I have not had the IMSB updated there, as mine was already replaced prior to my purchase.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

There is a list of certified installers here:
https://theimssolution.com/certified-installers/
Certified installers were hand-picked and trained by Jake Raby.
So if they're on the list, they should be your first choice.
They would be my
only
choice, other than doing it myself.
If you end up doing this with Marque Motors, I'd be curious to hear your feedback about working with them. Although my car has an LN ceramic double row IMS bearing, I've considered getting the full IMS solution at some point.
I believe the recommended service interval is 6 years or 70,000 mi. For the dual row ceramic bearing? Its easy enough to give LN a shout to find out for sure though. When it comes to the health of your engine, guesswork shouldnt be part of the routine
I am calling them on Monday. I am still deciding whether to do the job myself. It doesnt look very complicated to do, just time consuming to drop the transmission. I have a 2 post lift in my shop, so that helps. My car has only 30K miles on it, so was waiting to do a clutch job, but that may not happen for a long time. So, with the L&N sale happening, the savings will almost cover the costs of a new clutch kit. Plus I will install a new RMS. The last RMS was installed in 2006.
Do you have any idea what the labor costs are for doing the above? I am figuring it shouldnt be more than $2K.
Also, I will provide my own parts. I know some shops are opposed to that.
^^^ Obviously the cost will depend on the labor rate of the shop.
My IMS Solution install by a certified installer was 21 hours of labor.
That 21 hours included:
Pre-certification
IMS Solution installation
Rear Main Seal
Clutch
Flywheel
Plugs
Coilpacks
Timing Chain Tensioners
Brake + Clutch Fluid Flush
Oil + Filter change after installation
It will be interesting to see if they allow you to bring your own parts.
Most shops dont.
You can trim a good amount of those hours but the cost will depend a bit on your locations. Some are slight less than others. My mechanic was cool enough to not charge me for labor on certain things as they need to be done to do the IMS job anyway. You need to drain the oil and remove clutch and flywheel anyway to get to the IMSB so I was not charged extra labor for an oil change and a clutch job. All that was part of the labor for the IMS job. I imagine in this case, things like plugs/coils, timing chain tensioners and brake/clutch flush added several hours to what it would take for the IMS job alone.
The oil was changed after a brief run with break in oil after the Solution install.
Thats the reason its listed.
Also the plugs are removed for certification.
And obviously the clutch and flywheel are removed too.
The AOS was changed but I didnt include those hours
I definitely got a break with while youre in there hours.
So Im not sure what youre talking about.
How many hours did your Certified Installer charge for the IMS Solution?
I spoke to MM today to get a quote for a IMS Solution, RMS, clutch, throw out bearing, and flywheel. The number that was given was $6K, then I was asked if I had a manual or tip. I said manual so the price was $5K. I asked if I could use my own parts, and was told yes. I asked how much for labor, $1800. On further discussion I will be getting a written quote. It didn’t seem that $1800 was that firm.
Also, the shop has never installed an IMS Solution, but installs IMS retrofit kits. The mechanic seemed skeptical of the Solution. Hmm!
I ordered the IMS solution today with the free 30 day tool rental, RMS, and free cam plugs and tensioner seals. I also ordered a Sachs clutch kit and LUK dm flywheel from Rock Auto $940. And, finally ordered new flywheel and clutch bolts , $20 from Auto Atlanta.
All-in, about $2500 for parts. With only 30K miles on the car the clutch and flywheel are probably OK, but the car is 19 years old.
If, I decide to do the job myself I will have to purchase a tall transmission jack from HF for $250. I have all the tools needed to complete the job.
Good info to have!
Interesting!
Especially
considering they are a certified shop for that particular part. Did they give any specifics as to why?
Good luck with installing it yourself! If you're good with a wrench, it certainly seems like a nice way to save a bunch of money.
The person I spoke to said they havent seen very many IMSB failures lately, because the new owners probably take better care of their cars versus the original owners. It is fact that I believe the failure rate of the single row was/is 10%. Thats pretty high.
It sounded like they do some IMS retrofits, but he thinks that the IMS Solution as an overkill. He said if you drive your car hard and track it, then perhaps you might need the Solution. He also mentioned there are points of failure with oil fed line. That is kind of true.
I left the conversation not feeling warm and fuzzy and shaking my head. Lets see if and when he comes back with a quote. I am leaning towards a diy.
Does your car still have the original bearing?
No, my car has had the LN Engineering dual row ceramics put in. (Since it's an early '99 MY, its original IMS bearings were also dual row.) Mileage-wise, they're still good, but age-wise I think they are technically due for replacement.
Then again, what
is
the failure rate on ceramic (dual row) IMS bearings?
Are you thinking about upgrading to the Solution? As I recall, the double row bearings were the most robust as compared to the single row. If I remember correctly, their failure rate was around 1-2%.
@mffarrell
, yes I have. I have not had the IMSB updated there, as mine was already replaced prior to my purchase. I have had my Variocam pads replaced by them however.
So, I received a call this morning from MM expecting a quote for the work (labor only). I am told that the new owner wont allow customer provided parts.
Well, I guess I will be doing the job myself.
Marque wont let you supply your own retrofit?
I like Marque (dont love) but Matrix does these all the time, thats where I had my Boxster S IMS done. Just go there, theyre excellent. Not cheap, but excellent.
