His credit union ran the book value on it at $32,000, BTW.

Hello,
Been reading this forum the last couple of days. Amazing information. Thanks everyone. I have never been a 911 owner and never thought I could really afford it but the 996 seems to get a bad rap unfairly IMHO. That is good for me since it seems to make a childhood dream car of mine affordable. Should I be thanking the Naysayers?
What does the forum think of this one? I am in DFW so it is convenient obviously.
Too many miles? Besides the obvious things to confirm, thanks to the stickied threads, what else?
Is that a factory Nav?
Can we still update it?
Anything that can be seen that is not factory on it?
Ad says 17" wheels but that is a mistake most likely and they are 18" right?
http://www.parkplace.com/jaguar/plan...he-911-jp2569a
Thanks in advance for any advise and opinions.
On a side note, if this is an amazing deal and this thread gets a member to swoop in and buy it, at least hook me up with a spiff or something.
More pictures in link.
Seems like a very fair deal to me. Go for it! Wheels are most likely 18s but if they were 17s that would be great IMHO. I actually want 17 inch wheels because they allow for a taller sidewall and a more comfortable ride. Bigger wheels are not better. For daily street driving these large wheels and almost non-existent side walls make for a bumpy ride!
Pretty good deal from afar. Check it out, take a long test drive and be diligent about the service history. I love me some 40th Anniversary Edition Carrera!
Those are the carrera 11 wheels 18 inch , but on the 40 they are polished .
I've got the regular carrera 2 wheels on my car they ride fine as do my 18 inch cup iv wheels with winter tires on them , It's 19s that get a bit silly.
It's a fair price but lower than I'd expect , get a full ppi done , especialy looking at any accident damage repairs . It's priced low enough to make me curious .
If it's ppi goes well , buy it!
I would .
As a point og reference , la dismantlers are asking near that just for a 40th motor and the lsd transmission
Even with the miles it shows to be a great deal. NADA online shows "Rough Trade-In" at $26,175.00. So the price kind of scares me to be so low.
The VIN shows it has 21 records on CarFax but I don't have a membership to see what those are. I will pay for one if I get serious.

Is this a price that if I drive it up another 20k miles over 2 or 3 years that I could get most of my money back on a resale? I wish I could read the future but it seems like this is a car that may be at a turning point to the positive in value.
Price is "too good to be true" IMHO for a 40th. Hopefully a PPI will reveal why. However, it may just be an awesome deal. Best of luck.
P.S. if you are already thinking about resale....DON'T!
996's are not lot magnets - dealerships don't really want 996's sitting around. We can argue about how stupid that is, but a lot of the cars are being priced to move. I'd take a long, careful look and jump on it. Sure, there might be an issue. If 996's were action figures, 40AE would be the limited edition Al Gore action figure...
To OP's first question: Yes, we have the naysayers to thank for getting into amazing cars at a discount price. Even considering the 996's constantly-maligned issues, the 996 is a steak dinner at fast-food prices.
"Less than 88,029" does seem both oddly specific and rather high for "showroom new."
90K miles is the main reason for the lower price. Plus, the collectibility of the AE has been somewhat diminshed by the rejiggered audio. Once you've opened the box and messed with the toy, it's not as collectible.
Thanks! Seems like Hans at RUF is the man. Good news is his location is only 12.5 miles south of my home.
One question I forgot to ask. Since I am far from a hands on car guy, Is it going to cost me a truckload for yearly maintenance assuming no major problems arise?
Ruf seems to have a clean looking 2000 -

"Is it going to cost me a truckload for yearly maintenance assuming no major problems arise?"
No.
But if you don't get a PPI you may have an $8000 roller on your hands in a hurry.
Lots a red flags with this ad.For example, top of the list of features of this car,yes the very first most important feature is,drum roll please:
"NATURAL GREY FLOOR MAT W/PORSCHE LETTERING"
Park Place are experts in excellent floor mats?
Oh. I am Edumucating myself thanks to this forum. I will spend the money on a PPI whether I purchase or not. My fear is body damage or something else as well. I will be diligent on this because this price is at the top of my budget.
