Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced the RMS to be safe, even though it looked to be recent.
Leading evidence: 'Replace rms' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect ims' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am about to drop the engine after removing transmission to inspect the IMS.

In it he states that we don't need to remove the heads just to replace the guides, and Ahsai backed him up on that.

My plan is to only change the two pair of chain guides.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, I have a 996.2 motor, so it's a 3-chain affair. Symptoms are: dark plastic chunks in the pan and rattling when last started. No Durametric. New car to me. I am about to drop the engine after removing transmission to inspect the IMS. It is a LN roller bearing, looks fairly recent, quiet rotation by hand and no oil leak. I replaced the RMS to be safe, even though it looked to be recent. And, I have new OEM tensioners (all 3) and the four new OEM chain guides (#30 and 33 in the PET illustration on other posts), which by the way are different colors now (brown/white/black). I have searched for hours on these and other forums for a DIY, but all I have found are guide replacement instructions for the 5-chain motors. Can you guys tell me if I have to open the case to get at the two sets of long chain guides? I was hoping to only have to remove the valve covers. I assume I have to pull the cams to get down to them, as they are not visible in several photos I've seen. Any help is appreciated.
Agreed there is lots of info on the 5 chains. Mainly because the 5 chain is a lot more complicated. From what I can gather from conversations here, the 3 chain motors are not that bad to do.
Yes, you do have to split the case to get to them. The rounded chain guide is right next to the crank and turns the IMS. No way to get to that unless it's opened up. From there i guess it's not too bad.
Best,
Correct, amargari, I'm going to leave the IMS guide as it is this time around. My plan is to only change the two pair of chain guides. I found the post from OutNSpace where he has a very thorough DIY on a tear down of the 3-chain motor. In it he states that we don't need to remove the heads just to replace the guides, and Ahsai backed him up on that. It looks like they are accessible by removing the oil pump on 4-6 side, but I'm not certain about how to get at the guide on the 1-3 side.
Most likely u have to remove the trans and flywheel to get to the 1-3 pad bolts. Thats how it was with the 3.4l.
post a link for that other thread for the 3.6 guys here.
Here's the link to that detailed 3.6 engine rebuild.

I have the transmission and flywheel removed. Next, I will drop the engine. This is my fourth time to drop a 3.6 engine. I take it slow and careful, and so far I have not run into any problems. I don't have the tools or bandwidth to crack open the case, though. That's why I hope to be able to replace the chain guides by only removing the valve covers, or at worst the heads.
