Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There's a lot of engine talk here but nobody ever talks about changing the gear ratios. This can provide a huge acceleration and driving improvement. I re-geared my previous 964 ( five speed) and it transformed the car. I haven't analyzed the 996 but 6th gear seems to be very tall....Also 1st is usually designed so a not so competent driver can maneuver in a hilly area.... so you would raise 1st and lower 6th and pack the rest closer together.....I don't know what gearsets are available for the 996 box. The G 50 had many available gearsets

POST 2Original post

These are the only ones I've heard about, but they don't include 1st or 2nd. There may be others https://www.gboxweb.com/996albins.html

POST 3Original post

It is talked about occasionally until the cost gets thrown into the conversation then everyone slowly backs away.... I paid like $6K for a gearbox refresh and the parts accounted for like $3K of basically small stuff (working off painful memory), like stuff you're going to replace ON TOP of the aftermarket stuff, if you start throwing the many thousands of parts you're talking about into the mix... the thought of how much that will cost has me dry heaving.... The G96 box has neither the factory upgrade (Cup) or aftermarket support the G50 does. I think the most sensible path to a shorter ratio is to go to a 997 box which has been done by some crafty folk, I don't know the gear ratios but you can look them up easy enough. For the upgrades you're talking about though, Call CMS, they have both Albins R&P and gearsets listed, I have no idea if you can still actually get those parts, they are the people I'd talk to about it though, https://californiamotorsports.net/

Yes, it seems like it's not so easy when people look at it. I don't think the 997 ratios are that much different. Mostly just an effort to compensate for the bigger wheels.

Can confirm, just went through a gearbox refresh and it is a 10k problem. Would not recommend 0/10.

POST 6Original post

The great weakness (well, one of them) of the G96 transmission is its lack of alternate gear ratios. I don't believe they are still available from Albins or, for example, their US distributor Retro Sport. I thought the ring-and-pinion set was NLA, but Retro appears to still list it. Yes, expensive, I've done a few of the r&p swaps. It is a lot of time = labor and it is a nuisance to get the interference-fit gears safely on and off the pinon shaft. If you remain interested and undeterred, bless you, you might consider coupling the r&p swap with a full rebuild, because getting to the sealed front pinion shaft bearing (no lesson learned from the M96 IMS fiasco) requires pressing those darned gears off the pinion shaft.
