POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am on the verge of buying this rear spoiler. Looks like a Misha gt2 spoiler but the wing holders are somehow too big (wider than how the misa looks in photos). Does anyone know this style? Would be interesting to know. Thanks guys in advance

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 19630771

this is a photo of my Misha GT2 base

POST 4Original post

Yes, looking at mine, I walk back my comment, too. The real GT3 pillars are narrower and the gap between the two vents is much narrower than the one you have. That looks like a third-party creation.

POST 5Original post

Definitely not a GT3 nor Aerokit clone, at least not a close one. I wouldn't purchase unless a matching wing blade comes with it, or you know the manufacture and a wing is available.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19631050

Thanks guys. Really different to anything I have ever seen. It comes with a carbon wing. Not sure if I should pull the plug. I found one that fits in the original wing area on ebay for 350 which is a little cheaper than this option. Not sure about the quality of either. The ebay uk one looks like this which I really like (credits to the owner of the photo): Hard decisions...

POST 7Original post

You can never have too many rear decks. 4 bolts and an electrical connector and you can change the looks of your 996. Swap them daily if you want. I have three(factory Carrera, Taco, and GT3RS) but I have never gone back to the previous decks. But I can easily if I wish. (I have been considering going back to the Carrera just for a temporary change)

Hahahhaah good that the wifey didn't read this post 🤣🤣🤣 but you give me good ideas. Thanks, man 👌😁 If possible would be cool if you could share photos of your car with the different styles. For motivation purposes 😎

POST 9Original post

Carrera: Taco: GT3RS: Of course there are other differences that happened in between and after the wing changes. Sideskirts, wheels, rollbar, coilovers, etc. My car is even lower now, which changes how it looks as well. Also it has been unstickered except for a Flat6Innovations and 4.0 decals. All three decks have fans installed on them. The Carrera deck has it's wiring harness still installed on it. The Taco & GT3RS share the same fixed-wing harness which prevents error indicating Carrera motorized wing is not responding. 5 bolts afix the rear deck, and the wiring harness has to move between fixed wing decks (disconnected from Fan) or the plug from the chassis to the rear deck needs to be unplugged. They are all light enough that 2 people can easily swap them. Hold one side with 1 hand and installing bolts with the other hand. Note, not all decks are made to the same quality, so some bodywork may be required to make the deck fit properly.

POST 10Original post

In case you don't have sideskirts, here's what a Taco looks like without:

POST 11Original post

Tex, love that you can assessorize your 996 for every day of the week.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 19633120

HA! Can, but don't. I have considered taking my Carrera deck along to the Texas Mile to see if less drag from the GT3RS wing will allow for a higher top speed. I could run both up & down to see if that matters too. That's one reason why I'm thinking about swapping, to see how the car feels at more "normal" speeds (imbalance by front splitter & no rear spoiler) before attempting a full mile top speed run.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 19632977

That is an aftermarket bumper and a GT2 style wing. I am assuming the wing and deck are probably aftermarket as well, but there is no way to tell from a simple picture. If you add a wing you should add a front spoiler. Not for looks, but to counterbalance the rear wing's downforce. The last thing a 996 needs is a light front end at speed (or wet roads).

POST 14Original post

Aero on the 996 is one of those things that I visually appreciate because you can really dress up or dress down the car. From a handling standpoint on the track, I never wanted it because I had my 996 set-up nailed for mechanical grip. From 130 to 145 at road america on the straights I always wondered if i would benefit from aero, but figured I would loose some top end speed. But have no way to confirm one way or the other. Maybe you can be the guy to confirm?!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 19633172

If you dont mind me asking, what is your setup for mechanical grip?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 19633172

I'd be shocked if the big wing didn't slow me down at least a little.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19633612

On my 996.2 I run 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 with RE71RS currently or if i can find someone to bring my extra set of wheels, ill run Hoosiers. Prefer Hoosiers for grip but I drive the car to the track. Gt3 height and specs. I will get more aggressive with camber on Hoosiers. But camber is a double edged sword on the street. Guard LSD and Brembo GT Big brake kit 355 F and 345 R both provide incredible stability thru braking and turn in. LSD obviously when getting on the power. All leads to more stability and makes the car easier to balance. I have Bilstein PSS9s set to full stuff in the rear and half stiff in the front. Tarret sway bars and drop links set to tightest in the rear and softest in the front. This set up has pretty much elimated understeer and provides great turn in, but the back end is firmly planted. I can confidently address carousels, sweepers, dog legs, kinks, chcanes, etc. What this means is that my car does not go from understeer to oversteer and back again like a pendulum, which seems to be a common trait for some set ups. It's stable at speed amd in different conditions. However, its stiff as he'll on the street, but I like it. No aero which means no adjustments needed to balance out the set up. Someday maybe. But I dread having to dial it in again. Eventually I will replace my coilovers and I dread that as well.

