Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been hanging out here a while taking in what I could before purchasing my 1st Porsche. I've had plenty of cars but never a 911. I've wanted one for a lot of years. This forum has been really helpful in building my knowledge and confidence to find and buy the right car. From early on, the goal was to find a 1999, 996, coupe with manual transmission. There were lots of them out there via Ebay, Craigslist and non Porsche used car dealers. There are plenty in the low teens. But those cars scared me with their 5 owner history and no records to speak of. I finally found a 1999 996 at Hemmings Online. The asking price was "INQUIRE". The ad read "1999 Porsche C2 Carrera, 6 speed, Silver/Black, 62K miles, 2 owner history, well maintained & cared for. Excellent paint, interior and body, rust and accident free, mechanically sound, clean CarFax. Includes new IMS bearing, clutch, separator and 2 rear tires. Ready to be enjoyed, needs nothing." The ad was placed by a dealer in Bedford Hills, NY by the name of Motor Classic & Competition Corp. When I spoke to the owner, Nick Soprano he let me know he still has the car, but it does have about 69k miles now, because he has been driving it for about a year. As it turns out, fortunately for me the car was advertised only in Hemmings and Nick's website. I believe if the car was on this site, it would have lasted only days before someone snapped it up. I've learned the good cars don't last here. Anyway the car has full leather package, dual power seats and the best part is one of the previous 2 owners upgraded to 18" hollow spoke turbo wheels and turbo brakes. The clutch, IMS bearing and oil separator was done by Rennwerk.com in Elmsford, NY. This forum was instrumental in helping make this purchase. I want to thank everyone here for posting up their personal experiences and knowledge. I'm not up on posting pictures here yet, but I believe you can still view photos on Nicks site. POST 2Original post

Bravo sir and well bought. We look forward to hearing your adventures. Are you a do it yourself type or have you found a shop that you want to do your work? Even though you live in a world with real winters, so do the Germans. Do not be afraid to drive your car in less than sunny weather. But pick up a set of beater wheels and set them up with snow tires for next winter. Have fun.

POST 3Original post

Nice job! You did well. This forum will help a person if they are willing to put up with some of us and sift through the responses to dig out the nuggets of truth. It looks like a really nice car!

I'm a do it yourself type. I've done a few Volvo to Ford 5.0 engine conversions, several VW Vanagon to Subaru engine conversions, even a '73 Superbeetle to 2.2 Subaru. I am presently working on a 1990 VW Vanagon Multivan getting a 230hp Subaru SVX 6 cylinder. So I think I can do a lot on this car outside of going inside the engine. People here talk about budgeting $2-$3k a year for maintenance. I'm assuming these are shop prices. What services require that amount of $$? I did buy the book, "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion", 6 months before looking for a car. I'm in Massachusetts near Buzzards Bay and the Cape Cod canal. I would like to find a good shop in the area if anyone knows of one, should I be in the need. I plan to buy a lift for my garage and do as much myself as possible. The 996 is a bargain and well worth any risk in my opinion. I have another car which I feel is a hidden gem and great value for the $$. Five years ago I bought a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire SRT6 convertible. Those who are familiar know the Crossfire is basically a Mercedes SLK and the SRT6 version is the AMG version. It seems to be a love it or hate it car. Only 928 SRT6 convertibles produced, 330hp, 310 ft lbs. One owner 50k miles, bought 5 years ago for $15600 and has been dead reliable. 80% german parts and assembled in Germany by Karmann. It is also German, ...I thought I'd share.....

POST 9Original post

Nice find! Go out and enjoy! I used to live in Boston, and I don't recall anyone on the Cape or Deep South Shore area that you can go to for advice, work, etc. My suggestion is join local PCA (Northeast Region), they will have some info on good shops, I believe Jerry over at European Performance in Natick might be able to help. GL, enjoy the new beauty

POST 10Original post

I've often wondered about Crossfires myself. They'll turn up again in 30 years at Pebble Beach. By getting a 3.4 with Variocam instead of a 3.6 with VariocamPlus I think you will have fewer oil pressure related issues in the valve and cam systems. If you can find a pair of OEM 17" rims you should grab them and let them be your winter wheel/tire set up. Have a wonderful time.

POST 11Original post

Congratulations! Very nice. Hope you enjoy the 996 driving experience as much as me.

POST 12Original post

Congrats and enjoy. Keep that tach needle pointing right

I don't think I'll be driving it during the worst of the winter here. They lay a lot of salt down to melt the ice off the roads. The joy of wrenching on your own car goes away when your fighting rusted fastners and parts. I use the "Workhorse" for winter.....1998 Volvo V70 T5 5 speed...This car has a set of Bridgstone Blizzaks for winter. You fellow Nor'easters know what we deal with, right? BTW I used to live on Friar Street in Van Nuys right off Van Nuys Blvd. That was back in the '80s and when I got hooked on VW Beetles. I know Sherman Oaks very well.
