Haven't had a need to use it on the 996 (have 2000 with e-throttle), but use ATF on vintage cars often.

I'm thinking about using TriFlow which contains PTFE.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Outcome without a verified action link

I discovered AFT after reading about a very common problem with cruise control sticking on a Mercedes forum, and ATF on the linkage was the only cure that worked.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The throttle cable on my '99 needs some lubrication. I'm thinking about using TriFlow which contains PTFE. Any other recommendations before I move forward with this?

POST 2Original post

The cable is very long right? (I have a 2k with ethrottle) You might want to make some kind of adapter for the end of the cable so you can seal it around a spray can nozzle, that way you can force liquid in without it going everywhere and it can make it all the way thru the cable You might also want to flush thru a cleaning spray first to remove wear debris from inside the cable before adding lube Personally for lube I'm a fan of Dupont chain wax lube, it sprays like a thin oil so goes in difficult places but then dries to a wax/light grease

POST 3Original post

Motorcycle shops sell a gadget you put on one end of a cable and then use a can of throttle cable lube with it and it pushes the lube all the way through.. Throttle cable lube is basically ATF, Most Boat control cables despite having zerk fittings, are supposed to be lubed with ATF not grease.

I have one of those gadgets, not that easy to use, but they help. Agree on ATF as a lubricant -- tried many and ATF is impossible to beat in my experience. Works great on throttle linkage as well. I discovered AFT after reading about a very common problem with cruise control sticking on a Mercedes forum, and ATF on the linkage was the only cure that worked. ATF lasts a long time also. Haven't had a need to use it on the 996 (have 2000 with e-throttle), but use ATF on vintage cars often.

POST 6Original post

The throttle cable is two pieces, connected at a coupler near the slave cylinder. So whatever you do, you will need to add the lubricant two places.

Well now thats a special little easter egg to discover when you lube it.. A leak near the tranny in the middle of the car..
