Suspected cause

I suspect the problem is due to overly gross tolerances in the dual-mass flywheel and clutch system in some cars.

Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was wondering if any of you guys experience an abrupt "kicking" when disengaging the clutch (especially in 1st gear). During low RPM's it's pretty noticable, and all you have to do is step on the clutch: the effects are a loud "thud" and a small shake. My question is, "what the hell is that" and "can it be fixed"?

POST 2Original post

It all depends how often this happens and how you disengage. I've had this happen before on very low RPM dissengagement ...almost lugging the engine speed. The "shaking" noise is most likely the shift cables.

POST 3Original post

I know exactly what you are talking about. My car has had it since new and basically you just learn to live with it. It never happens if you let the RPMs drop completely to idle almost to the point of lugging before depressing the clutch. If you don't wait, you get that terrible "klunk".

POST 4Original post

First off; clarification because some terms have been mixed up. The problem does not occur when you disengage (release) the clutch but when you fully engage (depress) the clutch. Plus this is not the same problem as the shaking stutter that can be felt when lugging the engine with the clutch partly engaged in first, I suspect that occures in all 911s (and many other manual cars). This specific problem occurs anytime the engine can drop RPM immediately upon clutch engagement. The best examples are when you're decelerating in first, or when you suddenly fully engage the clutch after partial engagement in first (when creeping in traffic). The awful bouncing thud is loudest in first at low speeds, though it's sometimes noticeable in higher gears and speeds. DON'T LIVE WITH IT!!! This type of behavior is unacceptable in any car never mind an enormously expensive performance car. Excellence indeed... I suspect the problem is due to overly gross tolerances in the dual-mass flywheel and clutch system in some cars. Your dealer will tell you that the problem is normal. They are lying. Make them try to prove that it's normal by recreating it in one of their demo cars. They will fail. And it isn't the fault of bad driving/ownership because it happens from new (i.e. from 0km). I am forcing my dealer to bring in the "local" Porsche rep so that he can tell them to fix it. If he tries to **** with me Porsche WILL be buying my car back for what I paid for it.

POST 5Original post

It's an awful sound but it's very managable. The only time that I ever get it now is sometimes when pulling into my garage. There is a slight slope to my driveway so I give it a little gas and slip the clutch a little to get in. Once I am in, I fully depress the clutch and clunk. I used to do it all the time driving around parking lots looking for spaces etc... I just wait for the RPMs to drop completely and no more clunk. I haven't done it outside of my garage in a long time. I am definitely curious as to the outcome of your complaint with Porsche. Please post here to let others know and I would definitely appreciate an e-mail update ([email removed]).

POST 6Original post

I've experienced the same thing on occasion with my '00 coupe. Definitely let us all know what Porsche has to say about this!
