Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have driven it since I installed the coils and it ran great, then I went to start it and will not fire up.
Leading evidence: 'Install coils and it ran great' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pass' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check coil pack connections' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

2 days later I replace all three coils on the suspect pass.

dying without any codes to me says fuel as electrical (spark) will normally toss a code into the DME (IIRC) - I forget how but I think you can check fuel at the rails - If you were just in there and now having issues I would also re-check the work you just did...connections ect.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2002 996 6spd. I had a misfire on the passenger side bank of cylinders a few weeks ago that lasted until I shut it off at my destination and would stay after restarting. Happened again just recently. Odd because 99% of the time I drive it, it runs perfectly. Then all of a sudden car died while driving. Lost all power like pulling the plug. Would not restart, but I had power to all electronics and it turned over no problem. Let it set for 15 minutes. Started right up no issues.
2 days later I replace all three coils on the suspect pass. cylinders (new plugs 1k ago), runs great to work. Come out after work , won't start. I am suspecting fuel pump or fp relay. I am also suspecting the crankshaft position sensor, where is this located and is it a biotch to get at? Anything else to suspect? I'm borrowing a Durametric tomorrow.
I have driven it since I installed the coils and it ran great, then I went to start it and will not fire up. turns over but no love. Gotta be fuel or spark but the no spark is tricky given that there are alot of possibilities. Almost like the DME cut the engine. Hoping the Crankshaft position sensor will be the culprit. I'm open to ideas... Thanks all.
Also, will the ignition switch failure keep the car from starting all together (like the old ...click....crickets....click...) or what I am seeing where it actually turns over but won't start?
Thanks alot. I need to swap it in a parking garage. Do I need to pull the rear wheel off to get at it? Is it potentially possible to replace it without a jack? ( this seems like an idiotic question, but have to ask)
Oh man.... it is held on by an allen screw and is a b*tch to get at (and I have a lift). You will need a jack.... remember, safety first. I will try to snap a pic for you....
edit: the sensor is burried under all that cable mounts (right side of the rubber bellows).... but I really cant see this sensor going bad, Its a passive device and acts as a proximity sensor (no physical mechanical contact). If you have a durametric, I believe you can monitor the cams via this sensor.
Man, that it awesome of you to take a pic for me like that. I really appreciate it. I ran the Durametric an found only 2 codes showing the previous misfires and thats it, its not much help in a no start situation with no good codes to work with. If it's physically possible to do without removing alot of stuff I will prevail. Thanks alot!
well I would take it easy throwing parts at it without knowing what's wrong (unless you like that plan)

you replace ALL (3???) coil packs theyre are 6 you know - might consider looking at the other side?? (though a coil should not cause a no-start IMO)
You might get by without replacing the crankshaft position sensor. The no start symptom might be due to corrosion at the connector. To address this disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness then connect it to the harness again.
The contacts will be renewed/rejuventated by the wiping action of the unplug and plug operation.
Unlikely the sensor will show up at an OBD2 error code. Emissions are not affected by this sensor's non-operation so there is likely no error code logged.
With a PST2 one might be able to look at the waveform from the sensor and from this know the sensor is at fault or not.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I realize that this is years later, but I wanted to close the loop on this issue. The issue with the no start out of no where ended up being a bad fuel pump relay. I had to flatbed it home and then look into the problem. I also replaced the fuel pump for good measure. That was fun submersing half my arm and operating a ratchet in gasoline.
Fuel filter is part of the pump assembly. Started up instantly after replacing the relay though.
