Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
After the build only thing I really did was change fluids.

I can buy one now but I would have to use my life insurance and be deceased.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My esteemed RL peeps: After letting my 996 MKII C2 Cab go, it's been tough. I'm still reeling in from my loss, but the decision was a responsible one with both family and finance in mind; I have to live with that. While I love the Macan and enjoy driving it, it's way too tame in comparison. Now, I am constantly thinking about a way of getting something fun for the weekends. It can be a sports car or a 4 wheeler. Not a huge investment but only with play money. I'm thinking $3K-$5K. If hell breaks loose, I should be able to walk away without losing sleep. So, what do you recommend?
Few specs:
I don't want anything more than 20 years old unless there is potential for price appreciation
4 proper seats.
Manual transmission.
Prefer 6 cylinder.
Prefer a coupe, so that should stop your hairdresser jokes.
Few options I've considered: BMW e36, e46, 4x4 4Runner... The search continues.
Helpful recommendations are much welcome.
80-85 4runner with a 22re. The little 4 banger is completely bullet proof, and dirt cheap to maintain and repair. Finding one with minimal rust is the hardest part.
Chromoly birfields, welded rear diff, dual t cases, and 35's would probably set you back around $3000 if you did the work yourself, but that's something you could do over time and and that set up would let you tackle pretty much any obstacle. You could probably find one with most of these parts in your price ranege.
pirate4x4.com is a good place to start, loaded with more info you could ever think of. It's weird how info on the this forum is hard to find. You can find literally anything and everything for pretty much any motor swap, axle swap, etc on that forum.
95 4runner I built in highschool. Chevy 327 swap, 700r4 trans, and an np205 t case. Solid axle swap from an 85 with chromoly axles. Lots of other odds and ends tol. I worked as a fabricator so I did all the work myself over a summer break. I paid 1500 for the stock turd and put about 6500 worth of parts into it. After the build only thing I really did was change fluids. Stay away from 4runners with the 3vze unless you plan on swapping the motor. (90-95)

They are just about to start turning 20 now, but the BMW e30 can scratch most of those itches. I haven't kept up on it, but I hear they are starting to appreciate so now might be the time!
I have to wonder if you are doing it right in regards to the Macan. By all accounts it is much better than the Cayenne in the performance department and I have a blast throwing the P!g around. True it's no 911, but that doesn't stop it from being a blast to drive. Maybe take it to a local AutoX or DE so you can really get a feel for what it can do? Honestly after having driven the 996 and the Cayenne through AutoX classes, I'd rather run the P!g if it didn't eat through rubber like marshmallows (I need lower profile tires if it's something I really want to do).
Don't get me wrong. The Macan can easily deliver but it's me; I don't want to beat the sh*t out of it. I just know that I have power and performance on tap when I need it. I'm looking for something I can beat up and 1) it can take it, and 2) no worry about financial loss. I was thinking about e30 also but they're getting more and more expensive. E36 M3?
I like 4Runners. I think a nice 4x4 will come in handy now that my boys are getting to outdoor activity age. Camping, biking, hiking, etc. Ideally, I'd want a Rubicon Unlimited but they're too pricy. So 4Runner is the obvious choice.
get a mk4 GTI... it's fun and practical.. the 1.8T ones are good for chipping and huge power gain after
i would have also said a gen 2 MR2 toyota.. but you said 4 seats...
Nice. Give their number so I'll jump on this baby before it's gone.
But I do love Defenders. Prefer the 110 which is ultra rare and WAY (I mean astronomically) overpriced.
I was 4 days into 110 ownership when the spline on the output shaft of the gearbox stripped inside the transfercase...in France..UK car..day of the world cup final France v England.
Things between me and the 110 were always rocky after that.
Satisfy your 4x4 longings in Toyota land.
Love e39s. I think they're one of the best beamers ever. My brother had a white one and it was rock solid. This one is on the list. If I can find a 540 stick for cheap, it might be a winner.
Thanks for all the recommendations. I think I'm leaning toward beamers or 4Runners. The more and more I think about it, that maybe the choice. But KC, you have probably bought and sold 50 cars. I respect your picks.
It is kind of fun plugging in a $5,500 limit (assuming you could work that down to $5,000 even purchase price) and seeing what that will buy you on Craigslist. Actually there are some nice cars available at that price point if high miles doesn't bother you. Even with filters for manual tranny and 6+ cylinders, you still get a lot of choices. Have fun with it!
