Goal: Great sound (Fister), good performance/environment (ceramic coating), clean look (right color scheme)...
Leading evidence: 'Clean look (right color scheme)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Any ideas on what would be a clean look I won't regret doing later or easy enough to remedy?

Because I'm have to repair the loose baffle and want to coat everything consistently, having the mod done at a local shop, and then taking everything for media prep, etc.

My only concern with that is if I want to change the wheels someday (or if someone else wants to).

Yes, I plan to use Cerakote on the headers and mufflers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm nearing the end of my header refresh, IMS, etc. on my 996 Carrera. I was going to leave the exhaust as-is, but then I thought about doing the Fister mod "while in there," and it got me thinking about coatings.
Goal: Great sound (Fister), good performance/environment (ceramic coating), clean look (right color scheme)... and collectively guided by not going crazy $$$.
This is what I'm doing / planning to do...
- Getting the cans modded (fister style)
- Discovered a loose baffle, so getting that repaired
- Ceramic coating of the headers and cans
Here's what I'm curious others might recommend...
- Coating or not coating pipes and/or tips
- If coating, color to use
I don't like the patina the exhaust develops over time, and not sure I want to be polishing/cleaning it all the time. And while I generally love chrome, I don't think the exhaust pipe chrome under this color car is a differentiator (but I also have not seen it in "original" form). So I was thinking of doing something akin to the look of the wheels (combo chrome/black), keeping the tips chrome and coating the pipes black. My only concern with that is if I want to change the wheels someday (or if someone else wants to). Regardless of what I choose to do with the tips, I was also thinking of coating the pipes with a subtle platinum color that will not rust/tarnish over time.
Has anyone done something like this? Any ideas on what would be a clean look I won't regret doing later or easy enough to remedy?
The Fister mod is key to a great sound. The stock exhaust is way too quiet for me. If you don't choose a coating, they will still sandblast them so they come back looking almost like new.
If you send the mufflers to Fister for mods they blast and coat them . Not sure what finish they use . I have their mufflers on my C4 and they applied a silver coating .
I have had two sets of headers done local to me with Cerakote . The guy media blasts them inside and out and then applies the Cerakote inside and out . Very durable and looks good . I went with silver to match the mufflers .
I do like the shiny tips against my black car . But if I was to coat them I would do black . I have aftermarket headers , a catless x-pipe and the Fister mufflers . My FSI 3.8 screams with this setup when your foot is in it . Drive normal and it almost sounds stock . Best of both worlds in my opinion .
Yes, I plan to use Cerakote on the headers and mufflers. Because I'm have to repair the loose baffle and want to coat everything consistently, having the mod done at a local shop, and then taking everything for media prep, etc. at a local shop as well. I like the idea of silver/platinum color tone throughout.
Ceracote sells a NO bake required version of the silver, it can be DIY ,, you WILL need a real chemical respirator to shoot it (Its very very harsh) . It takes a surprisingly small amount to cover, it likes a 80grit sand blast before application. The cheap small harbor freight spray gun works great...