I would go check it out, & play dumb, you don't know or care about any anniversary edition. Don't assume they are assembled any better than a standard 996. get a PPI
Not bad for a 11 year old car. Of course this is the 1st Porsche I have looked at in 5 or so years.
#804 40th anniversary.
Factory 18" polished even though ad say 17".
Needs some TLC but seems minor. Headlight restoration needed.
The Front left air dam is missing a clip.
The drivers side visor vanity mirror flip up cover is broke off and in the glove box.
Car came with factory nav, (Still has factory CD sleeve with Nav Cd's), but taken out for Pioneer set up with bluetooth mic in cubby along with a 2 cords for usb and standard 3.5 audio jack. (see picture below)
Sales guy said they did not have factory radio or speakers. Does have factory CD Changer still but I am not sure it works with aftermarket Pioneer.
Car Fax does not show any damage. Salesman was not aware of any as well. 3 owner car but owner in middle only looks like an auction company because it shows as a lease and only 1 month?
Big gap in maintenance records on CarFax from 9/2006-5/2010?
Final Owner maintenance records does not show up on CarFax but salesman gave me the records from the Firestone dealership in Tyler, TX. Attached as well. Looks like most recent owner spent about $7000 on maintenance from 2012-2015. Clutch replaced twice in 2012 and 6/2015. What does that say? Quite a few other things done as well. I am sure you Porsche pros can decipher what these other repairs show.
The Jaguar dealership has had it for 28 days. Dropped price $2000 a week ago. he said he is talking to a guy from Kansas about it but not committed. Salesman said they have had quite a bit of interest because it is a 40th anniversary edition. I told sales guy I was just kicking tires and he wasn't sure of anymore price concessions but it was close to probably going to auction.
I did not beat him up on price or anything because I was not ready to purchase. My speculation is the car could be had for at best $20,500 and at worst $22,000. Sounds like they are at the point they just want it gone.
This is the very 1st one I have looked at and I went into this idea just 2 days ago hoping to find a 996 for about 15k but this is tempting but I probably won't spend this much. Hopefully, if I don't change my mind, someone from this forum picks this up...assuming it has a clean PPI
The attached information should be helpful for anyone considering that is not ready to call about it.
+996
This looks to be a great deal assuming the original x51/lsd setup is still in there.
Carfax looks clean. Just click on their site and check it out. However the auction and change of hands does raise a red flag a bit, especially the owner that owned it for only a month. I'm wondering what happened during that ownership. For a model like this, I don't see how it could go to auction unless it was traded in at a Chevy dealer and they didn't know what they had.
X51 is the option code for the Carrera Power Kit which adds 25HP to the base engine. LSD is the limited slip differential. These are both options that were part of the 40th Anniversary package.
Seems like a pretty good price on that car to me.
40th Anniversary Editions have a special option coded X51 that gives it more power over the standard Carrera output.
Also came with a factory installed Limited Slip Differential. Both factors that added to its conductibility.
Show up with 20k in cash, and have 1500$. Hiding in you're back pocket just in case. Expect some issues, but if Trans/motor/ don't measure up in ppi I'd walk. Suspiciously low priced though.
Well, I would just do a PPI on it and not sweat the rest of the issues. It is a 12 year old used car - you can't expect a detailed, crystal clear provenance. Maybe the previous owners viewed it as (gasp) "just a car." I mean, someone put 88,029 miles on it, so obviously they weren't of a mindset to make it a garage queen.
If you are really concerned about the stereo not being stock, you could pick up the missing stock equipment for next to nothing on ebay and throw it in a box in your garage to hand off to the next buyer. But, I bought my current car with an aftermarket double DIN unit with modern NAV and bluetooth and the other bells and whistles. I cannot imagine going back to stock - the newer stereo systems spoil you.
The big plus of this car over buying a $15k 996 is the 40th AE. Not only do you get some nice goodies with that package, it is the most likely of the normally aspirated 996s to become highly desirable in the future. Note that I didn't say "collectible" - I don't think really any 996 will become truly "collectible", and frankly we don't want them to become collectible. These cars were meant to be driven and enjoyed, not to sit in a garage. I applaud the previous owners who put 88k miles on this car - that's exactly what Dr. Porsche intended. So buy and drive it and enjoy it. Then, when/if you ever decide to sell it, you'll have the advantage that it is a highly desirable model, no matter if it has 95k miles or 150k miles. It will sell quicker and for more money than a comparable non-40th AE model 996.
