Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You can take the car back to whomever installed the engine and have the shields, exhaust system, and so on checked out.
Leading evidence: 'Install engine and have the shields, exhaust system, and so' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check heat shield bolts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced both with ones sourced from a salvage business and the car became quiet.

Suggestion
Why not crawl underneath the car and have someone rev the crap out of it...or just check the heat shield bolts to eliminate that possibility?

Suggestion
When you change the oil use a *clean* drain pan and a smaller one, very clean!, for the contents of the oil filter housing.

Suggestion
Still, if you want to be doubly sure, you can drop the oil filter housing and dump the contents into a *clean* drain pan.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Heat shields have been known to get loose, the hardware rusts. I even found some studs missing nuts that hold the stiffener panel to the car. Do not recall if there was any noise associated with this condition but I replaced the missing nuts pronto.
Another source of noise is a converter "brick". Had this with my Boxster though I thought -- hoped -- it was heat shield noise. But when I took the car in -- finally -- the tech confirmed it was coming from the converter. I replaced both with ones sourced from a salvage business and the car became quiet. Markedly quiet. Amazing how much noise the loose brick in the converter was making.
There is also the slim possibility the noise is coming from inside the engine.
'course, I am thinking mainly of the big old bad IMSB.
However, if the noise is only present under acceleration and is not present at idle, if the engine is otherwise behaving ok, the odds are it is not the iMSB.
Still, if you want to be doubly sure, you can drop the oil filter housing and dump the contents into a *clean* drain pan. What you do not see, or what you see, then plays a role in what your next step is.
Don't necessarily think it is IMSB related. I was just being thorough and cautious.
How long ago was the engine replaced? The noise could very well be a heat shield as maybe a mistake in this area was made and a tech forgot a fastener, or one came loose. As I mentioned earlier about those missing nuts. I found these missing some time -- I can't recall how much time -- after I had the car in for a RMS job. My assumption is these came loose because the tech failed to install them properly. They didn't come loose before the RMS job and they have not come loose in the hundreds of thousands of miles since either.
You can take the car back to whomever installed the engine and have the shields, exhaust system, and so on checked out. Might not be a heat shield, or even an exhaust related hardware item making the noise. Could be something else that has come loose and is making contact with something it shouldn't.
Thoughts? Guesses? WAG's??? Why not crawl underneath the car and have someone rev the crap out of it...or just check the heat shield bolts to eliminate that possibility?
New meaning new engine was put in by dealer in MA a few years back by the PO.
I am planning an oil change this weekend. Just wanted to see if there were obvious areas that I should focus on.
Well, the heat shields for one. The exhaust system for another. You are looking for the loose shield, the exhaust hanger or where one attaches to an exhaust component that has cracked or come loose.
When you change the oil use a *clean* drain pan and a smaller one, very clean!, for the contents of the oil filter housing.
If you spot scary stuff in the oil then you have found the source of the noise. I do not think you'll find any thing but this should be your first step prior to searching for the source of the rattle.
If the oil looks ok then as DBJoe996 suggests get under the car and give a listen and try to pinpoint the source of the noise. It probably will be evident where the noise is coming from and from knowing this then you know what's probably wrong.
Just looked under the car. Definitly a heat shield loose. The ones above the muffler near the bumper I can wiggle up and down and certainly seems like the sound they make when they slap against the muffler. How should they be attached? Are they attached to the underside of the bumper where there is more heat insulation or to the muffler?
