I dunno, I think your insurance will be good ( it's not an official Race Track ) , but definitely check your air bags and seat belts for proper function, and even a helmet wouldn't look completely silly...lol

My Sunday drive must have finished off some rubber bits on my suspension, certainly the coffin arms are pooched, ball joints, they've not been replaced, ever, as far as I can tell.

Justin's car is probably the cleanest 996 I've ever seen!
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Guys,
It looks like I have a legit date to be home so it’s time to start getting a roll call going. I understand this could be a Regional thread but more people hang out here.
The plan is to be in the area from 2-4DEC. I’ll probably be up on the 1st to putt around but we can see who would like to partake in the event.
@GC996
mentioned some really nice adjacent rides that can be included. What say you all? I’m open to suggestions. An asterisk by your name just means you're still a "maybe". There are couple dudes I follow on IG that are semi-local(right now that number is 2).

Good and I'll probably see you the second week I get home, I got that lip to give you.
Man I really really want to do it.
Ha absolutely, I'm purposely not getting it clear coated until after the run so people can check it out.
I doubt I'll be able to tool on down with my 911, 300 miles is punishing with the track suspension and I can't imagine 3,000 miles. You never know, though.
Well the list will be updated as we go, the plan is to do more events with the same group over time.
Man thats rough but I understand.
Ok so that means youre going to get a lay of the land before meeting us in Nov I like your style.
I'm still a maybe sadly. My Sunday drive must have finished off some rubber bits on my suspension, certainly the coffin arms are pooched, ball joints, they've not been replaced, ever, as far as I can tell. I'm hoping my budget stretches to repairs before December. But hope is not a strategy, a wise man once told me.
Does anyone have 996.1 C2 suspension parts that were in good shape but were replaced with aftermarket due to coilovers and lowering going on? PM me😊.
Id like to keep tabs on this as i have done the Tail on my motorcycle, but would love to meet up and do it in the 911..
it is a significant jaunt 668 miles so i would put me down as a potential maybe please if this is open to new blokes that is...
Count me in. I have a 996 and live in ATL. Ill see if I can get any of the other ATL 996 guys.
my instagram handle is @renhenry1, good place to reach me if my DM doesnt work.
Here's a clip from the last time I was there, in the Z4MC. It was high season which means huge crowds, so I went up just after sunrise to have a clear road. Only I didn't.
You Tube
Done,
Depending on the trailer situation i can tow at least one more car to the nc mountains. The Pete is pretty comfortable traveling with 3 but it will cost u some fuel $.
My 996 is caged and I dont drive it on street. However, I live 30 minutes from dragon. Actually just got back from there 20 min ago. Would love to join you guys but have to drive my 991. If that ok I will come.
If any of you guys are planning on staying overnight near the Dragon, I would suggest you book a stay at the Topoco Lodge.
They are very welcoming to Porsche guys and even set up special dinners and party time outside by the lounge with campfires , running water streams, ect..
We booked 20 rooms for our local Porsche club that I helped in planning and now it is "yearly Staple" for our PCA Chaptor..
No internet service or phone service ( except for emergency) but lots of great atmosphere. The main Lodge is old school beautiful, and they have comphy Cabin Rooms also..
The downstairs lounge/bar with outside party area with campfire and babbling brook was a great place for Porsche guys to talk Porsche...
It is within a few miles of the "Dragon" and the many other great roads near-by like "Moonshiner 28" and Cherohola Skyway" ect..
I would suggest trying to fill up at least half the Topoco Lodge, they will be very accommodating if you do....
Where are the general start and stop points? Places to eat on the way? Looking to start planning things out in a couple days but would like to hear opinions from guys whove completed the event or quest as I like to call it.
With your screen name (almost dragon) u get to drive up front
.
The weather south of NYC should be fine for summer tires that time if the year if u can make it that far.
I don't know, the weather in the NC mountains in December is cutting it real close for summer tires if you ask me. I am planning to pick up a set of non-summers if I make it out. These are the monthly averages in Deals Gap:
I drove the dragon a couple years ago on my Pirelli Sotto Zeros. That was the end of those tires. It may have been cold out but the heat that got put into them with as many turns as there are destroyed the tread blocks. If you didnt drive all out I am sure they would be fine but not a good choice if you are fast and intend to drive fast
Justin is helping me figure this stuff out and David, who has done the Dragon answered some questions.