Better go write the check before I get there.
Kidding, I'm not in the market for a silver car. If I was, I would go get it, and have the pan removed, and bottom end inspected then, write - the - check.
FWIW, just checking the Manheim dealer auction market report for that year/make/model car, I think it would bring $22k at auction. The Dallas auctions are a good place to get a great deal, but I really think they'd have someone there (some specialty dealers) that would recognize it as a 40th AE and spend that much on it.
My 2012 Passat TDI puts out way too much pollution to drive fast. Thanks VW. (I understand fast is relative in a 4 cyl diesel).
Don't forget to paypal me my finders fee.
Interesting. There is a 99% chance that is the Auction they would use as well and you know the dealer is looking at the same thing you are.
Assuming they would get 22k at Auction, What kind of costs come of that 22k for the dealer?
For the seller, a seller's fee of around $250. If they do a Condition Report, it will be around another $100 (I've not used their Condition Report service myself when selling a car, but most dealers do). Plus the cost of transporting it to the auction. Since it's already on the showroom floor, it won't need a detail/wash.
I know you just started looking, but wow, that seems like a "Paul Wateloo" kind of deal. I don't think you'll find another one like that again for a long time.
I personally would skip a 15K car, unless you don't mind not having the car that you want after you buy it. For perspective, I bought a really nice 99 with a ton of options, aero kit and 31K miles a year ago for $22K, I paid extra for the low miles.
This car has had really regular oil changes, lots of maintenance, new water pump, new belts, new clutch, new AOS, new coolant.....that's money you won't have to spend and you'll sleep good at night.
I don't know if you actually looked at the car, but if you go back, bring a flash light and look at the engine serial number, it's on the bottom left of the engine, just near (inboard) the foward left hand bank forward header. You can't miss it. If it has an "AT" somewhere in the number, the engine was replaced, if not, it's most likely original.
I would make an offer if you want one of these cars, great deal, you won't find this again soon. $22K is wholesale.
From Wikipedia:
Porsche celebrated the 911's 40-year history in 2003, using the slogan, "40 Jahre 911/40 Fast Years". The company also introduced the 996 "40th Anniversary Edition" for model year 2004. This model has the 996 Turbo's front-end, and was available only in Carrera GT Silver exterior paint. Other unique features included: X51 power kit, turbo radiators, limited slip differential, sport suspension, polished 5-spoke alloys (unique to this model), GT3 side skirts, natural gray leather interior (with luggage set to match), sports seats (there was a power comfort seat option), polished exhaust tips, heated seats (option in Latin America), litronic bi-xenon headlights, special dynamic sealed panels, and a special "40 Jahre 911" logo on the back. The power was increased from 316 to 345 hp (257 kW). Only 1,963 units were made, to commemorate 1963—the year the 911 was introduced.
It looks like somebody upgraded the steering wheel, has focal speakers.....Dude....jump on this.
This is an easy one:
Negotiate price and let the seller know you're doing a PPI and will split the cost of items found - and give seller a deposit to hold the car and show you mean business
Schedule and perform PPI at a mechnaic of your choosing - one with 996 experience (you cover the cost)
Split the difference of the needs unearthed by the PPI
Buy the car and enjoy getting a smoking deal from a motivated seller on a really great car.
Thanks. A side note, It was pretty dirty actually. It was out back somewhere because he had to pull it back on the lot for me. I assume it was on floor just for pictures...28 days ago.
I've never seen the steering wheel in the 40th version....this was the picture I was referring to:
I did not know they came with the perferations at 3 and 9 o'clock. That's why I thought it was an upgrade. Never seen it before.
I just got this email from the salesman. So tempting.
"The rock bottom price that he would take for the car is $20,900 he said he can get that through the auction however he would rather have it as a retail count for the store."
