Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
New spark plugs, new motor mounts, serpentine belt, check all coolant hoses, check all bushings and suspension joints, look for leaking shocks, and add this to all the other stuff for another two or three thousand.
Leading evidence: 'Use lne parts and he's "known chuck well' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bushings and suspension joints, look' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I'd put in new spark plugs, and inspect the plug tubes for leaking seals.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just received my 996 this morning, black on black on black, 60k miles... I've owned plenty of Euro cars over the past decade (mostly Audis & BMW, one Cayenne once), with an Audi S6 as my daily driver... My old man has his fair share, as well, with an 87 911 Turbo being the only constant, the one car he will keep forever, while other models come and go.
As such I am no stranger to the maintenance costs of such vehicles but thanks to these forums I try to stay ahead of catastrophe and that maintenance cost is offset by the pleasure and enjoyment these vehicles provide
Figured I'd intro myself to this side of the forum and share a few pics.
Also, it's currently in the shop for an oil change and the whole once over BUT in keeping ahead of the big problems my only question is re: IMS...
Owner I bought the car from said the previous owner had done it, at 40k miles... Car now has 60k... Any way of double checking if all is still OK?
If I want to be 100% pre-emptive what am I looking at to replace it? The kit and labor? Would I also do the clutch while that process has begun, how much extra parts cost and labor cost does that add? Any idea on total costs and/or number of hours of labor.
Thanks all.
Congrats and welcome. Only way to know if current IMS in car now is still good: take it out. If you decide to tackle this preemptively, then good idea to have clutch (and RMS/AOS) done at the same time.
Cost of parts & labor? Can you DIY? Have a good/trusted Porsche mechanic near you? (preferably an indy vs a dealer).
Congrats on a good looking Aero. What year? Any interesting options? Just verify the I#$ was done and stop worrying about it. Mine is a 99 C2 with 70k miles, original clutch and engine and I#$ and continues to be great fun to own and drive.
1999, it does have NAV (16yr old NAV is nothing too exciting hah), the exterior obviously has an aero/gt3 like kit, and it has fabspeed intake... other than that stock
I can't stomach DIY, I've tried to get more into that stuff with prior cars but I can only tackle the basics... I have a Porsche indy I trust, they do a lot of the track cars in the area (I am in SF), so they'd knock it out for me
Sounds like you guys are thinking with it being done at 40k, go out and drive it, have fun, and don't worry about it?
With that said, in being conservative how many hours and what part costs for clutch (RMS), IMS, etc. in one fell swoop... Thx!
Nice car-
To each his own, but I would do the "full-monty" unless you have records indicating otherwise:
LN-IMSB/RMS/AOS/Clutch
Water pump/LN low temp stat
LN magnetic drain plug/ spin-on adapter
Plan on 4 LARGE ($4k) at an Indy.
...but that's me.
Have fun, great cars.
Flush the brake fluid, coolant, trans fluid, clutch fluid...give it all new fluids. New spark plugs, new motor mounts, serpentine belt, check all coolant hoses, check all bushings and suspension joints, look for leaking shocks, and add this to all the other stuff for another two or three thousand. But do all this before doing anything else. And don't modify anything until you've had the car and been driving it for at least six months.
Great-looking car... congrats!!!!
Be aware that the IMSB thing is a topic here that is, shall we say, controversial, at best. Probably in the range of $1,500 to 2K if you want to replace it, and nothing else. Seems to make sense to me to do some "while you're in there" stuff, so figure a few K total. You'll get as many who say to replace it as who say don't worry about it. No right or wrong on that issue.
There is no way to inspect it, or even verify that it was swapped out (unless the PO has receipts).
If it was changed there should be paperwork. If you find proof it was changed I would do nothing, if not its a decision each owner has to make. Many do nothing and its working out fine. Many did nothing and they wish they had. Many do it and something else bites them in the *** anyway. As you can see there is no RIGHT answer. In my opinion if you do have it done its best to have it done by a shop that has been certified by Jake Raby.
Just paid about 3K for clutch, IMS, and RMS. If yours is the 99, I'd assume you probably have the dual row IMS. I'd say wait until you need to replace the clutch then do the IMS replacement at that point.
Now WHY are these Good Cars to have? Lol! I Guess because they're soooooo Cheap to Own! That & Most people can't tell the difference between mine & a $100k+ GT-3, Unless they know what they're lookin' for!
PGC9 WELCOME to the Club & ENJOY your Nice Ride!
Thanks all!
So to all of your advice, step one for me is:
1) Re-installation of the catalytic converters so that I can pass CA Smog. Previous out of state owner did not have them on, which sounds pretty cool, but CA emission laws are tougher than the rest of USA so that's step one... (Can't register the car until I pass smog :-))
2) As a result of your advice, I want to play it safe and be able to enjoy the ride with peace of mind. Given that its not a daily driver I want it to be about fun and not needing to worry. As such, I will knock out
* Rear Main Seal, etc.
* IMS and such, my indy used LNE parts and he's "known Chuck well for 10+ years"
* Clutch while they are in there... The clutch they think is at 50% or so, worth doing because I'll save on the labor, or worth skipping out on the parts cost given its fine? Any advice here...?
* Upgrading engine fasteners bolts
* Replace camshaft solenoid
What might I be missing? This whole above project is in the realm of $3200-3500, sound about right? Keep in mind I am paying SF Bay Area labor costs per hour.

Change out the AOS. An inexpensive part.
I'd put in new spark plugs, and inspect the plug tubes for leaking seals.
Items to consider (not necessarily replace): Water pump and fuel pump. They always seem to fail at inopportune times. Not just 996s, but any older car I have ever owned. Gives me some peace of mind to replace them on older cars.