POST 18Original post

Thank you for sharing! It gives me a lot to think about. Im glad to hear youve got it dialed-in well. Are you fully happy with the setup? Not much, if any, room for improvement?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 19635245

Yeah, I have been very happy with the set-up. It's like driving a go-kart on the street and extremely consistent and dependable on the track. I am blown away at how durable the PSS9s have been. Not one leak in over 15 years and I can still put down the same lap times without having to over drive the car. From an improvement standpoint, new coilovers sometime in the next year or two for a refresh, but not certain which ones. Very happy with the PSS system and may just get a new set because i know the settings and characteristics, but I have never driven a 996 with Ohlins, MCS or KWs to compare and contrast the differences. MCS seems to be the new hot ticket right now for the track with a great product line and customer service. I'll save the aero and bigger wheels for after I do an elective engine rebuild in the next few years. No reason to slow the car down before i boost the power by 80 hp/tq. With all this being said, the easiest and cheapest enhancement anyone can make to improve their handling and grip is a good set of sticky tires with stiff sidewalls. Love to hear about your set-up.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19633052

Wow man, ur car is really spoiled (no pun intended). My car would be envious . Thanks for sharing the photos, I really appreciated. I plan on dressing the car with the 997 gt3 front and 4s 996 rear so I am kind of thinking which spoiler would match that setup. I know is kind of crazy but I want to make like the ultimate 911 for me, like the car with all the things I like the most of all generations and making it work aestetically. It will take a long time though as there are some mechanical stuff I need to solve but I am collecting stuff step by step and looking out for good prices. I will try to buy the spoiler, you gave me all the right reasons. btw nice mustang. I liked em.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 19633678

Bump Im surprised your back end is firmly planted with your rear settings adjusted stiffly. I would have thought itd be an oversteery mess. Maybe your 285 rear tires are holding the rear end stable? My 996.1s setup is completely stock US M030 (springs, dampers, sways). My front tires are 225/40/18, and the rears are 265/35/18, but they are 560tw all-seasons. My suspension doesnt feel taut anymore, so Im getting ready to replace it. Ill probably replace the control arms while Im at it, because I have a feeling the rubber bushings arent doing so well either. I definitely feel the understeer-to-oversteer pendulum effect. Its a bit unnerving when it happens. When you drive on the street, do you find that your grip is reduced from being too stiff? Im guessing youre using the supplied springs from the PSS9s? When you do replace your coilovers, are you planning on sticking with the PSS9s, or will you try something else?

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 19689174

Yeah, my set-up is firmly planted on the street and track. I haven't found a bump or situation that disturbs the car in a high speed or slow speed situation. Whatever Bilstein did with their PSS9/10 design, it works. For sure, a Guard LSD, Tarret sway bars and drop links, great tires at the proper sizes and tire pressures also helps. Per your question, I have been extremely happy with the PSS9s over the past 17 years. They continue to perform very well on the track and street. Never had a leak nor a problem with them. Just set then up and forget about them. So unless I can find a compelling reason to spend $4500 on a different brand of coilover versus a new set of Bilstein PSS10s for $2800, I will buy a new set of PSS10s. To me, the design, performance and durability are proven. But who knows, maybe I will get a chance to test out another more expensive brand on a 996 and be blown away by it.

POST 23Original post

That makes sense. Im surprised at the longevity of your PSS9s. You could probably send them in for a rebuild and be better off financially. What are your alignment settings? Do you change your alignment for the street vs track?

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 19691575

I will probably pick up a new set of PSS10s and get the PSS9s rebuilt to sit on the shelf as a just in case. I am not at home to check the numbers but it is set up to GT3 specs. I typically don't rotate the specs, but have made changes from time to time with front camber if I am planning a long distance trip I will take off some camber. Problem with aggressive camber on the street is it chews up the inside of tires and the front end will tramline the road. Conversely, it helps on the track.

POST 25Original post

Thats a good observation about the camber. Ill occasionally tramline while driving along certain roads, and it catches me by surprise. I want to eliminate that, so I hope you wont forget to share your alignment specs when you get home. Have you given thought to switching up the spring rates? Or maybe youd leave it alone, because it really seems you have everything dialed-in perfectly.

