This is not a probability of success.

During install of the numeric, I also replaced a plastic cable end that attaches the fore-aft cable to the shift lever.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have the 997gt3 short shifter in my 996 but early this year I bought a 99 Boxster with a rifle action short shifter its a little chunky but I love it so Im in the mood to upgrade my 996 again and Im looking for your opinion on long term use

POST 2Original post

I've had my short shifter in for about 3 months. I was coming from the mushy stock 996 shifter. It has completely changed the car. Its crisp and feels solid. 10/10

POST 3Original post

I have a numeric short shifter, installed in the tallest position (longest throw) because I wanted precision shifts, not a short throw. I remembered upon installation that the shift effort felt a bit more difficult than Id prefer. I was even partially regretting its purchase. But now the shift effort seems to have been lessened, either because its been broken in a little, or Ive simply gotten used to it. While driving yesterday, I even remember explicitly thinking this is a nice shifter. I also previously had the Function First solid cable ends installed. That made a small, but noticeable difference with my OEM 996 shifter. During install of the numeric, I also replaced a plastic cable end that attaches the fore-aft cable to the shift lever. I figured the old one was probably beat-up and could do with replacement. The numeric shifter I received was a newer version, with a centering spring installed. I left it in place upon installation, and I can say I really like it. The centering action is strong enough to avoid mis-shifting, which makes shifting diagonally a pleasant experience. I have a short shifter in my Honda, and after all this - sorry to say - my shifting experience in the 996 still falls a bit short in comparison. Im starting to think the difference lies with the dual mass flywheel of the 996