I'm more than likely going to stay in a VRBO or AirBnB(I have non car friends in ATL that I'm going to see before getting to The Dragon on the 1st.) and depending on how many people show up, we'll figure out a place that we can all assemble during non driving hours. The Dragon itself is only 11mi and if we start from the North down, we'll end up at the Cherohala Skyway. The other option would be the Cherohala - Dragon 120mi loop with plenty of places to stop. Attached is the loop which is denoted by the Yellow highlighted route.
I'm open to suggestions so please add info, Looking to have as many smiles per mile as we can get. Right now I don't want to advertise this on the Dragon's site because it's really for Rennlist and friends of Rennlisters for now, don't want a giant group. The week before I'll probably send an email out to photographers via KillBoy and let them know our route for us who want photos. Also, for those who like swag... I'm going to have some small stickers made: RennDragonRun2022.
Anyone heading up there from the South take the Ocoee River Rd into Telico Plains, it winds around along the Ocoee River and is great fun and beautiful..
Also Telico Plains is a good place for food/gas...pitstop
I checked Tapoco Lodge’s site and they are all booked up for the dates of this gathering.
When I g to the Dragon, I usually take Ocoee river Rd to Ducktown and then Hwy 68 up to Tellico Plains. The beginning of Tn 165 (Cherohalla Skyway) is a great place for a pit stop before driving the Cherohalla Skyway. My wife and I used to do this every month when we had motorcycles and have done it numerous time in our Porsches.
I'll start looking at places as soon as step foot in the US. Even though everything looks good for me to be home on time... I know better. 13yrs of defense contracting has taught me that timelines change quickly and often.
Here are some thoughts.
1. We need to do the dragon as early as we can on Friday due to massive weekend traffic on the weekends. It's much safer to do on weekdays.
2. PLEASE make sure you car is ready. A good check of brakes, suspension bolts, all maintenance, tires, etc... is a safe place to start. Things will happen but being proactive on a 20 year old car is best.
3. Think about how you want to drive on this trip.. What I mean is some will be very aggressive and some just want to enjoy the drive.. We should divide into smaller groups to make it a better experience for all.
4. Communication is sketch at best in the this area. Handheld radios would be best to have for communication as cell coverage is limited. Plus being able to quickly communicate with your group is valuable.
5. Small repair kit for your specific car is also valuable.. I will have one but it will be specific to my car and it's need.
More to come but this will get you thinking and planning
We (another group and I) usually start on friday around 11 or 12 here and head south.

US 129
4371 Calderwood Highway
Maryville, TN 37801
Traffic was always minimal. We had plenty of road to run the cars hard and when we did run up on someone they usually pulled over and let us pass.
Just a heads up, that map in post 70 is pretty weird and horribly not to scale and kind of inaccurate. Do you have a google map of the route you plan for the group yet?
This is going to sound ridiculous and it'll make sense when we meet up but I can't access Google maps because I'm on a ship at the moment. We'll properly map it out as soon as I'm off the ship.
Here is a video of a few bikes blasting through the Dragon, typical day there includes several bike crashes and a couple cars off in the ditch/bank.. Very dangerous if you cross the yellow line, and even dangerous if you don't...lol But if you have never been on the Dragon this is what you will see... Other roads around are just as fun with less traffic but takes a few days to run them all... We usually allow 3 days per trip..... https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=1145010349613087
Attached are the written directions for the 123mi loop which according to that link, takes about 4hrs. Once able, I'll map it out via Apple Maps and compare it to Google maps... I'm a weirdo like that.
@Justin76
brings up some excellent points about prep. I believe I have a couple radios that I could spare in the event some of you don't want to get them (completely understandable).
https://tailofthedragontours.com/dragon-cherohala-loop/
I only ran the dragon, and I ran it literally all day, for two days. around the 5.5 mile marker there is a pull off with a bench and a fire ring that we sat at for hours just watching traffic.
I arrived early friday morning and basically had free runs all day. slower traffic was mainly great at pulling off.
Going towards NC, its good to hit the brakes at the state line and let the car cool off and keep and eye out for 5-0 (which was not there outside of a downed tree)
Going back up towards the lookout, there is another "1 mile to overlook" sign that is a good point to let off and let the car cool down so you don't hit anyone crossing the road or pull in with your brakes on the verge of fire (which was common)
there must be 20 photographers along the route, which is a little distracting at first, but you get to ignore them.
I would eat at Tapoco at least once, great spot next to the water
129 hub was good too.