POST 26Original post

Once a year I make a long distance drive round trip from Chicago to Phila to visit family. I usually run -1.5 F and -2 R for camber. The rest of the year I usually run -2 front and back. Which allows me to drive to and from the track without chewing up the tires before I get there. I got more aggressive with camber in past years when I was running hoosiers doing anything i could to shave off time. But i was going through tires and brakes like they were candy. Now I go to the track to exercise the 996, maintain driving skills and hang with the guys. Still pay attention to times, but after 20 years of doing it, i know what the car can do on the edge. I stay slightly inside the edge today.

POST 27Original post

Thanks man, you have been very helpful throughout this enlightening conversation. Im going to try -1.5F/-2.0R camber and see how i like it. Im happy to hear that youve been doing this in the same car for 20 years. You must share a qualitative relationship with your 996.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 19692744

Hah! I have grown very attached to it since buying it in 2002. Been alot of fun making it better, faster and stronger over the years. But the most fun is just enjoying it on the track and street. Incredible machine if you take care of it.

POST 29Original post

Are you its first owner?? im in agreement about the joyfulness in driving. I look forward to growing with my car like you did to yours.

POST 30Original post

I am the second owner. Bought it 6 months old from the local Porsche dealership in December 2002. Original owner would buy a new Porsche every 6 months. I had been looking at 964s, 993, 996.1s and 996.2s. Got the call from the dealership telling me the car will be available shortly, went in to see it, handled beautifully, servicing history was good, got an extended warranty and never looked back.

POST 31Original post

Haha, lucky you. I imagine your purchase price was lower than brand-new due to immediate depreciation? Switching cars every 6 months seems a bit excessive. I wonder if hes still doing that to this day, lol.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 19692849

Yeah, I paid 65k for it which was a substantial discount to new at the time. We all know what they are worth today. But no question, I would still do it all over again. I have had too much fun with it over the years. Believe it or not, it was even fun solving for the M96 issues. I was very lucky to have a great network here that actively raced, tracked and supported the M96 since the beginning. So we could all compare notes. What you figure out us that there is nothing wrong with the M96 as an engine. What's wrong is a few bolt on parts that are sub par such as the oem IMSB, AOS, and water pump, and they can easily be solved for. You also figure out that if you are going to track the car, you gotta properly prepare the car for oil starvation, oil pressure and cooling. Lastly, you figure out that you better run the best damn oil in the engine and change it very often to keep it fresh.

POST 33Original post

While I largely agree with your sentiment about the problems being limited to bolt-on parts, theres the bore score problem. I personally think that too many shortcuts (or poor foresight) were taken during the design phase of this car and it takes its toll as the car ages. The fact that there are so many aftermarket parts to address these pitfalls shows (to me) that it was flawed from the get-go. however, I also really do like the M96. Its a very fun engine when taken to 7000 rpm, and I think its well-worth the dedication to bulletproof. Im also very pleased to see great aftermarket support for this car. From those engine bolt-on solutions to suspension mods, there is a variety of quality parts that elevate this car beyond what the engineers designed for. Maybe Im being too hard on this car, and expecting too much because its a Porsche. Many other cars have issues, like E36s and E46s with their rear subframes and GR86s with their oil starvation problems. In the grand scheme, its probably on par with the other cars.

POST 34Original post

I hear you. The 996 is in good company with the 986, 987, 997 all suffering from the same bolt on part issues, oil starvation issues on the track, etc. All pretty much have the same preventative fixes. Regarding bore scoring, it's a byprpduct of German politics to solve the global warming issue. They needed a different way to make cylinders by law. Here is the funny thing, it's also effecting every other Porsche mmodel.its not isolated to only the 996. The question is whether it's a cylinder coating issue or a piston coating iissue? Or both? Pay attention to those questions because the answers may come to us as more 991s and 992 get it. Right now, i dont have any bore scoring in my 3.6 engine. But yet, I have over 90-100 track days. Why not? Because I ran great oil and have had over 100 oil changes since 2002. Most important rule is to always run great oil and change it frequently. It solves for alot of issues.

POST 35Original post

Huh.. I didnt know that about the cylinder manufacturing law. I havent paid much attention to the 991s and 992s, but thats a good idea that Ill be implementing. Youre spot on about oil changes. A lot of people listen to the dealers about 10k mile oil changes and wonder why their engine is toast after 50k miles. This phenomenon occurs across all car brands, too. One of the most eye-opening things Ive learned since my introduction to the M96 was Jake Rabys comment about how the engine oil is in use even while the car is sitting for extended periods. I really need to get around to changing the oil on my other parked cars.
