Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone I recently purchased a 996 from a well known auction/bid site. Car has a clean title, clean Carfax and with some nice options. I bought it from from a small dealer. The car was reasonable value for the current market, but more importantly had the 220 / LSD factory option, which was one of the main reasons i went for this car. Admittedly, like a few who buy from these auction sites, I never get to view the car nor have time to arrange a PPI,.so yes I am one of those people. Anyway, I recently got the car home, only to discover the transmission is not the original one and after some checks and more research, its not even an LSD transmission, even though the original car and build had it!! So basically the car I bought wasn't what I was expecting or led to believe.... The car also has the early TC.. does that work hand in hand with the LSD, should it be disabled? What are my options here? Thoughts welcome.

POST 2Original post

Well, had it had an LSD, it’s likely it would have needed a service - so, maybe that will ease your pain. Although, I would be pissed too. LSD options, I would consider plate type which leaves you with: Guard - they sell their own LSD and also rebuild stock units. They are extremely highly regarded and you can call them up and talk to them, they will not steer you wrong. That said, you are getting what you pay for, it is not inexpensive. OS Giken - these are not a true plug and play solution as most gearboxes will require some clearancing of the case and stub axles or a set of G50 stub axles. It’s not a hugely difficult process and there are transmission vendors that can help guide you through the process for your particular gear box. I had mine done by a local race shop but know through experience that California Motorsports has the knowledge and supports the parts, so they can take care of you. I dealt with Roger there. You’re not getting out inexpensively for the OS LSD either, figure you will pay about $2K for the part plus install. I can speak from experience on the OS part, it works really well and completely transformed the on track performance of the car. If the car was strictly to be used on the street, I would save the money - it’s very hard to responsibly push the car to the envelope where the LSD comes into its own on the street and the rear weight bias and modest power output means acceleration is not grip limited.

POST 3Original post

That's a crappy situation to be in, no matter if the LSD would need service or not. Like zbomb said, you could add an aftermarket one but before you consider any next steps I'd reach out to the dealer and/or the auction site and present the issue. Whether they knew or not, the car was misrepresented and sold with something it did not actually have. There have been instances where the fee you pay in addition to the purchase price has been refunded to make things right. It's worth a shot and it's money you could use towards a new LSD.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17869827

Thanks, I've done both. Will see what they have to say.

POST 5Original post

As you are lining up your ducks, give Guard a call. They had a rebuild program years ago that I used. They ship you an LSD built to your specs, and you ship them yours. I did in thru my Porsche Indy. It was substantially less than buying a new one and works beautifully. Don't know if they still have the program, but it may be worth a call. As a side note, the Oem original on my car was not an LSD. Assumed it was. I was getting frustrated with a particular turn (see my avatar picture, same turn with my wife in the passenger seat) where my inside rear wheel was spinning and I had no power going to the outside tire. It's a low speed but quick turn that you need outside wheel power to steer and slingshot out of. Couldn't figure out why until my shop told me it was not an LSD. Quite frankly I don't give a damn about traction control. I give a damn about an LSD, especially on a 911. It solves a lot of issues on and off the track. Good luck with getting everything settled.

POST 6Original post

Sorry to hear about this, glad you figured it out early in the process. Keep us posted. False advertising is a terrible thing although I wonder if the seller even knew about the trans swap?

POST 7Original post

I'd be spending every waking moment pursuing the dealer that sold it. Was it advertised with 220? If so, I'd be screeenshotting that everywhere I could find it. If the auction site was BaT, they are pretty clear that they do not get involved.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17870322

Thanks, yes Guard seem to be the go to guys. Not sure what I'd send them exactly, the standard open diff? Either way, i'm gonna be out of pocket and bought a car that wasn't what I expected. I'd not have an issue is the LSD was needing a service etc, but the fact the LSD isn't present is another level.... My car has the 220 option code, on the hood sticker and confirmed by my local dealer the car came with the LSD option, but now its a different gearbox in the car, i've done the tests (wheels in the air - opposite spin, one wheel on the ground, no friction) and lastly I spoke again with my local dealer who told me its not a LSD transmission based on the number.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17870355

Yes, advertised with the 220 LSD, and proudly so...