The group I went with goes every year, and I'm going back again next year for sure, it is a beautiful area with a lot to see outside of just ripping the dragon (which is fun enough to do by itself)
A couple of dams to check out, the skyway, parkway etc.
Yeesh. Do I need to call Geico and get a special rider for the dragon? It's hard not to watch that video and imaging that asshat or similar riding right up the front of my car. Its bring used as if it's a track instead of a public road.
I had a friend who totaled his car on the Dragon . He was coming around a blind curve and met a car over the yellow line who had slide over a lane !!
I dunno, I think your insurance will be good ( it's not an official Race Track ) , but definitely check your air bags and seat belts for proper function, and even a helmet wouldn't look completely silly...lol
you should absolutely make sure your insurance is up to date and would cover replacement. between bikers hanging their heads over the mustard and jeep clubs using both white lines as their limits it is absolutely terrifying at times.
plus if you go off, its going to be down the side of a mountain into a tree.
This is just one reason why I am not a big fan of going there during high traffic times. There are a lot of yahoos, and it only takes one. I've also seen people pulling travel trailers through there, which is its own form of madness.
The run I posted a video of earlier was taken before I had breakfast. None of the photo outfits were there yet. None of the stores were open yet.
I've got a route from a recent run up to that area from this September. It completely avoids tail of the dragon and has us shoot up cherahola skyway.
Here is the link.

There's some pretty decent mountain biking trails in that region as well, I had a great time staying there a few years back and riding. Or was a nice change from Florida riding, where, yes it's flat, and yes, everything in the woods wants to sting you or worse. But a ride in the woods is a ride in the woods. Usually.
Many thanks! What do you
@TheChunkNorris
et al, this looks like a mighty fine days drive
Has anyone a preference as to accommodations? I rented a cabin there once, it was very nice, all the cabins surrounded a fire pit and grilling area, and behind the cabins, it's all wooded.
https://www.watershedresort.com/vaca.../rental/loft1/
.
I do recall that the short access road was steep and I was glad to be in my 06 Cayenne S. Maybe it's improved now. The developer does have plenty of options, but unless we're planning on cooking, maybe this type of place is overkill.
Just thinking out loud. Unrelated, Next Sunday is the Chin Track Day at VIR that I've been invited to, will be there Sunday and given a ride in a very quick (red grid?) 992 cup car. My heart is literally pounding already. I've never been in a race car, let alone a freaking Cup Car. Woohoo! One week till green flag (never said that before)
Thanks brother, if I have to look at one more map or Topo chart I'll lose my damn mind. Need about 2 days of doing nothing and driving around to revive my soul.
@work_truck
are you sure it's not actually 'meridian metallic', code 6A6? If so, that's a bingo...we have sister cars, mines a 2001 coupe 6mt 🏁👍
https://www.rennbow.org/porsche-colors/MeridianMetallic
Bonus with this color, to'say it in German' meridian metallic.
'sag es auf deutsch' meridian metallic.
Just pronounce it like you are Hans Landa
My car
I'm told the meridian metallic is a tinted neutral with red undertones. It is kind of reddish or something at times in the sun. I might try a flat pale red color Carrera decal in place of the black at some point. And Carrera red wheels? In tribute to the 1973 RS.
Has anyone made hotel reservations for the “Dragon run” yet, just wondering where majority of the 996 group are staying and if there is a consensus as to time and place for meet and greet.
Unfortunately, I think I've got to back out. I was really hoping to be able to make it, but life is crazy right now and on top of that I just found out yesterday I've got to go out of town for work that week. Hope y'all have a blast and maybe I can link up with you all next year for Pike's Peak.
I'm still a maybe. On one hand I would be thrilled to meet the group in person, and on the other hand, meh. 😂 Just kidding.
Mostly it's money, my car is still clunking, new coffin arms are still sitting in the box while I try to save money for the front end suspension refresh. Too many expenses recently.
Arron, let me know if you will make it, pretty sure I will be there. Now that I am Beaufort, SC not too far away. Would like to get a more detailed schedule for meet up with the 996 group.
