Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

It's not, and it comes from a very reliable mechanic who has worked on and raced Porsche's for 40 years.

There is a whole thread at the top of the 996 Forum on the IMS, sit back and do some reading would be my suggestion

Go away until you've done at least 5 minutes worth of research on this site.

POST 9Original post

Do some research of your own. If you want to pay someone thousands every oil change to replace the IMS then go right ahead. Your money, your move, regardless of how incorrect it may be.

POST 10Original post

Perhaps OP had a simple typo and meant 50,000 miles? But in general, the standard LN replacement is 75K. And my choice, in my car, the LN IMS Solution. I'm done with it...

I mean, it's *right* there....

POST 13Original post

If by IMS bearing you mean oil then most definitely yes.

You could have done a little research first (actually before buying), but I understand making a major purchase, hearing bad news and wanting a quick answer. By now I assume you've read it is a major issue. If you follow Bringatrailer, you'll see the same 996 without the IMSB upgrade sell for several thousand less than an upgraded one. They're are plenty of experienced owners and some actual professional Porsche mechanics on this site. You will find plenty of helpful responses on future posts.

Dal, did you drop one of the zeros by chance? 50,000 miles would be a more practical replacement interval than every 5,000. Surely you can see the problem here.

you need a new mechanic if that's what he really said.

POST 19Original post

I'm sure that was a typo and he meant 50,000, which is still aggressive. Good rule of thumb is under normals street-driving scenarios, replace it when you replace the clutch. The LN Retrofit as mentioned is good for 75K.
