I changed the fronts to 245/35's when I changed them out with Michelins and have no rubbing issues.

I previously ran G-force rivals, and I did not care for them.

Suggestion
I think it's worth mentioning wheel specs when talking tires, because if you're running aftermarket/custom wheels one tire size may scrub depending on diameter, offset, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.
I have 2 sets on 2 different wheels.
First set: 225/40R18 & 285/35R18 on Carrera II wheels
Second set: 235/40R18 & 285/35R18 on OZ Allegerita wheels
I'm down in Houston, so I run them all year long, except for about 10 days out of the year when I keep my car parked because the temps are too low.
Discount Tire and Tire Rack both carry them.
You'll have to use the size configurator, not the vehicle one.
I have a local shop mount and balance the ones I've bought from Tire Rack.
Hey Tex,
Could you do me a favor and measure the overall width of your 285/35/18's? I'm running PS2's because I needed 315's for my 11" wide CCW's. I heard the 4S 285 runs wide, but I'm very skeptical they wont look stretched on an 11" wheel.
I'm running Pilot Spot 2S's. They're supposedly better than the 4S in dry conditions, but inferior in wet conditions. I would run the 4S if they offered more sizes for 18" wheels, but 285 is as wide as they go the last time I checked. (Edit: looks like they offer a 295/30 and 295/45 now)

I previously ran G-force rivals, and I did not care for them. I ran 245/40/18's rivals in the front and they rubbed a little at lock out. Adjusting the coil overs may have been able to fix that. I changed the fronts to 245/35's when I changed them out with Michelins and have no rubbing issues. I think next set of tires will 235/40/18's. I was able to special order my tires through America's tire. This was during covid and certain things were very difficult to get, and they were able to source them from various warehouses.
Front:

Rear:

Yeah, good point on wheel dimensions. I'm looking to replace the rubber on all 4 corners with stock 18 wheels. So if you've got commentary on what fits/works and doesn't on stock geometry, do tell!
couldnt get mps4s when I needed tires so i got michelin pilot sport cup 2 and i've been really happy with them. they exceeding my expectations in the wet and in longevity.
I've had MPS4S previously on my last WRX, but that was my daily driver. I liked them, but don't anticipate I'd need the wet performance or longevity on the 996. The last time I had an extreme performance tire I LOVED them, except they happened to be REALLY LOUD. Yokohama AVS ES100 (yeah, it was a while ago).
I'm not interested in driving the car on salty roads in the winter, and if there's rain in the forecast I'm going to leave it in the garage. That limits my yearly mileage to the point where I'd definitely struggle to get the full tread life out of a MPS4S or other 300+ treadwear tire in the tires' 6 year lifespan. So I guess I'm leaning towards the street and track 200s. Sure they don't last nearly as long, but it's probably the right balance of shelf life and mileage for my anticipated driving patterns. I'm also not planning any track time.
I feel like I'm talking myself into the extreme performance summer tires, but the review data on them is so limited it makes it tough to decide.
If you are leaning in that direction then go with sport cup 2s, which have evolved into very fast street tires versus the original sport cups which were street legal track tires.
I am hoping Michelin comes out with a version of the original Sport Cups that fit our wheels, because they are truly missing a street legal track tire.
I am going to try the Falken 660s this year instead of the SC2 in hope that they are stickier on the track.
To your point, we are definately limited with tire availability. Maybe we will see a few new tires announced before spring.
Tire Rack has both in 225x40x18 and 285x30x18.
They are probably overkill for you, but if you don't drive in the rain or put many miles on your car and want a serious performance tire, I like Toyo R888Rs. I have never had them on a 996, but have had them on a 951 and a Corvette.
I got a set on my rims right now. Started using them when Michelin got rid of the original sport cups and I needed something I could drive to the track on. Very sticky tire. Softer tirewall than I like, but all in all a solid 100 track tire. They do get greasy after about 4-5 laps and you gotta pay attention. On a two mile long track I found the R888Rs to be 2 second a lap slower than hoosiers and 2 seconds faster than sport cup 2s.
But they are loud as he'll. Drives my wife nuts.
Sumitomo HTR Z5s on my Targa and I have liked them a lot. I don't track the car at all, so just city and highway driving. They're also half the price of Pilot Sports, which is obviously a huge plus.
Idaho brings up a very good point. If you are not going to track the car, then you have a lot more options. In that case, I would just run the new Michelin all season sport 4s.
225x40x18 and 285x35x18
Continental just came out with the Extreme Contact Force, it's available in (fronts) 245/35-18 or 245/40-18, (rears) 275/35-18, 295/30-18 and 315/30-18. It's a new design and supposed to be quite good. I'll probably use a set once my Sumitomo HTR3's are done.
I was hot on some pilot sport 4s' this summer. But when I needed to order them they were backordered everywhere.
I compromised and went with Bridgestone Potenza Sport's (
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...=Potenza+Sport
)
After a road trip from Spokane to Denver, spirited driving there, and back, I'm very satisfied. They're not as sticky as a more track oriented tire, but they exceed my bravery.
Im running michellins 285/30/18 on the rears, car has konis and hr springs, its the 285/35 set up to tall or you guys think itll fit? I have factory 408s as my wheels.
I don’t understand the op needs clearly are you going DE full track or weekend warrior do you drive in any rain/snow on a regular basis does temperature drop below 40 degrees
im sorry but with so many variables to answer narrow the choice the 2 that I have used and still do for excellent all arounder is first continental DWS and second the Michelin AS4 both excellent but the Continental is a little better in worse driving conditions the Michelin in pure driving situations
but if you swap wheels sets like I do for my 911 the sumitomo htr are budget fabulous but only above 50 degrees
the Yokohama Apex v601 are going on my rims this spring’s first spirited sticky driving days
They will rub the top of the inner wheel arch and scrape paint away.
Worse is that the circumference is bigger than the front tyre's and this leads to loss of engine braking due to the TC (or PSM) adding a little throttle as it sees the rear wheels turn too slow compared to the fronts and tries to speed them up by adding a little throttle.