I would get a PPI done on this thing as quick as you can then write the check. As a matter of fact, I would write a deposit check on it
before
the PPI. At $20,900, assuming no major PPI issues, this car is a steal. A PPI will always find something, it's OK just as long as it is minor stuff. And don't use minor stuff to beat up the seller as it is already at a wholesale price (don't be that guy).
You will never lose a penny on this car buying at $20,900. If you don't like the car, you'll be able to sell it in 5 months from now for $25k when the spring car-buying fever hits. Right now is the best time to buy a car like this. For those of you out there thinking about buying, this time of the year is THE time to buy. I see it every year. There are actually wholesalers who will go out to the auction this time of the year to buy cars and turn around after the first of the year and sell the same cars at the same auction. Even with buyers and sellers fees, they still make a profit. All of the dealers will begin loading up their lots with inventory in January and February to catch the tax refund and spring fever buyers. You don't see the market fluctuate so much with 4x4 and AWD cars, but for sports cars and convertibles, it's significant.
And by the way, you won't want to sell it - these are fantastic cars. Getting a steal shouldn't be the main reason for buying a Porsche - it is about enjoying the car. But, there's not a thing wrong with knowing that if for some reason you do need or want to sell the car, you can always get your money back out of it. That's great logic for when you speak to the wife to get permission, also.
Don't worry KC, I've already bought a plane ticket and told the sales guy over the phone that I'll bring up the price to $21k.
I'll then wrap it in red and plastidip the wheels black for a truly unique anniversary.
I am imagining.... mc4saints handing over the phone to his wife, "Honey, my attorney is on the phone and wants to talk to you." LOL
Seriously though, what KCattorney said is good advice. It is a good time to buy a sports car, especially a convertible. I know the one you are looking at is not a conv... but just saying. Good luck!!
If I had run across this car, I wouldn't have told anyone about it...this has definite flip potential in the right hands.
It also has potential to have engine oil full of sparkly things.
I understand. I am so torn on it I almost wish one of you would buy it. Just seems like it is too good to be true. How much is a PPI running these days?
You Serious? If so, Hans at Ruf seems to be the guy locally to do PPI. That is based on these forums of course. The Salesman I was speaking with was Caleb Hernandez. He was very helpful today so at least give him the business.
I hate to miss out on it but at least I could live vicariously through you if you buy it.
I think (hope) folks are doing the right thing and waiting to get the go ahead from you before seriously pursuing this one. So how serious are you? Are you taking it in for a PPI? Or is this car fair game for others who might be interested?
I really appreciate the thoughts. If someone else buys it, even though they don't need my go ahead, It is fine. I am 70 30 towards buying it but I am not the type to rush into it. At least if someone from this forum buys it... It would be cool to know who.
Good news for me that I am an internet fraud I guess since it gives me more time to make my decision if none of you are taking the bait.
On a side note, for the few believers I have left, Hans at RAC performance charges $300 for a PPI.
Pretty tough crowd around here. You need thick skin to hang with this bunch... it's all in good fun though!
Do you have plans to bring it in for a PPI? I emailed the dealership and the guy who responded said he metered the paint and it appears that the front hood and parts of the fenders have been repainted so you will want them to look closely for signs of it having been in an accident...
I aint mad at all. The interwebs are always fun. If this doesn't work out I may just find me a boxter roller for really cheap just to be allowed to keep posting.
I am still 70/30 toward buying and getting a PPI. Tuesday of next week is Hans 1st available. Thanks for the info on the paint in the front. I will for sure have them check it closely.
Doing more research. Jaguar of Plano is part of a big conglomerate of dealerships in DFW that includes a Porsche dealer.
http://www.parkplace.com/#
Why wouldn't they just put at the Porsche dealer to sell it? Might be another red flag? Sorry to keep whipping everyone's *** on this. I don't want to throw $300 at a ppi if something is fishy.
Because a Porsche dealership doesn't want ancient inventory on the lot, dude. Anything else that old would have been wholesale/auction material - but the 911 is still worth trying to sell retail.
