I used a flat head screwdriver to open up the crimp in the clamp and threw it away.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2002 996 with 85k Getting rattling/clunk from front end and squeaky steering wheel only after car has been driven for awhile.
everything has been replaced within in the last 2 years except inner tie rods which Ive read may be the problem.
im going to have my buddy tackle the replacement but is there any tricks to getting the inner boot on and off? He looked at it when we did the outer rods and said it didnt look like it be straight forward.
should I have him do the sway links too..they only have about 10 k on em
Hes just not familiar with Porsches.... hes taken care of my other cars for years and is very good. Trust him more than any shop in my area. He just wasnt sure about the clamp removal with it being so tight in that area but he didnt get a good look either since he only did the outers that day
If its oem, i recall the inner clamp to be an oetiker clamp. To remove you just get a flat headed screwdriver into the hoop and spread it open until the clamp falls off. Easy stuff.
I would recommend the harbor freight inner tie rod removal tool. Works like a champ to remove and reinstall.

Just did the job on my '99. Turning the wheel to whichever direction to extend the rack outwards helps and makes it easy to get to. I used a flat head screwdriver to open up the crimp in the clamp and threw it away. Replaced with a standard worm drive hose clamp. Access is pretty good from the bottom when it came to tightening that up, again extending the rack as far as possible.
Loosening the inner tie rod...pipe wrench:
Thanks for all the tips...I called the shop down the road from me and they said theyd do it for 1 hour labor. I can pass that up. significsntly different from the $500 quote I got from Porsche that prompted me to ask my buddy to do it.
