Suggestion

If you want a "purist" feel, and have the money to spend, replace your suspension with a better set-up, get a good set of tires, upgrade your brakes and pads, replace your entire exhaust system with a performance exhaust system, add a software package for more throttle response and to tie in the exhaust system, get a set of GT3 or equivalent seats, replace your engine and trans mounts, replace your shifter or the internals of the shifter with metal bits, and go to a PCA autocross and track instruction day to learn how to drive it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I recently purchased an 04 996 C4S. It has 73,000 kms, a manual, blue (not sure what specific color) and grey interior. It's in really good shape. My main goal is to make it as close to a sharkwerks 3.9 as possible. I understand I have an M96 so I'm limited. Are there anyways of building a Mezger out of a M96? If so what do I need to do? It's a totally different case (I think), so I probably can't. Any suggestions? Regards, Wail.

POST 2Original post

You can't turn an M96 into a Mezger engine without totally replacing the M96 with a Mezger. It's been done. Google "GT3-ish" in this forum, or take a look at the $1.3M 996 just purchased by Jerry Seinfeld. Sharkwerks 3.9 upgrade appears to start with a GT3 engine, which is a Mezger. They're claiming 500-ish crank HP. If you want those kinds of numbers from an M96 you will want to become very good friends with either Hartech or Jake Raby. And bring a substantial checkbook too. In my honest opinion, if your goal is a 996 or 997 with monster power, either give up on the flat 6 altogether and do an LS swap, or buy either a GT3 or a 996/7 with a broken motor as your starting point. The GT3 will cost more initially but will handle the extra power with fewer mods; the 996/7 roller will leave you with more money to spend on getting it to monster status. Or you could just buy a newer 911.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Awesome. This is great. Thanks. Hartech, noted, Ill reach out. Ill probably just keep an eye out for a 996 GT3 engine for saleif I can ever find one. what do you think a 996 GT3 engine is worth? $$$? I dont want reliability issues and I want to be able to bag the thing.

POST 5Original post

Most likely $45-50k for a good 3.6l mezger with trans. U will need both with about 2-300 other parts to complete the swap. In the 6 or so years i have owned my car i have seen only seen 2 wrecked 6-gt3 hit the market and i bought 1 of them for $50k. There r more of these cars and parts available in europe. They only imported approx 1050 gt3s to north america.

POST 6Original post

Not wishing to rain on your parade, but .... Save yourself a great deal of time, effort and money (and probably heartache). Sell the C4S and buy a 996 or 997 GT3. No, I know it’s not what you want to hear, but unless you have the time, expertise and skill (and facilities) to undertake the conversion yourself (though on the basis you’re asking whether you can convert an M96 into a Mezger, I’m guessing you don’t) leave such conversions to others better versed in what’s required and instead by an off-the shelf Mezger engined car that Porsche have done all the hard/development work on already, for you. Hartech won't build you a 500hp M96, it’s not what they do. They’ll build you very torquey, reliable 3.9, 4.0 or 4.1 M96 with 380-400hp, but for 500hp, you’d need the services of Jake Raby at Flat 6 Innovations. You’ll also need an open checkbook, patience and the car off the road for many months if you go that route (IF indeed you can get Jake to build you such a motor). As I said initially, I wouldn’t bother (unless you enjoy the pain/joy of managing a project such as this) rather, I’d buy yourself a 996 or 997 GT3 and enjoy that motor’s unique, and very different character in a package that was designed for it, be that from the perspective of the brakes, suspension, transmission etc. Good luck whichever route you choose

POST 7Original post

OP - Atgani is right. Or you can enjoy the C4S for what it is: best AWD drivers car of the era. Tinker with add-ons thatll improve hp/tq by 15 or so, tweak the suspension, have fun updating the interior to make the car your own. Nothing purist about turning an M96 into a wannabe Mezger.

POST 8Original post

Another option is sell the C4S and buy a 996 or 997 Turbo.

POST 9Original post

For the street, you really don't need any more horsepower. In its present form, it has more than most can safely use on the street. All of this is assuming you have replaced the following important parts to prevent them from failing or causing the potential for damage. Yes, and you should check to make sure you have smooth bores. 1. IMSB 2. Water Pump 3. AOS 4. Fuel Injectors All of the above mentioned items in the previous paragraphs will cost you over $20k. Imho its worth it. Save the engine rebuild or swap for later and learn to drive the car and its characteristics. Its pretty damn "pure" if you set it up properly.
