Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The mechanic suggests it could be a transmission bearing that is noisy with the clean fluid.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
I am in South Africa, and having recently purchased a 1998 996 tiptronic with 92 000 km (60 000 miles), i was anxious re the IMS issue. Imported a vertex fix kit and fitted it together with doing a transmission flush and change of filter.
Turns out the old bearing was perfect, looked like new, but peace of mind now.
Since then the car has a whining sound in neutral when stationary or in gear and moving. the sound rises with engine rpm.
What could this be?
The mechanic suggests it could be a transmission bearing that is noisy with the clean fluid. (suggested the old fluid may have been damping the whine)
I am wondering if it could be a result of the IMS bearing fix.
Anyone have any definitive ideas?
I hear all sorts of noises when I drive my car. My 996 manual would whine at certain rpms in certain gears...my 997S with tip did so as well...and now my new to me 996 3.4 with tip does. I usually notice it in slow traffic when slogging along. At highway speeds or under acceleration or most of the other times I never hear it. The dealer I bought it from did a complete fluids check on everything, I feel no vibrations or complaints from the drive train. But I also expect a certain amount of noise from a car built 17 years ago. As I've often been advised here, just drive it.
Thank you for the responses.
i dropped off the car with my Indie 2 days ago.
My first question to the technician was if he had filled enough fluid.
I will ask him to top it up in the morning and see whats the outcome.
thanks and regards
I agree that it could be a low fluid level. The bad part about that is that if you drove it, it can damage components if under filled. But many times filling it to the correct level will solve the problem.
It could also be that the filter is not properly seated. I have a lot of experience with Audi gearboxes, but none with Porsche's. Here is a detailed procedure on how to drain and fill on an Audi, should be about the same on the 996.
