I like to check the oil after the car is fully warmed up and usually park it closer to the road where I know my driveway is completely level, but it would be nice to just do it in the garage (which I do at times, but never did a direct comparison).

Ha, I guess I am overly sensitive to this topic as I've had bore scoring and literally checked the oil after every drive because it was sucking up the oil so bad.

Suggestion · Original poster

So checking oil on my 996 has been a religious thing at this point

Measuring hot runs the risk of running over-filled due to the time it takes the oil to drain back to the sump.

New rebuild is using a bit of oil too, but that's to be expected until fully run-in.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Seems like a silly question at first, but since code requires garage floors to be sloped 1%+ for drainage, how much will this affect the oil level reading? I back my car in, so the rear is on the higher end. I like to check the oil after the car is fully warmed up and usually park it closer to the road where I know my driveway is completely level, but it would be nice to just do it in the garage (which I do at times, but never did a direct comparison).

POST 2Original post

It's best to check the oil level in the morning after the car has set overnight . There is a lot of oil in the heads and it takes a while to drain into the sump . I would not worry about the 1 % slope .

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 18510714

Agreed with this. 1% slope is ~0.6 degrees. You are over thinking this. Measure in the same location after sitting overnight (or extended period). I keep my oil level in the middle of the range on the stick, which on my car, shows middle of the range on the dash. Measuring hot runs the risk of running over-filled due to the time it takes the oil to drain back to the sump.

POST 5Original post

Cool. I get it. Super sensitivity occurs when you get a rebuild. It's hard not to check all the time with the dash gauge staring at you. I had it with my rebuild. Consumption should become quite predictable. Check in the morning, and unless you see a pile of oil on the ground, don't think about it until the next morning.

POST 6Original post

Get the LN +2 qt deep sump and then you don't have to worry so much about oil level.
