The only exception to that is if my car is already at the dealer for some maintenance I wouldn't do and it's due for an oil change anyway.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How many do your own? I was curious if a lot of people value the receipt for their maintenance records more than that what they save by doing it themselves?

POST 2Original post

I do my own. I keep a maintenance log and add it in there. Not too worried about a receipt for a routine maintenance item like an oil change.

POST 3Original post

I've got the receipts for the oil, the filter(s) etc... ? So the answer to your question - "I was curious if a lot of people value the receipt for their maintenance records more than that what they save by doing it themselves?" would be...No

POST 4Original post

The other advantage is poking around and inspecting for other issues. Unlikely the quick-lube places will do that.

POST 5Original post

Your receipt for purchasing the oil and filter is your maintenance record. On a 15 year old car, people will understand.

POST 6Original post

I have been changing my oil and filter since purchasing my '99 Porsche in 2006. I log mileage, type of oil and filter, and date each time. It's an easy way to begin bonding with your 911.

POST 8Original post

You get to choose what brand and viscosity of oil you use if you DIY. Lube places don't give you that choice. I always write down and keep records of DIY work to my car. plus the mileage when the work was performed.

POST 9Original post

Keeping an accurate log of maintenance/repairs, both self performed and shop-performed is the best way to show to the next owner(s) that maintenance and repairs were performed regularly and with diligence. If the log contains both self-performed and shop performed work, I like that even better. Keeping the oil, filter, plugs, etc. receipts to pair up with the log is just as good as a shop receipt as far as I am concerned.

POST 10Original post

I DIY the oil changes, keep receipts as others have said, and for record keeping I additionally have the oil sent to a lab for checking and maintain yearly test lab reports. I also carefully inspect the innards of the oil filter. That's way more than a dealership would do...

POST 11Original post

Yep. I do the oil changes on all my cars/bike. Save receipts and a nice folder too. I even write the mileage and the date of oil change on the receipt. When I sold my Boxster and wife's Mini Cooper, the came very handy. It showed the buyer they were buying a well maintained car.

POST 12Original post

I do the same , I write the milage and date in the log book and the receipts for filters and oil in the file . If I was selling the car I could list my pEng and red seal numbers to prove I was qualified .

POST 13Original post

My receipt list from places such as Pelican Parts, Suncoast, Sharkwerks and others speaks very clearly of someone who bought and did whatever was needed. Everything, even the tool to remove the oil filter, all speak to someone who cared about their car. When you see the totality of what one has spent on maintenance, parts and the places they sourced everything from, the last thing on anyone'e mind would be, "I wonder if they did regular oil changes?" For warranties: Your oil and filter receipts are all you need. .

POST 14Original post

When you have a stack of receipts that correspond to your make and model, dates of ownership, and pictures of you doing the work, people tend to accept you did the oil change. When you tell them the dealer charges $250, all doubt vanishes.

POST 15Original post

No One other than me is going to drain the maximum old oil from the sump. That's why I change my own oil in all my vehicles.

POST 16Original post

I don't keep receipts for my DIY oil changes. They can see all the receipts for professional maintenance at my shop and if they don't trust me that I don't change the oil on odometer readings ending in "0" and "5" they can see the spot on my driveway where I spill the oil in the process. It occurs frequently enough it obviously coincides with regular oil changes.

POST 17Original post

I keep receipts for everything except gas purchases. The previous owners of my car kept all maintenance records in a thick 4-inch binder so I continue to do the same. Changing oil is one of the easiest things to do on this car so why not? The oil is expensive so it's not a significant savings but at least I know what went into it and that everything was done to my liking. The only exception to that is if my car is already at the dealer for some maintenance I wouldn't do and it's due for an oil change anyway.

POST 18Original post

My guys charge $200 I think so it's over $100 savings. Again, may not be consequential but it's so easy and you get a little sense of satisfaction.

POST 20Original post

I take dated pictures of the new oem filter sitting beside the removed cover showing the used filter in filter housing, the oil draining into the waste oil tank, the dash showing current mileage on the odo, and the date and time shown on the pcm. I also keep the used oil filters stored in marked plastic containers. As another poster stated you can let it drain as long as you want when doing it yourself.

Quotes source post: 12724806

You want OCD? From a financial perspective I record EVERY financial transaction on my PC. So although I don't keep my gas receipts I can tell you how much I spent on gas (or several other financial categories) since 1997 Thankfully this all makes tax season so easy every year. Plus I can also see how much this Porsche addiction is costing me. Thankfully it is still much less than my buddies spend playing golf at country clubs.

POST 26Original post

I really hope this guy is just messing with us. If its any consolation, I usually have 15 or more gallons of used oil stored due to my frequent oil changes. Sometimes I have enough to actually swim in.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 12724806

LOL.. I thought I was the only who saved gas receipts. I have a spreadsheet for each of my vehicles and record all expenses, service dates, etc in it. I take pic of the odometer at each gas fill up. My wife thinks I am crazy. LOL.

POST 29Original post

I don't keep records of any of this such silliness. I recorded that I put shocks on the car. I keep track in my head when to change oil (close enough).
