Went to local car toys and they replaced speaker for ~$300.

Suggestion
If the issue is in all speakers, then the problem is most likely in the head unit or amp -- both are easy and cheap to replace buying replacements on eBay.

Suggestion
In other words, I plan on replacing the entire system (Speakers, AMP, HU & radio wiring harness) because I have MOST.
Replace entire unit just speakers or hu whichever is broke

I believe pre-2003 you will not need to replace entire unit just speakers or HU whichever is broke.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Suggestion
You will get a sound upgrade replacing the speakers and modernization (bluetooth) upgrade when you replace the head unit, so it shouldn't be a big deal regardless of what is broken.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

$2k to replace entire system with a great system. Which is what you will end up doing if you like music and todays technology. Upgrading Bose or replacing speakers is futile. In other words, I plan on replacing the entire system (Speakers, AMP, HU & radio wiring harness) because I have MOST. What year was the 996 you were having a PPI on? I believe pre-2003 you will not need to replace entire unit just speakers or HU whichever is broke.
It depends. Speakers are the most likely culprit, but it could also be the HU or Amp (if it has one) has gone bad.
I wouldn't turn a car I otherwise liked down just because of an issue with the factory system (a custom system is a different story as that could be a mess). Just enjoy the sound of the flat 6 with the radio off until you figure out what you want to do
If the car has PSE or aftermarket exhaust the sound from the flat 6 is much more enjoyable than any other music anyhow (IMO). You'll most likely need to invest in a good radar detector though.
Same here. I accidentally hit the power button on mine this morning while I was messing with something while still parked in my garage. I guess that I had the volume level up pretty high the last time that I used it. It caused me to jump in my seat. lol
I have a '99 - no bose. I changed out the speakers, amp and head unit. I enjoy listening to music while in traffic and the bluetooth is great for the phone. When I go for a 'drive' I usually just enjoy the sound of the car. I also changed out a friends head unit, and in both cases the am reception was worse than the stock cdr-220. I've tried a few fixes but unless it's body grounding somewhere I cant find, the stock radio has much better reception.
Its fairly easy to replace the components and you can spend as little or as much as you want, but what you can do depends on wether you have bose/most.
The speakers are the weakest link in the OEM system. Because they suck. If you enjoy listening to music over the sound of your Flat 6, then it's a good bang for your buck IMHO.
Upgrading the entire system (Double Din head unit, amp, sub and speakers) also gives you all of the modern conveniences like nav, Bluetooth, etc, and several companies offer custom bezels and harnesses that make the conversion easy and look good as well.
why why why does it always have to be a $2k upgrade to the car stereo?
If the speakers are blown, its does not cost a lot to replace them.
There is a good DIY on 986forum.com
Maybe my ears suck or my standards are low, but the system in my car isn't all that bad. Sure it's not great, but could be a lot worse. Speakers are cheap, and that would be the last thing on my mind if/when buying one of these.
+1, my GT2 has the base 4 speaker system and it's not bad, dad's 6TT has the Bose and has more bass/depth but not really that much better overall.
Thinking about doing a classy HU and speaker upgrade in the GT2 to gain aux-in, and better speakers to add a little more depth; cheap and fully reversible.
It seems pretty unlikely that all of the speakers are blown out simultaneously...
If you're hearing anything at all from the speakers, they're working. Could be nothing worse than a loose wiring harness.
I'll look into it and my Bose system in my CTT isn't bad at all but no BT Etc. My goal is moving the AC controls for a double DIN apple car display and that's it. Maybe speakers, but more **** for thieves to eyeball. The exhaust will be my main thing to drool over as many people have already pointed out. The cat back Eisenmann I had in my M5 was to die for. I just wonder how the radio got so ****ed up? I do listen to NPR.
Use the balance/fader to test each speaker separately. If the issue is in all speakers, then the problem is most likely in the head unit or amp -- both are easy and cheap to replace buying replacements on eBay. It could be wiring also.
If it turns out to be the speakers, then it's also cheap. A popular option are to replace the four speakers (dash & rear) with Alpine SPS-410, which are about $50 a pair. The door speakers (woofers) are actually pretty good in my experience, so I wouldn't replace them unless they are bad.
You will get a sound upgrade replacing the speakers and modernization (bluetooth) upgrade when you replace the head unit, so it shouldn't be a big deal regardless of what is broken.
What year is the car?
2004. You couldn't pay me enough to drive a goddamn Prius POS. I'm gonna have a 996 for less than half the price of the FIRST Prius my brother bought and proclaimed himself a genius at 145/bbl oil.
Heh. If you don't want to pay for the Prius, I believe they will give you one as thanks for your NPR contribution of $25,000 or more.
996 drivers are saving the planet driving 15-year-old cars that are NOT stuffed full of rare earth minerals, cadmium, arsenic, and lithium...
Agree 100%. We own a chunk of a battery company that makes zinc silver batteries, maybe that's why he wants a car full of the things! Tired of electronic cars in general....ie NAV etc.
Damn speaker bearings...
PS: OEM base level speakers are extremely mediocre quality paper cone foam surround all-range drivers.
This was my solution... Modified some Polk Audio plate speakers to mount on the factory grill mounts.
If you have snap, crackle and pop, more than likely the final amp has been overloaded and the power section is blown. I've seen lots of them like that. Once that goes, the speakers which are simple mechanical solenoids don't last long afterward. The head is prolly ok because it doesn't do any of the heavy lifting of the audio, just a tuner, CD player combo. Try swapping in some temp speakers and let it warm up well, then run it at modest volume for a bit and see if it pops. If so, the amp needs to go, and so do the speakers. If it doesn't keep popping with the temp speakers then you can get away with just that being replaced. Lots of options on amp and speakers, I won't give any advice there.
