Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Well CA is checking for tunes these days as part of SMOG.
Leading evidence: 'Check tunes these days as part of smog' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check tunes these days as part of smog' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The only time I have ever seen a DME fail is when the vario-cam solenoid shorts and burns a transistor in the DME, but there is a DIY in the archives that show how to replace the transistor in the DME for about $10.....

Before going through all these shenanigans, might be worth it to have your smog station do a pre-test.

The algorithm is the same for all cars which use the Megamos Crypto chip.

Hoping to have coding on one DME maintained as-is and then use PIWIS to program the "backup" as stock.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone with experience programming a spare/backup DME? I believe you would just need the IPAS codes for the car as there is a PIWIS DME programming sequence.
Hoping to have coding on one DME maintained as-is and then use PIWIS to program the "backup" as stock. Then allow for swapping between the two.
Sure you can......but......that is an expensive "spare part" for something that is very robust and hardly ever fails on its own...
The only time I have ever seen a DME fail is when the vario-cam solenoid shorts and burns a transistor in the DME, but there is a DIY in the archives that show how to replace the transistor in the DME for about $10.....
Well CA is checking for tunes these days as part of SMOG. I have an EPL which has closed their doors after 18 years. Not sure how to flash to stock but then also recover the EPL tune.
Oh I see, You want to have a "stock SMOG legal one" and a" tuned one" to swap out... makes since, and yes you can do it with PIWIS and IPAS codes...
NOTE : make sure you have a good 40 amp battery charger with "smooth no noise voltage" to maintain voltage, you don't want to loose battery voltage or induce electrical noise while programming, it can "brick" the DME...
I am curious if the immbolizer would "approve" of two different DME or does it "marry" itself to one. I was hoping someone had experience with using a backup DME and its just a cut power + swap between the two.
Yes, the immobilized is programmed to "marry" to any DME that has been programmed or cloned with the proper programming code.. each car has a specific "programming code" that will be programmed into the DME..and has a specific function in security...
To fully understand the security function, read up on Megamos Encrypto Security Function...it is a quite elaborate back and forth communication with double checks.."In detail the way this works is as follows: both the car computer and the transponder know a secret number. The number is unique to that car. It is called the "secret key". Both the car computer and the transponder also know a secret algorithm. That is a complex mathematical formula. Given two numbers it will produce a third number. The algorithm is the same for all cars which use the Megamos Crypto chip. Carrying out that calculation is what the Megamos Crypto chip does.
"When the process starts the car generates a random number. It is sent to the transponder. Now both computers perform the complex mathematical operation using two numbers they both should know, the random number and the secret key. They each produce a third number. The number is split into two parts called F and G. Both computers now know F and G. The car sends its F to the transponder. The transponder can check that the car has correctly calculated F. That proves to the transponder that the car knows both the secret key and the Megamos Crypto algorithm. The transponder can now be satisfied that the car is genuinely the car it is supposed to be. If the transponder is happy, the transponder sends G to the car. The car checks that G is correct. If it is correct then the car is happy that the transponder also knows the secret key and the Megamos Crypto algorithm. Thus the car can be satisfied that the transponder is genuine. So both devices have confirmed the identity of the other without actually revealing the secret key or the secret algorithm. The car can safely start. The verification of identity in this process depends on the shared secret knowledge. For the process to be secure, both pieces of information need to remain secret - the key and the algorithm."
I know, It is almost TMI for me too !! I can only do so much of this "geek work" untill I get a headache...I'd rather deal with "real metal materials"..lol
I can read and write DME calibrations with Galletto 1260 , and edit the calibrations with Tuner PRo or WinOlds , but I only have a partial .XDF file and since it is Illegal to alter calibrations anyway, I don't care to spend the time to make a full .XDF file....
Indeed very cool !!!
Are you absolutely sure you wont pass? My car passed at a California STAR station this year with an EVOM tune (and a UAOS).
Before going through all these shenanigans, might be worth it to have your smog station do a pre-test.
