The new key 'shaft' of course doesn't unlock the doors manually and the original set will unlock the door using the original key shaft, but not "auto-lock/unlock" with the FOB.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

99 996.1 with a transplanted 03 3.6L motor. I had to change the Ignition Assy (& other goodies . . . Instrument Cluster, Main Harness, etc.) during the swap in order for the 3.6 harness to function appropriately. Now of course my electronic door locking doesn't work with the new key FOB, but everything else works great! So I was getting prepared to send my ECU/DME, key//FOB, & Immobilizer to ECU Drs to sync things up in order for the "electronics" to function, when I stumbled across another question on this process. The new key 'shaft' of course doesn't unlock the doors manually and the original set will unlock the door using the original key shaft, but not "auto-lock/unlock" with the FOB. So the question is . . . Would I have to swap out the physical door locks (good luck finding a set that works from my new Key Shaft/FOB) or can the door locks themselves be rekeyed (or even the Ignition Assy)? Is this simply a matter of swapping the "pill" between the old key FOB and the new one? (I don't think so as the shaft of the new one will not turn in the door lock.) Yet I need the "new" key shaft to start the car because the 'old' shaft won't turn in the ignition. I'd like to get down to a single key set for all functions. Please let me know and TIA. POST 2Original post

Several way to do, you have to decide. The key "blades" can be swapped between keys. You can order door locks "specially coded" to the VIN of the vehicle you want them to fit ( If you own it) You can order ignition lock "specially coded" to the VIN of the vehicle you want it to fit ( if you own it). You can order glove lock "specially coded" to the VIN of the vehicle you want it to fit(if you own it) These are mechanical parts that need no programming...

Good to know! As in DOH!! (I can't believe I did that) LOL

POST 5Original post

I would think a competent locksmith would be able to rekey the door locks to take the ignition key, I have had it done done many times, but only with regular cut edge keys, so maybe its more complicated with this type of key.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 18097921

Yep, "IF" they are competent..lol...These keys have "horse-shoe type" pins/tumblers in them instead of the old regular pin type that most lock-smiths have on hand... OP you can also put your "original" ignition "lock" back in the car and just swap the key"blade" from the original key to the "new/used 03 key".......

No problem. Post a picture of your interior so I can see if I need any parts from inside your car before I head up there with my duplicate of your keys. Ha, wouldnt be worth itbut some yahoo that lives closer to you.well you never know At least they wouldnt be able to start it, but they could open it and unlock the steering.

POST 8Original post

A1 Safe and Lock here in my little town was able to successfully cut a brass blank for me that I purchased online from Suncoast or Pelican, it works fine. I am getting it (the new e-fob) coded to the car in the next week or so at my indy. New keys for 996 are NOT cheap. Sheesh. Correction, nothing for a 996 is cheap. Note that the A1 chap did mention that he could ONLY cut the key if it were brass. Whatever other material Porsche keys might come in, I do not know. But presumably the harder materials are more tricky?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
