Was on the way to indy shop this morning to replace two new front tires because the wrong ones were ordered/installed last week (both our faults, frankly.

I had the tires replaced just prior to the trip since the old ones were worn out.

But it ran flawlessly, probably because I had tools along.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
75 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

One can fill the car up with spare parts and tools to the point he can't fit in the car but still not have everything one needs.
I will be taking it to Hershey this year.... What do you recommend I bring in my oh sh@t kit?
I know with my s2 it is standard to travel with a spare dme relay for example.
What if anything should I throw in the frunk?
The only thing I can think of is the key for your wheel locks - just in case. I have made more than a few long distance road trips in my C2 and C4S and other than gasoline I never needed anything. NNJ to Hershey should be a walk in the park. I've done Allentown to Clearwater round trip, Virginia Beach, Richmond, Mystic CT, Wheeling WVA, and honestly never a problem, well maybe one - I never wanted any trip to end.
Fresh credit cards for "Just in case!!"
I had the ign switch fail on me while on a trip. It was the "key still in ign" notification. Everything still worked so no stranding but I was concerned about the battery.
So I made up a tools and switch kit and put it in the frunk. That way I figure it will be one of the other 200,659 modes of failure next time. But never the ign switch again.
For a 1,500 mile vacation trip last fall I brought an OBD code reader, metric wrenches, and some misc. hand tools.
I had been having a throttle body code pop up that would essentially incapacitate the car until the code was cleared.
But it ran flawlessly, probably because I had tools along.
I have a code reader with me, that's about it, maybe some extra oil and/or some gas additive in case a station in BFE doesn't have premium. Anything happens that would involve tools and it's getting towed.
1. inform ccc that you're travelling so card will not get flagged
2. emergency warning triangle, flashlight, food, water
3. portable power for cell phone
4. printed route (in case GPS craps out). disregard if you already know the route
Leave the gun...take the cannolli! C'mon, really? Take your car keys and get a AAA membership. I like the "hookers and blow" suggestion best. Don't over think it. It's a car, it will get you there and back.
If you happen to see Jake Raby out in public, hit him with a tranquilizer dart and stuff him in the frunk. This should prepare you for most contingencies - except perhaps what happens when he gets loose.
When my wife and I were newly married, she was freaking out about what to pack on our first vacation, which was somewhere tropical.
As long as you have a pair of underwear, your passport, and your cash/credit cards, you have everything you could possibly need.
This has turned into a funny thread!
Guess I am used to the 944 crowd!
Already packed the H&B.... Always carry a Leatherman..... Have AAA plus.... No problem with credit cards.
Guess I am set!
Yeah, I remember when my son and I flew to Michigan to pick up and drive home his 951, the 944 forum made a big deal about what to pack. A fire extinguisher was considered vital. Then last fall, when my younger son and I went back to the same region to pick up and drive home the 928S4, we had the same mindset. Everything went smoothly on both trips though.
The difference is that the 996 is a modern, reliable car. So now that I have no doubt just jinxed your trip, try to relax and enjoy the journey!
What I always carry is:

Tonight on 996 gear, we have one of our 996 Gear Specials!
J Berk will try to drive his 996 for 200 miles without suffering CEF.
Johnny Irish will wear a snazzy hat.
And 5CHN3LL will attempt to get some from Hurdigurdi's niece.