Hello all,
I am Mark Davies, 168Sierra, (formerly 158Sierra until my email address changed). I will be arriving near the Dragon on Friday morning. Is there any information concerning meet up location for the group? There is a very good drive from Tellico Plains (south end of Cherohalla Skyway, TN 165), go south on Hwy 68 to Ducktown then west on Hwy 64 to Ocoee Lake, then north on 315 back to Tellico Plains. This is a 1-1/2 - 2 hr drive on very lightly travelled roads. If you want a longer drive stay on TN 68 south from Ducktown to Copperhill and then GA Hwy 60 (TN 68 changes to GA 60 at the state line) south to Suches/Dalonega and then east on Hwy 19 to US 129 near Cleveland GA (home of Flat Six Innovations). North on 129 across Blood
Mountain to Hwy 180 and accross Wolf Pen Gap back to Suches. I live just outside Chattanooga Tn and have driven and ridden these roads for years.
My wife may come with me and let me drive her 2003 996 C2 with a 4.0 Flat Six Track Performer engine.
De Jeeper, I would like to compare it to your GT3 engined 996 if you would like that.
Thanks to the. Chunk Norris for organizing this tour.
Mark
Pm chunk..... he is organising most of the details. I think some of us r staying at an airb&b but i dont have any details.
my plan is to start heading south around 6am fri morn with zbomb and get in before 6pm. Not sure where im going but im sure it figure it out. Just got the conti's mounted on the gt3 rims and ready from my roadkill road trip.
u r welcome to drive the gt3ish for a comparison. Im sure u will find it just as glorious but different.
Im looking to run Damages route on Saturday. Currently building a bunk bed so Ill really look at the map. In the meantime, Im open to suggestions to where we could start. More to come.
Hey guys heres the deal for the Run:
2DEC - Meet at 129 Hub to discuss times, planned stops and how were looking to maybe separate groups. Hang out and do Porsche guy stuff.
3DEC - Start around 7am(? Time can be adjusted to the left).
4DEC - Go from which ye came.
Ill have 3 radios with me and some tools in my car. Im willing to split seat time with people who arent bringing their cars. Pretty excited to meet you all and drive! Message me for my number and email info.
I believe theyre a generic Motorola 3 pack I got from Amazon a while back so the channels should be the same. No idea how good the range will be, should be adequate.
My wife uses these in her minicooper group street drives so they should ve fine. Ill bring my 2 radios so if we need more someone has to buy a set of cheap radios.
Found the radios and the channels are the same.
The radios themselves look like they were made for children but theyll do the job. Originally bought them to have 2 way coms while installing some lights in my ceiling Via a very hot attic in our FL summers.
Also think Ill be leaving Miami Friday morning at midnight, the Google Maps says Ill be there around 2pm.
Will be arriving at the Dragon Thursday afternoon. Will be staying Thurs night at Tapoco Lodge. let me know if anyone is arriving Thurs afternoon. we can get in a good drive Friday morning prior to meeting at 129 Hub at 3 Fri afternoon.
My wife’s is coming with me (she is letting me drive her car).
See you all soon
Mark Davies
I know I bailed on you guys, but I actually will be up there a little after 1PM tomorrow for a couple passes up and down. If you see a Red Mclaren 570 that is me. I will look for you guys if you are out while I am up that way.
No worries at all! Well be meeting at 129 at 3 and probably be hanging out afterwards. Ill PM you number.
Thanks brother. Well catch up after the trip!
Hell Yes!!
Finally finished the Dragon and the local roads. First like to thank
@158Sierra
for leading the group of us. Extremely thankful because aside from the rain. I couldnt have dreamed of a better event.
Just wanted to say thx to the guys that put this together. All i had to do was show up and drive and man did we drive. I burned up about 23 gal of fuel in about 8hrs on the road.
@TheChunkNorris
picked an excelant airb&b and
@158Sierra
(and wife) did a kick butt job of leading the pack. The group was rounded out by
@Justin76
. You guys that didnt make it missed a fun ride on some great roads even though it lightly rained most if the day. At least there was no traffic and not of us had any drama with our cars. I even surprised
@zbomb
and let him drive the last leg of the trip, the tail, to be honest it sucks sitting passenger in your own car
. We rounded out the evening with some good food, beer and conversation.
So much fun.
The route
@168Sierra
mapped out was awesome and the machines and drivers all performed so well.
Driving GT3ish on the tail was a really nice surprise - the cars as good as you think it is, better actually. I just tried to give it some justice on the driver front. Aaron wheeled it like a boss all weekend, as
@TheChunkNorris
@Justin76
and
@168Sierra
did. The weather was a challenge with rain, damp roads and fog, if that was a damper, it was a very mild one.
As good as the driving was, hanging out with the dudes was the best part.
Glad everyone enjoyed the driving tour. It was a nice trip with some very nice cars.
