Id think most owners or dealers wouldnt have an issue with you checking the fitment of a car seat but Id try to find one that you might actually be interested in purchasing.

Be conscious of the fact that it could be more or less than 5k depending on what service and parts have been replaced prior to your ownership.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

For Costco or Large grocery store runs (1-2 twice a month), I would probably use my wife's car since she only commutes to her office downtown at most twice a week.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive got the itch to make a 996 my daily driver. Would like to rent or test drive one first. Got two kids and want to make sure their Diono 3RTX fit in the back and that I like the car. Looking at mostly Carrera or maybe a Targa. Trying to keep it under 37k all in. Im in Baltimore, MD.
places like Theo and DriveShre dont have any 996 generation.
I was in a similar boat a while back. Id think most owners or dealers wouldnt have an issue with you checking the fitment of a car seat but Id try to find one that you might actually be interested in purchasing. if your car seat wont fit, this will.

Your budget sounds about right, just make sure you allocate $6k if it needs an IMS bearing, AOS, water pump, etc. Its hard to find fully sorted cars these days. And do not forego an invasive PPI, including bore scoping. Good luck.
thanks. Im keeping an eye on BaT and Cars&Bids for something local. Also have alerts on AutoTempest.
FIL (big into Porsche racing PCA events with his GT4) says I should get a newer car but those go into the high 40s and 50s to start.
The plan is to sell the Accord for about 27k plus the proceeds from my classic Mini (15k) is 42k. Want to leave 5k after tags and tax for 1st year maintenance issues.
I echo elwood's thoughts. Be conscious of the fact that it could be more or less than 5k depending on what service and parts have been replaced prior to your ownership.
yeah, low 30s would be the sweet spot. Or just chill in the Accord for another 1-2 years and spend 50k. But the worry is that in 2 years 50k still only gets me a 996.
I think your plan is solid. If you can find something with less than say 50-60k miles, the suspension should be good for a while longer leaving you with a decent budget if you need to do the IMS, AOS, clutch, and water pump. I bought mine with 74k miles so I factored in a suspension refresh as well.
IMO, youre not buying any more performance or reliability with a 997. Its more cosmetics and a much nicer interior.
“ IMO, you’re not buying any more performance or reliability with a 997. It’s more cosmetics and a much nicer interior. ”
Be sure to get a 996 with “full leather” interior and you won’t have to worry about ^^^ that😉
You will be fine if you buy right. In year one, don't worry about suspension, interior or exterior items. Just worry about service and parts to create dependability and durability with your engine. Plenty of time for the other things. If you do the right things to protect the engine, you will have a very dependable daily driver.
re-read what Elwood said. Add to it that you want service records. And you will know exactly what has been serviced, replaced and when.
My four year old loves riding in the back.
He got car-sick the other day and put the fear of God in my eyes. I've never pulled over and evacuated him from the car so fast.... Fortunately we made it to a curb before his incident.
But yeah... Beware.
The 996 is a great daily driver.
My son (17 at the time of purchase) never fit in the back seat.
My daughter was 10 and she fit just fine.
But my daughter outgrew my back seat when she was 13.
She’s currently only 5’1” and light as a feather.
So tall kids won’t be comfortable.
That’s when I installed my rollbar and eliminated the back seat.
The minivan or Mustang is for trips with more than 1 passenger.
It may make sense to stick with your Honda. Safer for kids. You may have unrealistic expectations across the board. If you are that concerned about costs, then you should wait.
I think a Honda Accord is much more suited for a Dad with young kids.
Can a 996 be used? Sure!
Is a 4-door Honda Accord a better choice? Most likely, yes.
My kids are older(15 & 22) and I have other options for transportation.
I drove crappy boring cars(Toyota Corolla, Toyota Avalon, Ford Crown Victoria, P71) until my kids(and I) were older.
Drive the Honda Accord, and save your money...the Porsche can always come later.
Yeah, from the time my kids were out of the car seats, they sat in the back seat of my 996 until they got to be too big to fit. Agree with you. We had our Q7 we used for everyday transportion like your suburban.
Hey All,
Thanks for the feedback. There is a dealer about 20 minutes north of me with a 996 Targa. Might take the kids and seats to see how it fits. I'll make sure to call ahead to let them know what I want to try. The car itself is well outside my price range (i think listed at $55k w/ 30k miles)
It will probably be terrible for a daily routine, but I'll see how it fits. The Targa could make the rear storage area slightly more useful.
Even if i do sell the Accord we will still have a 2017 Clubman that has plenty of room for kids and stuff, so that helps.
All that being said, the plan will likely to sit in the Accord for another 12-36 months. Then both kids will be out of 5 point kid seats and just in booster seats. There is an E46 Touring on BaT that has a engine from a 330Zhp and 6 speed manual which could be a fun dad mobile for a few years, but in terms of utility is basically the same as the 2018 Accord.
My daughters squish into the back seats for ice cream trips to DQ etc. At this point as teens theyd like to drive the Porsche when they get licensed. I got them a civic because its safe and cheap to operate. Demands little. The mini van is the go to for family long distance outings.
Targa would probably be most useful in your case, but that listed price for the one above is ridiculous IMO. Keep an eye on private sales (PCNA, CL, Renn, etc.) and you should be able to find something priced more reasonably. Dealerships are definitely putting high prices seeing if they can pull it off. Be patient, there are still deals to be had, just may need to expand search distance.
Cant beat the practicality of an E46 compared to a 911. Ive had my 996 for 5 years, and the kids have no issues back there. My kids were 3 and 5 and now 8 and 10. But like others have said, we had a 2nd car, SUV, the family car. If you only have one car, Id look for a BMW, or some other car with real seats in the back and a real trunk.
It's a Porsche forum. I would never talk "practical" to a new arrival that recently got bit with his first Porsche itch.
Practical is likely where he is coming FROM. Why would I ever send him back there?
Life is short. Cherished memories are often made from the CrAzY things we chose to do. Practical has little to offer in those regards.
I hope the seats fit. And I hope the kiddos get to see dad from behind moving some stick around with his right hand and causing awesome sound from the back.
They'll be talking about it when they have kids. Coolest dad ever!
our kids have rarely been in an automatic car. Both the Accord and Clubman are 6 speed manuals, and the classic mini we just sold was also a 4 speed manual. :-)
100% yes. We are not in a rush. Both our current cars are paid off and we are fine shopping for a reasonable 996 targa or even an early 997.
there is a 2003 Targa near DC for $38k and had 80k miles. It hasnt had the IMS yet.
I bought my 996 last April and it's my only car.
My wife has the SUV/family car and I have 2 girls, 6 and 4. It's not
ideal
for family trips, but we make it work. I have 2 Mifold car seats since they are big enough for them and it makes a world of a difference. Note, not many car seats fit like they're supposed to in the backseat of a 996, but my girls love driving around in the race car. Also, I don't take them on the highway so it's all back/local roads... which I don't mind.
Best of luck!
Thanks, I'm a stay at home dad, so the car would be the primary school drop/pickup vehicle. For Costco or Large grocery store runs (1-2 twice a month), I would probably use my wife's car since she only commutes to her office downtown at most twice a week. We had a "marital" discussion last night and she "suggests" waiting 12-18 months to see if the used car market cools off a bit and it would let us save some more cash and not be reliant so much on the Accord's value for the purchase. All reasonable, but what fun is that :-)
