Never understood why people installed aftermarket intakes.
Leading evidence: 'Install aftermarket intakes' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'loss of power' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install aftermarket intakes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

After Jakes class I bought a used 3.8 box off ebay and replaced the K&N.

Since Dyno results and low speeds are not important to me, I prefer the more open look and sound of my Custom CIA with the Sound Symposer Retrofitted.( yes I use stock unmodified mufflers)..YMMV...

Suspected cause
There are zero advantages and probably a loss of power with aftermarket.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My car came with the K&N intake assembly when I bought it.....I ended up buying a stock airbox a few weeks ago on ebay for $45 shipped. There is no doubt about it, the ability of the K&N to suck in cold air from the outside is absolutely no comparison to the stock airbox. The stock airbox is better for a cold air intake. I didn't do pressure drop testing, but my guess is that the stock airbox has a higher pressure drop for the same flow as compared to the K&N.
I have a Fister exhaust, I cannot hear any difference in noise in the engine noises with the K&N gone. Random picture showing the K&N from when I was working on the car a few weeks ago.
Hi Paul, my car also came with a K&N cold air intake of which I am skeptical of the performance gains.
I'm also worried about how it affects performance in the rain because it has less ability to remove moisture from the air going into the engine than the stock airbox as water basically drops straight onto it and through the single layer of paper.
It's one of the corrections I want to make in the future.
So just to clarify - you're saying the stock box is better?
i know Jake has said his experience is the best intake available is the factory box (for the 3.8 I believe).
Cheers
Charlie
I think the stock air box is a better design than the k&n. The k&n might be better at some specific rpm ranges under certain conditions but for my purposes I'd rather have the stock air box.
Just got done pulling off my Fabspeed intake and putting the stock one back on. The Fabspeed won't pass CA smog inspection and I wasn't into switching it back and forth to pass. While I lost a little intake noise going back to stock it really looks like a much better setup for cold air getting to the motor. Guess I have a Fabspeed for sale!
I currently have a vflow intake from Evolution Motorsports (previous owner installed it). It looks like a smarter design that the ones pictured above that feature only a cone. But I'm still thinking about going back to stock.
I did the same thing...actually the first thing I did when I got my car...got rid of the PO's Evolution intake and put in a stock airbox. Zero performance difference noted...Just way less dirt getting sucked into the intake. I hate those "cold air" intakes....They should call them "GDTB intakes" for

Never understood why people installed aftermarket intakes. Porsche designed the air intake correctly. There are zero advantages and probably a loss of power with aftermarket.
I would trade my factory air box for a K&N if anyone wants to go back to original. I have 2 1999 996's one has a custom CAI that I designed that also has a retrofitted Sound Symposer from a 991 on it that is much cooler than the factory air box. I would like to try the K&N to see how it compares. While driving the other night in my 1999 Cab with factory air box the ambient temp was 75f and intake temp was 115-118f at 60 mph. Yesterday on my 1999 Coupe with my custom CAI at 60 mph and ambient temp at 80f the intake temp was 99f, much cooler than the factory box tha'ts on my CAB, so I want to see what a K&N will do before I put my custom design on it as well.
Mine came with K&N as well.
After Jakes class I bought a used 3.8 box off ebay and replaced the K&N.
I miss the intake noise, but no doubt the genuine porsche box is more effective at being a filter.
Skip did you ever test this? My car came with the k&n installed. I have the CARB number so not worried about smog. I am considering changing back to the stock box.
Yes I did, the big difference is the temps below 40mph, and above 40mph, AND how much time you spend at those speeds.
The K&N and most aftermarket CIA's will not perform well on the Dyno, the ambient air off the exhaust will rise up to effect the intake air temp.
At speeds above 40mph the ambient air is moving downward from the rear spoiler and pushes all the air out the bottom of the car, this makes even the aftermarket CIA's intake air cool to within 1 degree of ambient temp.
The factory air box is all plastic, and once all the plastic gets heat soaked to 150F by idling or driving in stop and go traffic, the heat soaked plastic warms the air going through the air box for a long time even after the speed is up above 40mph, but within a few minutes will cool off to near ambient temp.
I find the aftermarket CIA's during idle and stop and go traffic, to pull in more warm air sooner as has been reported by Jake and others, but once moving above 40mph the CIA's will cool off faster and the intake air will be near ambient temp sooner.
Theses tests/observations were done during normal driving( ie minimal intake air flowing through the intake, )..Under aggressive driving ( ie more air going through the intake) I expect the difference to be even less.
Basically the plastic air box with all the plastic in close proximity of air flow is both an insolater and a heat radiator at times.
Dyno tests of intakes should probably be done in a wind tunnel for accuaracy..Dyno Testing while stationery can't capture the whole air temp picture.
So all in all, the difference at low speeds below 40 mph can be huge at times, giving the advantage to stock air box, the difference above 40mph is practically the same after a few minutes...
Since Dyno results and low speeds are not important to me, I prefer the more open look and sound of my Custom CIA with the Sound Symposer Retrofitted.( yes I use stock unmodified mufflers)..YMMV...
One thing no one mentions is that the K&N will let larger particles through than the stock filter. For normal street use that alone makes me always use the stock air filter. Imagine what those larger particles will do to the engine over time.
This is true especially if you drive on dirt roads but can be splitting hairs, remember Marine engines don't use ANY air filter and last a long long time...,
My Dual Cone K&N filter has been on for 80K miles and filters better than ever and has never been cleaned...
Bill here is a couple pics of the "Banshee" CIA I built a few of back in 2011. It incorporates the Sound Symposer from the 991. One pic with the Lexan heat shield and one pic with the Aluminum heat shield. these are not my car but rather a couple of local friends ( mine has the Lexan heat shield.)
Incorporating the 991 Sound Symposer was very difficult to place in the rear "hat rack". The sound to me is lovely and the reason I kept the stock mufflers unmodified, so I can fully enjoy the sound.
A lot people then as well as now have some notion that a modified Intake sound is somehow "fake" yet while a modified exhaust sound is somehow "real"..SMFH LMAOO

The difference in horsepower on a 996 from 60F to 80F air temp is 6.6HP......