We had a great time and look forward to doing it again. It was great to meet DeJeeper, Zbomb, Justine76 and TheChunkNorris.
Even though the weather was less than ideal, it did reduce the amount of traffic on the roads so we could drive at a good pace.
168Sierra and wife’s C2 at Tapoco gas station
THANK YOU ALL for sharing pictures and words. I really wanted to come to this but circumstances conspired against it. I'm really happy to hear it was a success.
Alright... I will chime in with my two cents for the weekend and sum it up with one word.. EPIC.. you know it's always a risk staying two nights in a house with 3 guys you've never met before, but it turned out they are cool dudes. It was great making new friends with
@TheChunkNorris
@De Jeeper
@zbomb
and
@168Sierra
even thought he called me Justine in your post above
. Thank you fellas for putting up with my chatty ****...
The roads were great, the conversations at night were better, and the only bad was the drive home alone as you can see below..
Looking back, the loop that
@158Sierra
picked was perfect even with the weather being less than ideal especially when he hit the fog... Thank God
@De Jeeper
has a functioning rear fog light. Felt like I was playing a video game and following a red light to find my next quest. Regarding the group of guys, I was probably the odd man out as I've never pushed my 996 in any capacity so I was a little hesitant due to the weather. Justin rode with me through the Dragon on Friday when we initially met up with Sierra and his wife for dinner, he did some light coaching and gave me tips to instill some confidence so I appreciate that.
Justin's car is probably the cleanest 996 I've ever seen! Sounds amazing. GT3-ish is a freaking monster, so we sorted out and man a real Mezger is something to admire and experience because it's not easily explained. Sierra's car sounds like a damn angry gremlin, something about that 4.0 growl and howl at speeds. All the cars present made appropriate Porsche noises and it's really cool to hear 4 different engine/exhaust set ups while driving at speed.
I did but not on the actual Dragon. It was a sweeping right turn and I dragged my right foot on my carpet which caused me to hit the back of my left foot... I was already on the brakes but missed the line and oversteered. No damage and I didn't hit anything... I'm thankful.
Agreed
@TheChunkNorris
.. you did great by the way! Thanks for the SWEET comments.. I did capture a special moment of
@zbomb
and I after the day was complete ... we were talking about the day and how great the cars did, and how nice an LS would be on the cherohala skyway, we even invited each to our local cars and coffee events... It was a special moment that i captured in the short video below. Thanks
@De Jeeper
for capturing this on your phone sir

Im hoping to do a Pikes Peak run in 2023/2024 depending on my work schedule. What are some good areas on your side? Id love to make my way over there but Ill probably tow my 996.
Oh - you noticed that.
I'm home.
@De Jeeper
put in a ton of miles and never put a foot wrong. It's kind of amazing to me that the car he put together can reliably run at the track as often as it does and then flip a switch into street car mode and put like 2K miles on in the course of 4 days. What a statement to the quality of his work and maintenance on the car.
Thanks buddy ! It was a pleasure to ride along with you.
I covered most of my feedback in my earlier post but just to ram it home
It was a great trip and if you are not a *****, like to have fun with the boys and to beat on your car like it owes you money - you missed out.
North Carolina Chilly Sunrise
Getting there...
Pretty much without fail the worst part of a trip down, or back.
The only "legendary drives" on WC I'm aware of are all in California but I've never done any of them myself - only read / heard about them. I'm sure we could create an interesting journey westward from Las Vegas... Perhaps something on old Rt.66. Love the idea though. I'd help promote if we can build up steam.
Looks like it was a blast! Glad y'all had a good time! I definitely hope the next run works better for me and I don't have to back out. Pikes is one I have always really wanted to do.
For the most part same. I have done little bits of 101 (It runs through CA all the way up to WA and it is definitely nice. There are also some really great roads up in WA, but from my experience they aren't drive across the country great, but more of a you're lucky to live here as a car enthusiast great, and I don't know of any like the dragon or PCH (other than 101) where you could get potentially hundreds of great miles in a row. It wouldn't be very 996 friendly, but the West may very well be the absolute best part of the country for overlanding though. If I remember correctly at
@TheChunkNorris
wants to build his Touareg for that.
Im hoping to do the Mojave Trail at some point before 2025. I dont know where exactly but arent there some canyon areas that people run in Arizona or Utah? Back in my Z days I know a group of guys would make it a full day event.
Beartooth pass in Wyoming is probably my favorite road in the US. Wish I'd been driving the Porsche instead of the 4Runner at the time.