POST 10Original post

My Porsche Indy worked out the details with Guard. I wish I could give you more info. Probably a number of guys reading this thread that can provide technical acumen. Depending on your skill set, I would highly recommend finding a local Porsche Indy that supports club racing and DE folks. They will know the what and how's.

POST 11Original post

In this case BaT will refund your buyers fee, I think.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 17870485

This would surprise me unless it goes hand in hand with banning that seller. Why should BaT pay anything? It sounds to me like the seller was truly mistaken. Even assuming they were nasty enough to engage in deliberate deception, the stakes are just too high on BaT. Get a bad rep and you are basically branded for life. I bet that the seller makes good on this if the buyer approaches correctly.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17870541

Approached the seller. We had great comms, before and after. I've brought this up, however they are not willing to offer anything.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 17870557

I'd not be quiet about that. Both on BaT and on other social media. Let the Internet trolls eat them alive.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 17870562

Agree 100%. You gave them a chance to make it right and they declined. Mind posting a link to the auction for those that are curious?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17870541

One or the other. If the seller refuses I'm guessing BaT would refund some, if not all of the buyers fee, just basing off things I have heard through the grave-vine in other cases bordering on "false advertisement." It would definitely be worth a shot for the OP to ask, in my opinion. If they say no, then they say no.

POST 17Original post

Tyler Hoover from Hoovies garage just posted a vid where he claimed the car was misrepresented and he stated BaT gave him his entire buyers fee back. Now he has 1M+ subscribers, and I assume you don't. But I would def let them know about your dissatisfaction. Most reputable dealers I have done business with would attempt to make this right by offering some type of monetary compensation or simply taking the car back. Best of luck.

POST 18Original post

Hoovie got his money back because he's Hoovie. BaT won't do a thing here. BaT, Cars and Bids, and others make it clear that they're not traditional auction sites. They connect sellers with potential buyers, nothing more. They're glorified listing services with a gamification layer.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17870557

the Red one from Miami? That one was VERY clearly advertised as having a LSD. Good luck with a resolution!

POST 20Original post

What did your contract or bill of sale look like? Having a fundamental item like the transmission replaced is more significant than not having one of the options as advertised. If this were me, I'd contact an attorney. LSD option commands a premium, which is why it was advertised as such.

POST 21Original post

Not just that, the transmission was replaced. Id fight this one hard. Unless of course those 2 things dont matter to you or a future buyer? The LSD on my 99 probably hasnt worked in years, but I have no traction issues on my car whatsoever. I cant get the tail out no matter what I do, street or track, save from sliding around in the snow. So even though my car has the 220 option, I dont really need it or use it.

POST 22Original post

That seller relies on BaT to move quite a few cars. I'd definitely be making noise.

POST 23Original post

It's nice that the seller is a dealer, as it gives you some avenues that are not available with a private seller. Look into the dealer's laws in the state in which they reside. You can usually open a complaint with the state. Personally, I'd skip a lawyer unless it's for a simple consultation on options. You aren't going to retain a hired gun to chase a few thousand dollars (at most). Will cost more to hire the attorney than to update the diff.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17871164, 17871328

Nope, not that one. Thanks. The auction site have told me to pursue the seller.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17871257, 17871189

If the replaced trans was an LSD one, it woudn't be a issue. I wanted an LSD car, even if the LSD was on its way out. I think a future buyer would want the LSD, as its a very strong selling point. Exactly why I bought the car.

POST 26Original post

Have you visually confirmed that the differential is in fact an open one? Is the gearbox a G96/00 or 01? As people have said on this thread, a factory one would most likely not still be working now and need to be rebuilt. They were not very robust.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17872053

Yes, confirmed and tested. It's an open diff. The transmission i've learnt came from a car that wasn't optioned with an LSD.

POST 28Original post

Aside from the differential, are the G96 transmissions any different when they have a factory installed LSD? Do they have different model numbers stamped on the case, like the x51 engines do?

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17872109

Not sure on this.
