Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2000 996 has ~9200 miles on it. For the last 3-4000 miles, the brakes have been squeeking. The squeeking will go away temporarily (15-20 miles) if I spray the wheels down (recommended by the Porsche dealer in Palo Alto). I can't believe this is normal. How long do these brakes usually last anyway, under medium driving in 20% stop and go traffic?
If by spraying you mean water, I've also heard this from several sources including other people on the board. If you're getting squealing from brake-dust spraying water into the wheel wells can clear out the dust build up. Make sure though to dry out your brakes soon afterwards by doing a couple of quick stops so that you don't get any rust on your rotors. I have also heard that there is something you can spray onto the brakes (?) to cut down on squeal though I don't know what the consensus is on using this stuff. Sounds like the dealer you recommended this DOES know what he's talking about.
Forgot to mention I have started to clean out my brakes and rotors with water each time I wash my car and it has temporarily cut down on brake squeal. You might also want to check that your brake rotors don't have a lip on them. You can feel this by running a finger from the center of the rotor to the edge. This can cause pretty severe squeal as well and sometimes can be solved by refinishing the rotors.
there used to be a paste (that i can't find anymore) that you dab on your finger tip and wipe it across your rotors to stop squealing. worked pretty good. this is not the same as the Stop Squeal adhesive that you use on the back of the pads.
but then i do have a slight lip on my rotors and my brakes squeal pretty bad once warmed up...