Porsche dealerships aren't fans of having much CPO stuff on the lot - they DEFINITELY don't want a stock of dirt cheap, as-is, no-warranty $20K 996's sitting around when what they want to sell are $130K new cars.
If you're a Chrysler dealer, though, maybe an old 911 isn't all that bad compared to the new inventory you have to offer...
Buddy,
Stop asking questions, schedule a ppi, put down small refundable deposit to hold the car, go through with PPI, and if all things check out with some margin for small repair buy the car at $20,900. Having read all eight pages of this thread I think I'm about the 20th person to tell you this. This car is a smoking deal at that price if all is kosher, maybe even better than the deal I got on my car, and that was a find. As a matter fact I didn't even have a PPI done on my car, I sent him a deposit jumped on a jet and picked up the car end of story.
^^ I agree. Makes no sense so far.
His first post says that this car is his childhood dream. Then, everyone tells hime that it is a phenomenal deal, but he should get it inspected. Then he says he hopes someone else here buys it. Then he says he can't decide. Crazy stuff. Maybe he suffers from aboulomania?
Unless you can competently perform your own PPI, how else would you find/flush out whatever is fishy (if any). Small price to pay vs not doing so....when WHAM! That something FISHY rears its ugly head and you might then be looking at a worse case scenario of needing a new engine.....making the cost of the PPI "cheap"
Thanks for all the input guys and gals but I have decided against buying the car. Just not the right time for me and my family.
They really want to get rid of it though. Price dropped online to 19999. Probably can be had for 19500 or better.
All the conspiracy theories about me have been fun but I am really just some dude enamored with the 911 that knows very little about them.
Hopefully someone here gives the car a good home.
Yeah, I'm not an AE fan (I still can't believe Porsche decided on silver for a "special" 996) - but damn, someone needs to jump on that (or go take a look and explain to everyone why it's selling for less than it should be).
I did go look at it but I don't know what to look for. I posted my description earlier. Also, someone else called and had paint measured and looks like front bumper and fenders have been possibly painted. From the picture below, to me anyways, the left headlight looks to close to hood and to far from fender. That same light seems more discolerd as well. Might be no big deal to fix or too minor to mess with. Does have a clean title and car fax buy back guarantee....whatever that means?
I have been emailing with the dealership and asked if they are aware of any accident history. We'll see what they have to say... I'm real tempted but a little hesitant not being able to see it in person...
I called Hans at RAC and he said the dealer usually will have cars delivered to him for PPI. The dealer told me no problem on a refundable deposit contingent on satisfaction with PPI. As long as I didn't keep Car more than a day.
That being said I bet that front end has had at least a minor repair based on the picture I posted earlier.
Left front headlight and fender replaced along with headlight bracket. That's my diagnosis and of that I am fairly sure. The headlight brackets comes from the factor with 3 set screws to mount the headlight correctly and get the correct gaps. It is a long and complicated process to get it right. Probably the work was done by a non Porsche body shop who put the headlight bracket in place and did not know this.
Paralysis by analysis. Not a huge risk in buying this car sub-$20k after a satisfactory PPI. It's not like it has a salvage title. Probably was a minor fender bender or more likely a respray due to rock chips since Carfax is clean.
Completely agree. What in the heck are you guys waiting for on this car? I could tell the OP was going into this half hearted and was waiting for the "well, it's just not the right time for me blah blah blah" post. Get a PPI and, if most everything checks out, there is little risk in this car for $20K.
The risk could be only, what, about $200 for a bodyshop PPI in order to decide if it's then worth the mechanical PPI. 'mc4saints' drives the car first before he arranges the bodyshop PPI and of course finds it's the car of his dreams. 'mc4saints', really, anybody, needs the bodyshop PPI because we've focused in on a misfit headlamp and fender that 'dgks6' considers bad bodyshop work, never mind the mismatched lack of CGT level silver repaint on the front. Looking at the dealer picture of the hood you can see headlamp and fender slide up 1/4 inch towards the A pillar. Is that fender also now very close to the front of the driver's door? The dealer doesn't show the car profile on that side. You need to know with fair certainty that you're not going to be stuck with continually problematic, maybe unrepairable alignment, no? And then, down the road maybe the poorly re-rustproofed internal body work begins to show corrosion. What other implications am I missing? Is it really then worth $19,500 even though shy of salvage level damage? (It should take a high degree of damage to write off a 40 Jarhe car.) That to me is the main hurdle in this. If the accident damage and minimally acceptable repairs were significantly below salvage level, only then would I go ahead with the RUF PPI? Gotta say, though, many of us have found this a gripping story. I'm hoping for a Hollywood ending to the most involving thread on a car purchase in a long time.
