The car will still blow pretty clean without them.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Your point is moot, but I admire your effort to strictly adhere to the ridiculous emissions laws that are made by the same people who are currently running the state into the ground.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm looking for a cat bypass option for my 3.4 996 to complete my Fister D set up. I've been looking for details between the two other than one is a connected X and the other crossed over.
Does one perform better than the other in regards to HP?
Is one quieter than the other?
I understand there are not many ways to squeeze any additional power out of these NA Porsches, however, removing cats have typically showed to free up a few ponies and a software tune helps a bit. This is why I am only limiting myself to suspension, aesthetics, intake (heavily debated), software and cat bypass for the most part.
If anyone has any experience between the two bypass pipes, please chime in. Thanks!
Forget about cat bypass. First you will never get through CA emissions, second you will hurt low end torque. If you want to upgrade your exhaust then spend money on 200 cell cats. And I would recommend either AWE or Cargraphic. These companies "performance test" what they sell. There may be others, but these two companies build for performance.....
Test pipes with your Fister D's will give you a nice sound. I think it'll be a bit too quiet with 200 cell cats. As for CA emissions, I wouldn't worry about that so much; it only takes about 20 minutes to swap the cats in when you need to go in for emissions testing
I was thinking the same thing.
However, I don't want to sacrifice too much usable low end torque.
Won't having the original mufflers help as there will still be some back pressure? I've had other vehicles (BMWs) with no cats, but exhaust systems still in tact creating just enough back pressure to yield a nice tone and free up some back pressure withought the feel of losing any low end power.
Are there any dynos floating out there with and without cats on a stock 996?
I know the Fister D's are modded, but if I recall correctly they are still what one would consider a "full on muffler setup." I have Fabspeed Supercups, which are nothing more than glorified bypass pipes with small resonators welded on, and along with cat bypass pipes I do notice a loss of torque at under 4k rpm. But I would think that your Fister Ds would provide significantly more back pressure than my supercups. It sounds like you're used to a more aggressive sound, so if I were you I'd try to score a used set of cat bypass pipes and see how you like them before you spend $x,xxx for a pair of decent 200 cell cats......
This is not true...... Are you referring to the inspection portion of the test, or the actual smog test? The rep I spoke with at Fabspeed said that their high flow cats pass CA emissions with no issues...... Also I have lots of friends who run high flow cats on other vehicles and they pass emissions testing just fine..... If you're referring to not passing visual inspection, there are PLENTY of places that will overlook non C.A.R.B. certified mods like exhaust, headers, aftermarket cats, air filters, etc. Ask any Porsche indy or exotic car tuner and they will be able to direct you to a "friendly" smog shop
The laws/regulations that define a passing a smog check agrees with my statement, which was my point in case the original poster didn't feel like having to find a cheater smog check station. You can also not register the car at all, maybe a cop will overlook that, too
Your point is moot, but I admire your effort to strictly adhere to the ridiculous emissions laws that are made by the same people who are currently running the state into the ground. The OP has already stated that he has owned multiple vehicles in the past that had test pipes installed, so I'm sure he knows what he can or can't get away with in the state of CA. Also I'm sure that if he was worried about whether his aftermarket parts were going to pass visual inspection that he would take 20 minutes and install his oem cats before he goes in for a smog check
His point isn't moot but yours on the other hand, is all about cheating the system. As for sayimg what the OP might or might not know/do.........let's not start putting words in other people's mouth.
I'm not putting words in the OP's mouth, read what he wrote and draw your own conclusions:
He's one of the MILLIONS of Californians, myself included, who have chosen to modify their car with "non C.A.R.B. certified" parts at one point or another. I'd venture to guess that almost EVERY Porsche owner on this forum who is from CA and has their car modified is not in compliance with the "law," yet they are just fine..... I think you guys are making a big deal out of a law that isn't as strictly enforced as you think it is. Common practice vs. strict interpretation of the law are 2 different things...... Do you know how many modified cars are on the road in California? Do you think that the majority of them have issues registering their car due to modifications? Just like how going 1mph or more above the speed limit is technically "breaking the law." You can pick on this argument and try to win your point and make it clear that everybody should adhere to the law 100%; meanwhile you own a sports car that is designed to break the law on public roads. I'm sure you NEVER speed, right? You guys need to loosen up......
