Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After I replaced them all, the engine ran much smoother.

I intend to replace my spark plugs on my 1999 996 and debating whether or not to replace the coils.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Changed spark plugs today and accidentally dropped the cyl 6 coil pack and snapped the connector off. Called around looking for a coil pack and Autozone was the only place that had one...and it was a Duralast. I figured I'd get it and swap it out with an OEM later so I could drive the car this weekend. Well, here is what I found. Opened the duralast box and BERU was written all over the pack. Not only that, but it came with a lifetime warranty it cracks/goes out. Not bad for $50 out the door.
PS - will a misfire CEL go out on its own? Didn't quite get cyl 2 snapped in place and it was running on only 5 and threw the code.
My '04 threw a code after installing new packs / plugs @ 30k
it was definitely missing on the #1 cylinder, simply removed and reinstalled
the pack and no more CEL
Does anyone replace their ignition coils as a preventative operation, or just wait until one goes bad. I intend to replace my spark plugs on my 1999 996 and debating whether or not to replace the coils.
Replacing them as a maintenance item is not a bad idea. From what I can tell, they go bad gradually and even of your car is not throwing codes, the coils may not be firing optimally. I replaced all six even though only one was "bad" and it was throwing codes intermittently. After I replaced them all, the engine ran much smoother.
You should replace coils, spark plug tubes/o-rings while you are replacing the plugs. It's the same kind of logic as replacing the throw out bearing while doing your clutch regardless if it is fine now. Remember plastic deteriorates over time regardless of mileage.
I generally agree with this, especially if you are paying someone else to do the work. I'm typically my own mechanic so changing dead coils won't take me more than a few minutes, but this obviously doesn't apply to everyone's situation. I should have clarified that in my earlier post.
I've got a full set of plugs, coils and tubes if anyone wants them.
Was on a roadtrip out of state when mine went out. Had to get them replaced at the dealer when I already had them sitting in my garage back home...
Anyone know of a DIY with pics showing the process with the motor in the car? Looking at the Pelican article it sounds simple enough, but the important pics are with the motor out which obviously makes things easier to get to.
Also, what (if any) risks are there to driving it while it's misfiring (P0300 and P0301 (cyl 1)) to either take it to my Indy (~2 miles) or a place I can use a garage (~5 miles)?

As long as the CEL is not flashing and the engine is not struggling, it should be OK to drive 2 to 5 miles.
Thanks Ahsai.
Still would like to see some "in place" pics to decide if I want to fool with it or not. If I knew I could use the lift in my friend's body shop I'd give it a shot with the info I have, just not a fan of being on my back and trying to get a view of stuff that I'm not familiar with
Trust me, the coils are pretty easy. The hardest time I had with them was simply getting one or two of the hex head bolts undone as you don't have a ton of leverage.