Just joined today and excited to buy my first Porsche. Been perusing the boards for some time and finally decided to become a member.
Saw this post in the classified section and thought this car looks like an interesting first buy for a newbie like me if the OP and the other members don't buy it.
What is the big depreciation hit if the car did indeed have body work done? I can understand the body parts not put back on properly and alignment issues but the risk reward proposition seems to be pretty high assuming the PPI comes back clean.
May have a to take a trip up to Dallas.
This car is fair game so I wouldn't worry too much about anyone having "dibs". Maybe I missed it, but is there any evidence of accident damage other than purely speculating on a few dealer photos. I'm finding this all very fascinating as well.
I will gladly set up a go fund me donation page and take the car to get a ppi at rac. $300 for ppi. Will not charge for my time since I am curious of findings as well.
I suspect that this car will be gone shortly. Frankly I am surprised it didn't sell yesterday at $19,999. If I was still shopping for the turbo, I might have bought this one just to drive while waiting for the right car to come along as you can wholesale this one come March for $20k easily and probably private party sell it for $23k or $24k this spring.
Fun stuff all around here, but I think you might be exceeding the bruh-ly love aspect of the 996 forum with the 'go fund me' gambit. Well, I know you're not serious. The love here will go as far as dispensing wisdom of potentially a many bucks saving level, but no direct cash infusion, eh, bruh? But really, I'd get the autobody PPI before the RUF one.
We do these kind of repairs in a business I'm involved in. But this standard of work is odd.
Paint Match : with the sophisticated technology at our local paint supplier - who is nothing special - the match is exact, almost every time. And if it is not ,we shoot again with a corrected color while all the masking is still there. Metallics are a bit more difficult but this is a stock color. So it indicates a lack of skill/care.
Alignment: when pulling out ,just follow the data books for the correct dimensions for the hard points. A regular tape measure is all you need. Just keep pulling and tweaking until it is right. We don't regard this as a skilled task - just patience and care.
After fitting the panel there is usually enough adjustment to get alignment/gaps correct .If you get the basic pulling done correctly ,the final fitting is not difficult to get correct.Maybe a bit tedious.
Now here's the kicker - we are fixing & flipping ex-rental cars for use as daily drivers in the $10K range.
On a car like this, why wouldn't they do better job ? Lack of skill, lack of interest, lack of money ?
The PPI may reveal that deep under the picky cosmetic issues there are reasons why it was impossible to get the correct basic dimensions.
At this price, surely it would make a great Track Car?
Autobody PPI results might preclude getting the mechanical PPI. If you were to find out from the autobody PPI that there were serious body/chassis integrity issues, would you be still interested enough in the car to bother going further and spending $300 for the RUF mechanical PPI (never mind going to RUF some other time on a better 996 prospect - be the Curious Cat then)?
I understand now. I thought you were saying autobody was another ppi like Ruf. Hans at ruf did say they check chassis and measure the paint and so on as part of that $300.

Ah, that might be enough then, if Hans is really able to solidly analyze damage repairs. But didn't you also say that Hans does PPIs on the Jaguar dealership Porsches? He would have seen this car already then, no? Or am I misunderstanding that? 'Schnell Gelb' is also adding weight here to the autobody concern.
We do hear that sometimes accidents don't get reported, if they're not going through insurance for example or they don't want to expose themselves to police charges. If one is fronting the whole repair bill in that case, one is more likely to get the kind of cheap shoddy repair this car may have had. Sometimes seriously wrecked cars are advertised as having no Carfax report so that rebuilders can ultimately pass them off as clean no accident cars.