Like Idaho, I have the HTR Z5s on the car. I came fom Pilot Sports and these feel SLIGHTLY more planted. I also don't do any track, just highway and city driving. They're probably not as good on the track, but they feel just as compliant and grippy on the street....at half the price.
You may also want to look into the General G-Max RS. I am sure the Michelin's are a better tire, but the G-Max are also half the price and have fantastic reviews, check Tire Rack. I have run a couple of auto-cross's and they have been great so far. They also came in sizes for the 4S.
@3/98 911 coupe
,
I have 285/35R18s on both sets of my wheels.
Stop by sometime and put the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S that are on my Carrera II wheels on your car and then go drive it and see if it rubs.
Thanks, that be a future project. We couldnt install the headers today. Passenger side no problem, driver side was missing a bolt and its inside, another yes was able to take it out, 3 one broke in half. Tightened back up and its going to Justins on Monday.
Justin says he has the tools to do the job. Anyway Im leaving the car with him. Riding back with Alfredo. Hopefully the other 3 bolts dont do this.
That's not a bad tire at all, especially for the price. I've got about 15k miles on mine without any complaints. Running them in 235/295 size. Only real complaint is I'd like the rear tire shape to be slightly more squared of but that's an aesthetic complaint.
Yes, I have this on a narrow body 40AE car. Car is lowered on Ohlins to GT3ish height. Specs are:
Front: 18 x 8.5" ET50 with 10mm spacers. Tires: General GMax RS 235/40/18
Rear: 18 x 11" ET60 - no spacers. Tires: General GMax RS 295/30/18
Continental extreme contact force
295 30 18
245 35 18

