Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ran the codes with engine link and got P0102 that has to do with the MAF.

Grounding bolt removal and throttle body clamp removal makes it so you can take the whole air box to your bench, remove sensor with the above bit, clean without touching the sensor anywhere but the base, following directions on the can or youtube.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Job takes less than an hour and it fixed my problem.
three times in the last three months my car has been hard to start. When it does start it has died on idle. If you start it and keep the revs up it stays running. After you take off it will not die when revs fall and all is fine for another month. I ran the codes with engine link and got P0102 that has to do with the MAF. Is this related?
If there are any other ideas I would love to have them. Thanks.
You can try cleaning it. The auto parts store carries MAF cleaner. It is worth the couple of dollars to try cleaning it before replacing it. Takes ten minutes tops.
I have had the same issue. Lots on youtube but make sure you use he correct MAF sensor cleaner, not anything else. You will need a #20 security torque bit to remove MAF. Wiring clip comes off the sensor easily. Grounding bolt removal and throttle body clamp removal makes it so you can take the whole air box to your bench, remove sensor with the above bit, clean without touching the sensor anywhere but the base, following directions on the can or youtube. While you are there, clean the airbox and throttle body with right products. Job takes less than an hour and it fixed my problem.
If you need a new MAF, they are $240 or so at Pelican Parts. By disconnecting the battery, you will reset your code storage. Make sure you have your radio code it its an older Becker. If your CEL comes back after driving, probably need a needs a new MAF. Mine stopped throwing a code and runs well.

rwiii, here's a good test:
To gain more information about the problem, you can try disconnecting the sensor completely and take the car for a drive. If you take short drives (30 minutes or less) with the sensor disconnected, it shouldn't cause any major damage to your car. The engine management system (DME) will enter into a type of "limp mode" that will compensate for the missing MAF. If engine performance improves dramatically when disconnecting the MAF, then the problem quite likely lies with the MAF.
Don't rush out and purchase an MAF just yet, you're on the right track to clean first and further troubleshoot. Here are a few other points on the topic within our replacement article but again there are a couple of other things to consider before having to buy one:

Thanks PelicanParts. I am a customer of yours.
When driving the car with it in I can't tell any performance difference and the problem only occurs once a month. I can't replicate it. I would like to try cleaning.
Can someone put up a pic and circle exactly where it is? I don't know terms that you would tell me that it is near. Thanks all.
Thank you for choosing Pelican!
The sensor is mounted to the black engine intake pipe - look at the picture at the bottom of the above referenced article. You'll need a Torx bit for this and a can of CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner.

This DIY shows the MAF sensor in several photos:

If you decide to replace the MAF, just follow the DIY.
Make sure the MAF cleaner fluid is Porsche approved or has at least an N442 rating before spraying into the throttle body......see "Good week in the 996 forum" thread for further info