You would think so but none of the maintenance from the previous owner showed up including both clutch replacements. See my attachments earlier. The Firestone in Tyler tx that did the work. Small town USA body shop not reporting work possibly?
8 pages, wow...
Someone needs to buy this thing already to put this thread out of it's misery.
Even though I have a 996 already, if a local is willing to check out some key points(I'll pm on the key points), I'd consider a fly in/drive back deal.
Just got this email.....Who was it? Maybe someone here. All I know it was someone local to DFW.
"Sorry to let you know the vehicle has been sold if I get anything else in I will let you know"
What's the point of posting up that dude's name, address, and phone number? Not sure how that adds anything to the story - and Caleb might not want his details associated with this train wreck of a thread.
Or it might have been one of my buddies in the Kansas City Region PCA that I told about it on Saturday after you said it was fair game. He's really excited about it - moving up from a Boxster. His credit union ran the book value on it at $32,000, BTW. Don't know which "book" they used, but the car was priced so low I think that it actually became a hindrance to getting it sold. The buyer isn't a Rennlister, but he consulted this thread and I expect that he'll join because he was really impressed with the rapport.
Bottom line, thanks for sharing the info mc4saints. Once you decided to pass on it, I figured it wouldn't last long. I understand your reluctance to buy this one because you just started looking. The hunt is half the fun, so take your time and enjoy learning about the 996 and its variants and studying the market. Asking about the car here was a good move, and it appears that everyone respected your unofficial "right of first refusal". As you saw, you got a lot of good info and opinions. Now, get back out there. You've got a little over 2 months worth of prime buying season left before the prices start to creep up for spring.
The Conspiracy Continues-
So this was unreported accident damage .No insurance involved. No Police report. Paid in cash for a quikie repair and traded in to a non-Pcar dealer to cover the traces. The owner and the Jag Dealer left a lot of money on the table for a reason.
Look for blood stains under the mismatched bumper?
Good for your buddy for stepping up! I gave it a lot of thought over the weekend and was ready to put a deposit down today but I guess I was not quite quick enough on the trigger... Do you know if he is getting a PPI done on the car? Or was the price good enough that he is jumping right in?
This is Awesome! Hopefull your Buddy got it! The salesman said it was someone local but I guess you can be in DFW and be in KC region PCA or salesman was wrong?
Did he do a PPI or was the price low enough to gamble for him? I ask because I am so curious of how it does on the PPI since I was relatively close to getting one. I would be mostly concerned about the front end. Someone did not put the front bumper on correctly.
Tell your buddy I was probably the last one to drive it before he purchased it since I actually went to drive it at Noon today. I figured since I had already considered it...I could at least drive a 996 for the 1st time in my life. It was fun...especially since I hadn't drove a 6 speed of any type in years.
Not sure I will jump before spring...So I hope you are wrong this time about price increases!
That being said, if something like the red cab that was purchased, on this forum today, for 15k... I would probably be in.
Please. Please have your buddy start a thread on it..really curious.
Thanks
He is going down to pick it up this week. If he is unsure after inspecting it in person, he will take it for a PPI. I think he's taking a cadaver sniffing dog down there with him to check for body parts wedged in the front bumper cover also.

I've been on the hunt for my first P-Car (996 Turbo w/Tiptronic) for about a month now. I was served a banner ad showing this 40th Anniversary example at Jaguar late Saturday night while browsing the 6speedonline vehicle marketplace. It wasn't even close to what I was searching for, but the price was so low that I figured I would jump on it. I did my homework on the 40th Anniversary yesterday. The dealership was closed yesterday, so I gave Caleb a call this morning and told him that I would take the car at asking price if he would let me do a PPI locally w/Hans@PAC Performance.
Long story short, Caleb called me back at 4pm stating it was sold this morning through another sales rep.
Congrats to your friend on picking this up and BOOOOO to the OP who blew up my chance to save $20K in not buying a 996 turbo.
Once he picks it up, be sure that he joins RL. Then, make sure that he posts something moronic for his first post, so that he can be abused here. It's a rite of passage.
How about showing us a pic of what a 40th AE looks like in the 40th AE owner's thread?