The original point of the thread was to answer the question of whether the original poster should get cat delete pipes or crossover pipes. A few individuals mentioned possible issues with passing emissions in CA, and I responded with a counter argument that challenged their reasons not to have these parts installed. Now what's your problem? It's not like I'm telling him to go murder somebody. You must have another agenda :treehugger:
Easy with the name calling. Your counter argument is only possible if you are willing to find someone to brake the law with. There is nothing treehugger about this, if it's illegal, it will be illegal, even if you cheat your way around it.
You all are too funny. I didn't ask anything about smog nor could I care less about CA smog. I have 2 options; 1. Swap the cats back on every 2 years. or 2. Don't drive the car on CA streets and use the vehicle as a OHV Off-Highway Vehicle.
Now lets get back to the original topic and stop the CA smog debate.
I've seen same make/model vehicles in Europe using the same oem exhaust system with higher HP simply due to no cats, but haven't seen anything in regards to torque? Now correct me if I'm wrong, I would think simply removing the cats while keeping the rest of the exhaust system intact, would yield a few extra horsepower.
Has anyone ever dynoed cats vs no cats on stock mufflers?
Easy there with the name calling. It has nothing to do with treehugging. Just because you know others that will pass it illegally, it won't make it legal.
Talk about a thread spinning off topic...
What say we return to the OP's question and leave the questions about CA emissions to another thread that anyone interested is free to start.
BS. I don't live in CA, but common sense says this is incorrect. Used cars is my job. Cats get old and fail all the time. They need to be replaced in order to pass. The replacement is always an aftermarket cat. I have to deal with this several times a month. I save the old cats and stack them on a shelf. Every couple of months I take them and cash them in a the scrap yard. I get three grand a year from used cats. Your local muffler shop carries various sizes of replacement cats. None of them are factory. If someone wants to cheat the system, you can simply cut the cats in half and weld them back together with a piece of pipe through the middle. We used to do it all the time. Visually they look perfect. The car will still blow pretty clean without them. I did that in Denver and passed.
I vote for doing what everybody else does and swap the cats back every 2 years
Also, I would imagine that it would be very close, if not gaining a few horsepower since your "almost stock" Fister D mufflers should provide enough back pressure to prevent hp loss. With my NSX I'm running with no cats and a full exhaust/muffler (not stock), and it dyno'd a few hp higher, but the gain is marginal at best. It does however "feel" faster, and does give it a nice aggressive sound, and the weight savings of course.....
Hey secret agent, its Alex from Fabspeed. Thanks to everyone out there using the Fabspeed product, hope your enjoying everything. If you are looking to improve the power and sound of your 996 without making it too loud, the X Pipe Sport Cats will do a great job. They will make a noticeable 10-14+ HP that you can feel, in addition to a more sporty and unique sound due to the X Pipe. It also allows the exhaust gases to balance each other out for improved flow balance and increased power over regular crossover pipes. Cross over pipes work nice also, but they don't make the same HP increase and sound louder then the X Pipe setup.
Our 200 Cell sport cats will pass the actual CA emissions testing but they are not Carb-Certified so most emissions stations will give you a hard time about it. At that point, you just need to find a local shop that is a little more easy going about certain performance upgrades. But we do state our Sport Cats and Catbypass Pipes are for Off Road use, so its up to you to make the right decision as what is right for your car.

Thanks,
The only illegal thing going on is the Tyrannical Government that has brainwashed you so much that you have an instilled fear if you even cross the road without looking..
The Government is supposed to do the peoples will,
NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND
People are getting too scared to try anything,
Ill add in case this point arises further down the thread, Cars do not add to Global warming and all that ****e,
Its the Grazing and Pasture industry that account for over 80% of pollution, Automobile industry accounts to only around 3 to 5% but that's a fact the Government doesn't want people to know because they like their steak and will never give that up.
Drive the her like you stole it !
If removing cats improve power im doing it so im watching this thread with loads of interest.
And F K U C the Governments ALL Governments they are all Treachorous slaves that have sold us out the bankers and Corporation,
,
I am so glad you are watching this thread from 2012, lets us know how it works out for you...as far as your views on government, i now where you can get a good deal on tin foil
Ibtl!
So before this gets locked I'll add $0.02
If a cat converter does not have a CARB EO# stamped on it, it's illegal in CA and a few other states (should be around 13 states by the end of 2016)
Aftermarket cats will usually pass a sniffer test but won't pass a visual one.
To those who care about air quality and still want to enjoy the car I applaud you. I am an asthmatic in LA and we can use all the help we can get. It's not about big government, it's about being able to breathe.
Back to the op's topic
A reduction in back pressure doesn't cause a loss of torque, it causes the torque peak to move higher in the rpm range. This can be helped with a change in ignition timing during tuning.
