork, paint prep) the silver lady is straight as a missile and ready for paintshop. Total cost so far 4.5kEUR (5kUSD)
Im glad it didnt have any serious structural damage!
Sweeeeet job Dude! Sounds like this was no issue for you and that you have the skills for such work!!! Keep us posted with the final pics and your thoughts of your new-found love.
it did! Only difference on mine the damage was more concentrated on the passenger side not the center as in the video. I managed to save the original tub, but had to replace the frame rail and supporting panel.
Apart from that the approach and the process was very similar. Thanks for the video shared, I didnt see it before.
p.s. the donor car was blue 😀
Just to be clear, Im more of a project, finance and quality manager in this than a hands on guy. Initially my plan was to document each step, but due to time constraint we focused on doing the work rather than documenting it. I will check him out, thanks!
Also I added these R18 turbo spins (993*** part number) for dirt cheap (250USD for 4 rims), and they did not require much work (just a repaint)
p.s. Thats me, happy about the catch
)
Assembly is going a bit slower than expected, last missing parts are arriving just before Christmas.
So I hope this to be the best Christmas gift to myself
)
great question. I had an internal debate (with myself) clear vs amber, and chose clear. Amber would be the more authentic option, however I really feel that clear looks way better with arctic silver and black interior. Its more continuos and clean look. I love amber with other colours (red, green, blue) and beige or red interiors, it has nice vintage spice.
The repair is done.
next up oil, filter change and waiting for spring
Not be bored of waiting Im planningin a slight drop (3cm) and suspension upgrade, gundo hack + air intake hack, wheel switch and spacers.
will keep you updated
