When I searched for a fix it appears most people fixed it with replacing the valves, but it didnt work for him.

The purge valve was replaced according to the dealer, but will try putting my finger over the vent.

So far he has replaced all the valves and it was recommended that he replace the DME which he did and it is still there.

The one on my 2002 Boxster was not leaking but when the tether broke and I replaced the old cap with a new one I noticed the old cap's sealing was dry and cracked and could develop a leak sooner rather than later.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My Dad has an 03 996 and sometimes the gas tank makes a howling noise from the filler neck which you can hear from inside the car. So far he has replaced all the valves and it was recommended that he replace the DME which he did and it is still there. It appears it only does it when it is either idling or very light on the throttle. When I searched for a fix it appears most people fixed it with replacing the valves, but it didnt work for him. Does anybody have a fix for this? Thanks

What about the gas cap? The one on my 2002 Boxster was not leaking but when the tether broke and I replaced the old cap with a new one I noticed the old cap's sealing was dry and cracked and could develop a leak sooner rather than later. However I would think if the cap was leaking enough to cause noise the CEL would be on. In fact if anything related to the gas tank and the vapor recovery system as bad enough to generate noise I would expect a CEL. Are you sure the noise is from the filler neck area? The noise can instead be a radiator fan motor or even an issue from the A/C system.

POST 3Original post

What "valves" did he replace? The purge valve at the throttle body is often the culprit for the squeal, hoot, moan, howl. When it does this put your finger over the small rubber vent in the fuel filler well. If you can stop the sound by covering that vent you are pulling vacuum, which the purge valve controls, from the engine.

+996 It's almost always the purge valve that is at fault. If you open the full door and to the right side of where the fuel lid is there is an opening with a plastic grommet. If you stick your finger in there does the noise stop? If it does this is a good indication that it's the purge valve - HERE .

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Tried the gas cap, but the noise is still the same with it off (it just gets louder). The purge valve was replaced according to the dealer, but will try putting my finger over the vent.
