Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There are two wires on either side that were disconnected - the appear to be the connections for the soft top rear window defroster (first pic).
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect the appear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good guess' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fluid and see if the cylinders were leaking' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also it looks to me like the soft top has been replaced at some point and it has a glass rear window with the defroster.

Suspected cause
I can't say for sure that those wires are for the defroster, but probably a good guess.

I will check on the routing and the hard top connector.

Also there is a double pin connector in the same harness area that is disconnected (last pic) - not sure what that is for or where it is supposed to go?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone!
I am new here and new to Porsche ownership having recently acquired a 2000 996 Cab. My top wasn't working right so I was getting into the rear deck to check the fluid and see if the cylinders were leaking. The good news is the cylinders appear dry but the fluid is a little low. I am going to try topping it off first and see what happens.
However, getting under the carpet I found another mystery. There are two wires on either side that were disconnected - the appear to be the connections for the soft top rear window defroster (first pic). Not sure why they were disconnected, but I am also trying to figure out to re-route them. It would seem that they would go inside the top with the connectors coming through right at the terminal point (second pic) - but I don't see any holes or passage that they could go through? Also there is a double pin connector in the same harness area that is disconnected (last pic) - not sure what that is for or where it is supposed to go?
I appreciate any insight and guidance - and look forward to hanging out here!
Do you have a hardtop? The soft top doesn't have defrosters but the hardtop does. If your car had the hardtop delete option that might account for the disconnected wires. The hardtop gets the connection through the bayonet mount (under that black plastic disk). I can't say for sure that those wires are for the defroster, but probably a good guess.
the double pin connector attaches to the hard top lock on drivers side for hard top defeost. The other wire slides up a small tunnel in soft top fabric from the bottom. It is a pain to slide up to connect though.
Awesome - thank you guys for the replies.
So interestingly I do have the hardtop but when I pulled the documentation it is listed as hard top delete. I am thinking maybe a previous owner acquired it? Also it looks to me like the soft top has been replaced at some point and it has a glass rear window with the defroster. Maybe it just was never connected. I will check on the routing and the hard top connector.
Yes you can get a replacement roof that has a glass window with a defroster. Maybe whoever installed the new roof didn't have the proper harness or was stumped by the hardtop delete.
Possible - what is odd though is the harness is plugged in and zip-tied. The ends just aren't plugged in...and I don't really see where to feed them up into. Not huge a deal - I have bigger projects to tackle and the roof seems to be working now with the proper amount of fluid. Thanks again!