8 50
Not ideal sizes for these rims but needed tires for the last few events of the season and this was what was available. Looking for 9 and 11 inch wheels for this season.
Thanks. I know it's vanity but for that reason I'm going to try MPSS4 in same sizes. The tire seems to have a slightly nicer shape that should address my concern.
Hey guys, does anyone have a recommendation for street/track 200-300 tw tire? I don't want to run Michelin, too expensive for a track use tire. I am only running the .5qt deep sump no extra baffle. Was thinking the Potenza RE-71RS or extreme contact sport or maybe the Sumitomo HTR? I am new to the 996 so this would be a entry level track tire to get better at driving. I am however semi familiar with being on the track have about 20 track days logged. Thanks!
Not counting the MSC2, for 200 tires it looks like it may be down to Falken 660s or RE-71RS on our standard 8x18 10x18 rims. Haven't tried either yet but am leaning toward the 660s after my toyo proxies are done. Seems that the 660 may have a firmer sidewall.
But unfortunately, there just arent that many track tests comparing the two as of yet. 660s were relatively inexpensive at $1,000 for a set of 4, but prices are now rising.
I've long been a fan of the Continental Extreme Contact DWS06. Great in the wet and even a bit of light snow, pretty sticky, and the best treadwear I've found. I found them in 285/35/18 for the rear of my 996 C4S. They also have them in 295/35/18 but I was afraid they'd rub. Im running stock 18-inch wheels with spacers.
The Contis are also much quieter than the Pirellis they replaced, and the Michelin P4S that I've had.
I'd be tempted to try the Continental DW, they are the stickier summer version. They are a little softer though, not sure if they might feel spongy on the track?
I've always had better wear with bridgestone over falken but maybe for a 200tw tire they will be more even?
Here is a pretty good deal.
Although the rears are 2018 production.
I can get the Conti Extreme force delivered for $1213. 295/30 245/35 on 18's I have about 16 days on them, maybe can get 3 or 4 more.
I had similar wear on the RE-71s, have no experience with the new version.
Im a rank amateur on the track so my $.02 is worth considerably less, but the Contis do feel a bit squishy or greasy on the track. I think theyre great everyday tires but not for regular track use.
I ended up buying those Yoko Advan Neova's on clearance for my 18" wheels and taking them to the track. Grip well, was hoping to find the limit on them but haven't yet. 295 fit on the back nicely.
Look into the Nankang CR-S. These are getting a lot of praise out of the 991 GT3 guys right now. They make them in both the GT3 235/40/18, 295/30/18 sizes, and the track focused 245/40/18, 315/30/18 setup. You can purchase them through Pils Tire Service online.
Tire Rack has all the Porsche OEM and "N" approved tires, and they now partner with Firestone Stores to ship and install them at a very reasonable cost. /X3
^^^This if you are looking to run oem sizes. Looks like we now have (4) 200 weight choices. Listed below in order of age on market (oldest to newest).
1. Mich Sport Cup 2
2. Falken 660
3. Bridg RE-71RS (new)
4. Yoko AD09 (brand new)
Don't remember a time when we had 4 choices for 200W track tires. If anyone has a compare and contrast of the 4 tires, please post.
I have run Michelin PS4S on my 996 Carrera and 997 turbo. By far the best tire I've run. In the winter I changed to the cheapest all season tires I could buy on eBay which were Vercelli Strada II for my 996 Carrera. They were surprisingly good for an all season tire and would buy them again.
Ive had Michelin Pilot sport cup 2 on my 997 Turbo and they were great but were loud compared to the PS4S. Overall the best tires were Michelin PS4S. I would highly recommend them. They are quite, grip amazingly well and last a long time.
Im getting a set of these soon. Do you recall how many miles you got out of them? Rear vs front, knowing that rear will wear out faster. Any track / hpde days on them?
My first set of Pilot Sport 4S(225/40-R18 & 285/35-R18)lasted me 2 years. (~20k miles)
My second set lasted about the same but the fronts still had usable tread left, the rears were shot.
These are on my “spare set” (Carrera II) of wheels(currently on the car) along with a new set of rears.
This included no track or Autox.
It was mostly daily driving on the freeway.
That can be anything from stop and go traffic to 90mph+all during the same commute.
My newest set(234/30-R18 & 295/30-R18) is on my OZ wheels.
Since I now work from home(subject to change 1-day per week) they’re mainly getting garage miles now.
I have two sets of wheels and boy do I wish I had room for 4 in the garage. If I did, I would continue to run a set of 200w track tires on one, summer street tires on another; and then on the 2 extra sets I would run a set of all weather that were best in cold weather and snow and a set of Hoosiers.
We have so many new choices for tires today that i am like a kid in a candy store. Looking forward to more tire comparison tests to understand the advancements and characteristics.
OP - If youre running OE 18x8 and 18x10, you can find plenty of 225/40 options, but the 265/35 size is pretty hard to find in the flavor you might prefer. What I did was go to 275/35 rear when I couldnt find any 265/35 of my beloved AS3+. Not so pinched, increases rake ever so slightly (3mm) and many options for stickier rubber. Not N-spec, but take the whole N-spec discussion as you will.
I've thought about getting an all-season tires for my Carrera IIs for the 10-20 days we're below summer tire temperatures.(40F)
But since I no longer have a daily commute, I just can't justify the expense.
I have PS4S on both sets of wheels.
I'd buy a more track-focused tire for my wider OZ wheels, but then I'd not have my favorite wheels on my 996 most of the time.
First world problems I know!
My third set of wheels were stored outdoors, so once I sold them I decided that 2 was it.
My Michelin wheel rack holds 1 set of wheels and a full-sized spare for 1 of my other vehicles.
Wish I had room for more wheels.
20k miles is right around the mileage I got from my current General RS Max tires. Fronts have plenty of life left but rears are close to gone. Sound like I can expect similar from PS4S set. I'm also mostly street but will be doing an occasional HPDE day which will probably place some additional wear, which is to be expected and fine with me. Seems like you're basically replacing the rears are two times the rate.
