I don't think it matters regarding oil consumption but given where I live/drive and the mild winter temperatures and often very hot (100F+) summer high temperatures I run Mobil 1 5w-50 year 'round.

Suggestion

If the oil is run too long it gets contaminated with combustion by-products which make it more likely to foam more and can thin it out -- mainly the water the oil collects -- and these can contribute to oil consumption.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys (and girls), I have only been a member for a couple of months but I think you guys are great!!! Anyway, maybe you can help with this question. I have a low miles 996 Turbo Cab for three months. It seems to me that the oil use is maybe excessive. I had to put a quart in even though it is a weekend car. Do 996s and 996 Turbos use more oil than other models? I have a 1986 911 and an '07 Boxter with no such issues. Thanks in advance!!! Ricardo

POST 2Original post

You can easily burn through a quart of oil in a few thousand miles in a turbo. I think this is normal, plus my Turbo does this. My 02 boxster didn't burn a drop of oil.

The Turbos do not as a class use more oil, but of course they can use more oil than other engines. It just depends. My experience with my Turbo is its oil use goes up when I push the engine really hard. I suspect the oil is being pulled past the turbo oil seals. But the tech has not commented on any excessive oil in the intercoolers when I have had the car in for say new plugs and when driven more sedately, even say for 2K miles on a recent drive from the mid-west to CA, oil use is low, but still more than my Boxster's. For instance, I had the Turbo's oil/filter service done in Springfield MO Porsche dealer and then drove 2K miles home and have driven another 1300 miles since. Just the other day I added a quart of oil to bring the oil level up to the max line level. The Turbo oil level will drop but not enough to require I add oil before its next 5K mile oil/filter service. The Boxster engine will require a quart of oil between its 5K mile oil/filter services, but not until much closer to its 5K mile oil/filter service interval. All you can do is be sure the oil is reasonably fresh and of the right type/kind of oil. I don't think it matters regarding oil consumption but given where I live/drive and the mild winter temperatures and often very hot (100F+) summer high temperatures I run Mobil 1 5w-50 year 'round. (This is not a typo for 15w-50!) And I change or have changed the oil/filter every 5K miles. Avoid over filling the engine with oil. This can result in an increase in oil consumption. If the oil is run too long it gets contaminated with combustion by-products which make it more likely to foam more and can thin it out -- mainly the water the oil collects -- and these can contribute to oil consumption. No need to get all crazy with too frequent oil/filter changes. I have hit upon 5K miles which probably given how I drive is probably a bit shorter than it could be but I prefer to err on the side of caution. There are oil leaks to consider too. My Turbo developed an RMS leak. This was not bad enough to affect "oil consumption" but you need to have your car/engine checked for an oil leak. If you want, the tech can expose the intercoolers and check for excessive amount of oil in them. If there is oil collected this can be due to failing turbo oil seals. There can be a little oil -- the surfaces can be oily -- and this I'm told is nothing to worry about. Also, the turbo inlets can be exposed and if the compressor wheel is wet with oil this can be a sign the turbo oil seal is leaking excessively. Be sure you let the engine idle some -- 2 minutes is called for in the owners manual -- before shutting off the engine. This is to let the turbos cool down some which helps preserve the oil seals.

Thanks, you guys were very helpful. I figured the Turbo was acting normal as it has only 35K miles. I will remember all your advices. And yes, I let it idle for two minutes prior to shut down. I have had it for three months and this car is AWESOME. It is so poised in turns and its acceleration is almost scary. I still can't believe it is mine. It is interesting but the values of the 996TTs have gone down a lot. I got mine for a good deal, with low miles and a matching color convertible top. I don't know whether it is better to look at it or drive it !!!!! Thanks again!!!

POST 5Original post

I thought prices were beginning to trend up, but it may just be my imagination. I almost had purchased a really low mileage car (for a great price) but I didn't pull the trigger in time. My turbo was bought with 48K miles, but I will likely own the car for a while as Its an amazing drive and has always been my dream car since buying my boxster in 2002. I think if you search around you'll read that these cars burn a bit of oil.
