Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Answer: Ignore them.
How about the old flash of the lights-once again, ignore them.
What's up with that? As the current owner of a P.C.A. award winning 85 carrera I must say it is almost embarrassing to be associated with the "new" members of the Porsche family. Lighten up fellas! These are fun cars driven by fun people.
Actually I like the camradrie that I find amongst Porsche drivers around here. I tend to take weekend drives on a nice hilly circuit around here and it always makes me smile when I see another Porsche driver coming out of the hills the other way giving me a wave or toot of the horn. You don't find this congenial atmosphere amongst any other types of cars.
I agree with Alex - call me corny, but I love it when another 911 driver flashes me his or her brights and I return the compliment. I admit though, I tend to react rather than initiate the "hello" so as not to offend those not interested in such behavior.
I think you guys may have misunderstood me. I,too, enjoy being a part of what I consider a "tight-knit" porsche community. I always flash an on-coming porsche, no matter what the year or condition. My question was aimed at the "new" members(i.e. 996 owners) who, in my experience, tend to not reciprocate the flash or thumbs-up. I posted this message because I was just at a stop light next a 996 and after giving him the thumbs-up, he gave me the "cold shoulder". This has happened before and I just wanted to know what was up their @$$?
I'm happy to wave as well and enjoy receiving it, but there isn't too much of that around here and P-cars are EVERYWHERE. I think people are a little arrogant around here and think waving over the car is beneath them.
I say in that case, pull up to him at the next light and give him the "finger up"
I have to say though that the first couple times it happened I was quite surprised and didn't reciprocate myself. I think though that you may find that some people buying the latest model may be buying it simply for the image alone and not for the joy or camradrie that comes along with it.
As a 996 owner, I try to flash my lights at every Porsche I see. Sometimes not able to until they are already passed. Have noticed very little in the way of response. It's unfortunate that 'the flash' seems to be dying, at least here in SoCal.
No matter what the model, I usually give a modest, little wave. I figure more likely than not, they appreciate the car for the pleasure it gives, just like me. And that small gesture is a way to share it.
If they don't wave back or flash the lights, so what.
But if I see a smirk in response, or a nose lifted in arrogance, I have a second wave I give them.
I make a little circle with my thumb and forefinger, and wave with the other three fingers.
"Bye A$$hole".
I was next to an older Porsche (C coupe?)while driving my 996 , I looked at him and gave a thumbs up. No response at all, what a dick. Then I blew right past him.
There are idiots like that everywhere, not only in 996 models you cant generalize (I flash to all; any 911 is a fellow 911 no matter the year make), just ignore it and next time blow them off (theyre in just for the image... soooo pathetic). Saluting with the "V" sign on the left hand is a custom here (Europe) between motorcicle drivers on the road and the same thing sometimes happens, but 9 out 10 initiate the salute or reply to me.

I'm a 993 owner hope u guys don't mind me lurking around this board. This flashing/waving issue has come up several times and it's been my experience that a lot of 986 and somehow less 996 owners don't reciprocate and give u the cold look, although it happens with older model owners too so I cannot generalize just my own statistics. Probably it also depends on the area I'm on the Wash-Dc area ...where it surprises me when a 986/996 owner waves back.
Cheers
As a 996 owner, I take offense at some of these remarks. I've studied as much Porsche history as I could, and I know about the flash, and have known since a year before my 996 Cab arrived.
I always flash another Porsche, regardless of model or year, and funny thing is, some of the old-timers (earlier models) rarely flash back.
Take that.
Not a flame, just wish we ALL had the same level of enthusiasm for our cars.
Forget about it, Eric - the only true 911 is the one you own! My wife and I own a 996 and a 964, I wave/flash at all Pcars I see in time, some respond, some don't. Not sure it's safe to assume all 996 owners are new to the marque/bought it to look cool wannabes, though; we've been around for a couple decades owning and racing them.
Wish I owned one of each ...
I always wave (or flash) other Porsche owners, whether driving my 993TT or 996TT. Most return the favor. I remember that this same type of division existed when I got my first Porsche - '83 944. 911 owners would not acknowledge you half the time. Over time, that changed. This current watercooled/aircooled thing will change too.

The thumbs up just above is for all you P-car drivers, no matter what you are in.
The question is, "How many will wave at the Cayenne drivers?"
I, for one, think I will. Given the ground clearence they have in the spy photos, they could drive over my coupe like a monster truck.
Driving around in our 996 with my Dad, we've given a sign of acknowledgement to just about every Porsche owner we see in Vancouver, Canada. Not one single response.
That's not to say Vancouver Porsche owners aren't Porsche-people. The turn-out at the last Track day was very impressive.

I wave/flash all P-cars except for guys in 85 carreras who suffer from the dreaded "award winner" complex (those guys are so embarrassing..like being an "award winner" somehow makes their opinion more valid or something).
996 Owner...I wave , Flash or what ever else seem good at the time.
I even go out of my way to pull up next to other P-cars to just say hi. You never know when it might be one of my old buddies! If not in might be a new one.
Don't lump all of us 996ers with in the same pile. Some of us just wanted a good working AC and a 4 year bumper to bumper
After years of driving many different sports cars I find that Porsche owners here, in Tennessee, rarely wave to one another. Don't get me wrong, the Alfa, Healey and MG owners will just about stop you and ask to buy you dinner. I get a lot of stares and waves when I'm driving my '99 Speedyellow C4 but seem to get zilch when driving my G.Red 86 Carrera. What has happened to the "sports car code of conduct?