But seriously, post pics of the top of the engine just to make sure he did get the x51 engine and not a swap out.
If the OP was serious, he should have immediately made a conditional offer with deposit, contingent on the PPI. The dealer would have brought the car to Hans at RAC for him.
Hans is an honest guy with a good crew capable of doing a thorough PPI. You would have gotten the truth about the car. Mystery would have been solved. The car may have been a chance to get into a 40th AE at a low price. It seemed to have potential to be made a nice car if Hans found it to be mechanically sound.
If I could have seen the car in person, I could have told you in 30 seconds if it had been repainted, repaired.
Its not a good thing to be known by. I know several people in the Porsche business world that under no circumstances will return to RL. I talk to em from time to time...mention RL and get nothing but comments like," I got eaten alive last time I posted. I wont go back."
So I hope he joins and makes it thru the gauntlet.
Points,
Thanks for joining in.
I just do not understand why some very frequent posters here go out of their way to be nasty.
I find it a distraction when we are trying to thrash out some technical problem and then the sarcasm/boobies/inane comments .
Then the discussion collapses because the decent guys just unsubscribe.
I have spoken with one vendor who had the same reaction .So he does not comment any more. Sad that the badly behaved rule this wonderful Forum sometimes.
My short response, they need to chill and have a sense of humor.
I have the same issue with Facebook. There are people that constantly use it for their commercial gains like advertisement, self promotion, etc. etc. Yes, you are a photographer; nice to know. Yes you are a real estate agent; nice to know. But people go to these social spaces to .... that right "socialize" not listen to commercials. I say, a little fooling around makes the environment more fun. People just need to understand that this is not a conference room. It is a pub with beer and TVs playing sports. That is the mood here. That is the norm.
Perhaps that is the issue - some Members think Rennlist is just Facebook ?
They also think that gratuitously nasty comments are acceptable, even welcomed?
And they interrupt a technical discussion to demonstrate their social 'skills' .
But Internet Brands and it's customers (advertisers and Sponsors) pay the bills to keep Rennlist running, not the mere Posters like me.
I suspect that the Advertisers and the Ad Sales reps dislike rancorous threads. Anger is an unlikely motivator for selling car parts.
But I can tell I am out of step . So here goes with the FB comment:
Martin has made a flanking move on Jake !
He has moved to Port San Lucie in Florida.See Craigs List for details.I'm serious !
https://treasure.craigslist.org/ptd/5260083494.html
How about the phone thread? Poor Rubik got so abused and confused he gave up and sold his car!
Seriously though, that he complains about bad etiquette/attitudes and disrupting threads while going on to plug Martin says all that needs to be said I think...
Response 1:
God damnit gnat; I almost choked on my water.
Response 2: No you are mistaken sir. I have repeatedly explained my reasoning for selling the car. It was because the internal total volume was less than x. I needed y internal volume.
Now tell me which one is more fun to read?
Yes, actually they sold it twice. Long story. Same ol' car dealer ****. Not worth wasting your time with the details.
But if you wanna have a little fun, go down there and act like you are there to pick it up. Tell them that one of their salesmen sold it to you last Monday morning and you have receipt for the cash deposit you gave him. Watch them squirm and try to weasel their way out of it.
Are the smart enough to tell one 40th Anniversary Edition from another? I could pull up in mine saying "this guy" sold it to me and said to get the luggage at the dealership....or something like that. :-)
Well, that's not my call whether to share the deets - I wasn't the buyer who got shafted. But, like the true gentleman that he is, he has decided to take the high road and let it go/move on. I will share a couple of observations. First, most businesses do just fine when everything is going smoothly. When a problem arises, you see their true colors in how they resolve the issue. I am generally sympathetic to car dealers - believe it or not, it's a tough business and most of them try to do the right thing most of the time. Consumers can simply be unreasonable/unrealistic. That being said, I was very disappointed in Park Place/Jaguar Plano in this situation. The problem was 100% due to their fault. Their response was shameful. Second, if you think a high end dealership such as a Jaguar franchise is better than other car dealers, think again. I've dealt with small-time, "buy here-pay here" dealers with much higher business ethics than what I just witnessed. Many times.
