Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wondering if there are small changes I can do to get my 996 to be a bit zippier off the light? Of course I can just slam the gas down and watch her turn into a wild animal.... but in lieu of that...... Thank you!

POST 2Original post

Krohn, tell us about your car. What upgrades have you done so far to it?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good Question! 2002 996.2, 56,000mi, many many options from factory like travel package, winter package, PSM I have only had her for a few months; Took to a master mechanic that just works on German cars, its as perfect as when she left factory. I have not done anything else to help performance, though a few fun fixes that made me fee good and actually fixed stuff....sunroof seal, new air filters, got rid of front plate etc.

POST 4Original post

Hard launching a Getrag trans is a recipe for an expensive repair bill. They simply don't have a strong enough second gear to take the hit. Not unique to the Porsche getrag either.. I've seen it in BMW and other cars all too often. Even the 1-ton ford trucks getrag boxes do not reward speed shifting..

POST 5Original post

Congrats and welcome to the forum. Three things you can do that will help off the line. The first is software, second is a LSD, third is stickier tires. Software will improve your throttle response. The LSD to give you more traction since your 996.2 most likely came without an LSD, so one tire will spin. Sticker tires are pretty self explanatory. Upgrading your exhaust system can gain you some power as well, but most will be in the mid and upper range, not off the line. Hope it helps.

^^^^gotta agree. Not a drag car, but its an excellent track car.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great advice thank you both.

POST 8Original post

BTW the basic rebuild charge on the 996 trans is between about 4 and 5K... And it goes up rapidly if you did bad things..

POST 9Original post

OP - Issues affecting M96 nat asp initial acceleration: low torque below ~3200 rpm, grandpa throttle tip-in programming in ECU, wt/hp ratio of 10:1, DME software (timing, duty cycle, etc), PSM on. From least complex or costly, some ideas: *Turn PSM off in a Tip* 1. Throttle position calibration. Ignition position 2 for 60 sec. Do not touch pedal. Ignition off for at least 10 sec. -from Porsche literature 2. Clean throttle body 3. Sprint booster box…some people like it 4. Tune from a reputable source 5. Better exhaust breathing (not intake) a. 200 cell cats b. Headers 6. Displacement increase A 996 was never much of a dragster, with an advertised 4.8 sec 0-60. My first 996.2 experience with 200 cats, sport muffler and a tune I dropped 0-60 to 4.5’s with my 3.6. My current 996.2 has excellent exhaust, tune and 3.8 doing 4.2’s. Throttle response is good and initial torque is pleasing. Research a sprint booster and see if that’ll scratch the itch.

POST 10Original post

You didn't say if you had tip or manual. I'm assuming it's tip based on your "slam down the pedal" comment. I had a chance to try out a performance header once. Hated it. The car was noticeablely slower off the line but dyno showed higher hp above 4000 rpm. Best advice: don't worry about off the line performance. These cars live in the corners.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you .....will try playing with PSM,.... and maybe a few of the easier tweeks to learn how to play with the car more!

POST 12Original post

Fwiw, I have had my 996.2 for 21 years and it's no fun starting from a dead stop and shifting from 1st into 2nd. Put it another way, 0-60 is like getting a root canal. The real fun comes from accelerating from 2nd to 3rd then 4th and doing it while coming out of a turn or slowing into a turn. By the time you get to 5th and 6th you are just going fast and it gets kinda boring. Get to know the powerband and characteristics if your car. Take care of doing the right things to your engine for longevity. Plenty of time for figuring out how to make the car faster. Plenty of speed and power with the 3.6 today. You just have to figure out how to use it. That's the fun of 996 ownership.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agree there! Driving school is next for me.... still too much anxiety at the turns. Never planning on drag racing or other in the car just learning!

POST 14Original post

My 2cents worth.... A Good running 996.2 is fairly peppy off the line, auto or 6speed. Not sure what you have, auto or stick. The auto starts out in 2nd gear normally when in automatic mode. In manual push button mode it will start in 1st gear, that will help takeoff. Is the car missing or hesitating on take off..? Have you done the normal tune up parts like coil packs, plugs, injectors, air filter, maf, etc, that a 20 year old car probably needs..? Have you checked compression..? Does your car use oil...? Any check engine lights on..? If everything is working up to par your 996.2 should be quick off the line. Not drag race fast but plenty quick enough for around town stop light take offs. The rear engine layout give the 996 exceptional traction so no continuous tire spinning burnout take offs are 996 qualities. There are no quick cheap easy speed upgrades for the 996 na engines. Some vendor$ claim to have them but none ever materialize in reality as Porsche has the 996 engine pretty will maxed out and all the bolt on$ might get you another 10-15 hp in the real world reality if you're very lucky. And those few extra hp will coast you big mony. A dozen more hp is hard to feel in seat of the pants driving. jmo

I was very happy with my SprintBooster when mine had a 3.6. I gave it to a friend of mine with a 3.4 while mine was at Flat6Innovations. Now with the 4.0, I really don't miss having it.

POST 16Original post

Reducing weight would be your best overall option. Wheels and brakes for unsprung then seats, exhaust, battery for spung weight.

+1 I'm in the tuning process on my Flat 6 engine and the drivability is amazing. I have a Street+ engine with some upgrades. 3.8.

POST 18Original post

Practice launching the car. There little torque down low so slip the clutch until it hooks up, shoot for 3500 RPM or so to get the clutch fully out. Spinning the tires is loud and obnoxious and not very fast so avoid that. Smoking the clutch is expensive so avoid that too. Balance the launch between smoking tires and smoking clutch. Don't stack a bunch of RPM and sidestep the clutch or you'll be buying transmission parts; this isn't a Muncie 4-speed. PS. Best to do this to someone else's car or schedule the clutch replacement now. PPS. These cars don't make very good dragrace cars.

POST 19Original post

One of the great things about the 3.8 I have in mine is you dont touch the gas you just roll off the clutch and it takes off then you can hit it.. It's still like 1 second to second gear though.

POST 20Original post

Have deep pockets if you intend to stoplight race others. Your car was made to go fast around the track. A stoplight drag racer is not it's strong point.

You haven't answered the most important question -- is your car a 6-speed or a Tiptronic? No piece of information is more important to this discussion than knowing that. I've owned a 996.1 6-speed and a Tip 996.1. In good tune, the totally stock 6-speed is quite zippy taking off with light throttle (I interpret your "more zip" comment as being more about about feeling effortless in acceleration in normal driving rather than drag racing off of every stoplight). My stock Tiptronic felt sluggish off the line (compared to the 6-speed), so probably the answer is in trying to remap the auto transmission to perform better since the engine can be zippy in 6-speed form (and your 996.2 3.6 has more low-end torque than my 3.4's). As mentioned by @allcool , Tip starts in 2nd by default, so start with that and see what the impact is.