Make sure the serpentine belt is good, all the fluids are topped off, tires are in good condition and at the proper pressure, and brake pads are good.
Suggested things to bring:
Cellphone and charger
Tire pressure gauge
air compressor (for small tire puncture)
booster pac or at least a set of jump cables ( if battery dies or drained inadvertently)
1L of engine oil
Some distilled water
I wouldnt take anything for the car, only stuff for fun. I think my car would go cast to coast in the morning if that was my desire. I go to LA often, round trip 600 miles. I never take anything for the car, don't even give it a second thought. If you do take the blow get a good stash.
Same here. I never pack anything for the car other than an extra quart or two of oil, some pieces of 2x4 to block the tires or provide some base for a jack in case.
I never carry any tools or spares. What would I carry? Last time 3 radiators went leaky on me and then the O2 sensors needed replacing. In another car it was an AOS. One can fill the car up with spare parts and tools to the point he can't fit in the car but still not have everything one needs.
All I do is as best I can ensure that the car needs nothing before heading out, that all services are up to date and nothing will be due on the trip, other than maybe an oil/filter service.
Also, before I head out I get the car a road worthiness inspection to make sure there are no leaks and the tires do not have anything in them and have sufficient tread.
This is important: There was at least one time when the tech reported the tires were worn and should be replaced and I didn't listen thinking I could nurse the tires 2K miles -- I mean it was only 2K miles -- and have new ones fitted at my destination and perhaps save some money. Instead down in Fresno a rear tire went low on my Turbo and I had to drive all the way home again -- fortunately the leak was a slow one so I could get a ways down the road without the tire getting too low -- then to Sacramento the next day to get 4 new tires installed.
On a somewhat serious note, if you purchased the deluxe IMS Guardian and opted for the optional support package, Jake(or one of his guys) would be available 24/7 for tech support if the Guardian went off.
What's the going rate for a standard bag of Porsche air? Dealer, Pelican or Suncoast. Part number??? is it 996 specific or any model and era Porsche air will work. Will air cooled air work in a water cooled car?
I drove my 2000 Boxster 1000 miles each way (Denver - Minneapolis) few years ago when I still had that car. I didn't carry anything extra for the trip. My drive was pretty much non-stop except for gas and bathroom breaks. I had the tires replaced just prior to the trip since the old ones were worn out. So, basically I put in 2000+ miles in about 5 days.
Don't worry too much and enjoy your trip. Make sure to pack your camera!
Oh, it's all good. I have similar questions to the guy above. Can I refill with regular air or do I need to find a station that carries N rated air? Does anyone carry N rated nitrogen while we're on the subject too?

...because when you have a rear tire flat on 285/3018", it won't fit in the frunk. Ask me how I know this
p.s. Was on the way to indy shop this morning to replace two new front tires because the wrong ones were ordered/installed last week (both our faults, frankly. Neither of us checked and just put what was on it because a dealer-cared-for 996 by the previous owner just HAD to be correct, right?). Hence, my participation in this week's tire rub discussion.
And by "on the way" I mean .1 miles before I realized something didn't sound right. The very nearly as new Pzero on the driver rear was flat. Note to self: check tires before leaving garage.
So after changing (I was a 996 tire change virgin), it won't fit in the frunk no matter the angle. (And yes, that's what she said.) So I guess I get to throw it in the rear (compartment)? The clean, pristine rear compartment that probably has never had the seats bent over. Sigh.
I just drove from Orange County, CA to Vegas and back this past weekend. Longest road trip I've taken in my '02 C2 yet. (~270 miles each way). I've had the car for just under 2 months at this point. Car performed great, and it was really nice to be in 6th gear, cruising along at slightly above the speed limit
, and still having it able to pull harder if I needed to pass or otherwise get on it.
I've done that drive a ton of times in other cars, and never once thought of it as fun. This car made it way better. Now, road noise. That's a different thing. Wound up just turning up the radio to drown it out. Previous cars were more cush as far as ride softness and road noise.
On the upside, stayed at the Golden Nugget this time around, and a 2002 C2 will still warrant the valets keeping it parked up front.
(Not sure that says anything. Might not have warranted the same treatment at the Bellagio or Wynn. It is the Nugget after all.)
I live in Vegas and go to Los Angeles quite often. When I drive the Porsche it makes the trip way more fun. If you come to Vegas again get a hold of me and I'll show you some nice roads near by.
Thanks JD. I actually lived in Vegas for a few years. I was thinking Blue Diamond out towards Red Rocks would be a fun drive, or even Valley of Fire. Wouldn't mind recommendations though. Was only there for two years, and didn't make a point to drive just for the fun of it until I bought this car.
Other than the c4s being far more thirsty than the s2....nope
With the s2 I could come up here... Drive from the hotel to the swap.... And home... On one tank of gas.
Had to stop half way up to top off the tank in the beast!
