It can go a few weeks without affecting a battery, but let's be honest, certainly not long enough to repair a Lotus!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last week I purchased a 1999 996 that's been sitting up for 18 months. It runs ok but it seems to have a parasitic drain on the battery. The original battery was dead so I purchased a new one. I was busy working on my Lotus for a couple of days but when I tried to start it this morning it's dead again. Before I start the long process of troubleshoot I thought I'd ask the members if there are some typical things on the 996 that might cause this issue? Thanks for your comments ...

POST 2Original post

Here is a link to a threads that may help. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...rain-help.html

POST 3Original post

i haven't read the posted link, but i would be interested to know if there is any aftermarket electronics installed, like, an aftermarket key less entry, alarm system, or a stereo system.. id start at anything that has been messed with, then other peeps can chime in or the link may help.

POST 4Original post

Make sure to fully remove the key from the ignition switch, not just turn it off.......AND it should make a distinctive "clunk" when removing the key... If it doesn't make the "Clunk" it will drain the battery..... Other than that it could be anything.....you will need to do "drain tests" to find out what is draining the power...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

996-cab, Thanks for the link Gary, there are no aftermarket stereo stuff installed Dr.h.c., Yes there is a Clunk when I remove the key Also, another question: Today I plan to sand and restore my milky headlight lenses and I noticed the water sprayer for the headlights is located at the 6:00 position instead of the 10:00 position. Is this unusual? 99% of the 996 pics show the washer at the 10:00 position. Just curious ...

POST 6Original post

Bill, that's a 996.1 headlight washer at the 6.00 o'clock position, versus 996.2 at the other position.

POST 7Original post

If you can, use a thermal imaging app to find a warm spot on the car. I've seen that done, to success, where you can find the hot spot and isolate the draw.

POST 8Original post

^ great idea! (they're also fun for spotting fake b**bs that show up as blue blobs. (I got bored at a ghost hunt party...)

The 996 does have a natural parasitic drain. It can go a few weeks without affecting a battery, but let's be honest, certainly not long enough to repair a Lotus! (Welcome to Rennlist, and 996 ownership -- you're going to love the car (would also like to hear more about the Lotus!))
