I just installed a Kenwood DDX9902S that came with a mic.

I ran my aftermarket head unit's mic to the factory location.

I ran the mic cable behind the dash, then down around the fuse box (underneath the cover panel and removable carpeted trim) then underneath the inner rubber door seal (on the chassis of the driver side door, not on the door itself) and then up behind the A-pillar trim and out from behind the sunvisor.

Suggestion
I would run your aftermarket mic behind center console to upper dash hood and attach it in the factory mic location.

Suggestion
I found putting 1/8" foam in front of the mic and using lots of silicone around the body of the mic to dampen any externally induced microphonic noises by introducing added mass to help a little bit.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've installed a 2DIN unit and the built in mic is marginal. There is a cable on the HU for an external mic. There is an original factory mic in place, although the car (2004 C2 coupe - Bose/MOST) was not equipped with a phone. Q1: is it worth attempting to connect that mic to the new head unit? and, if so; Q2: where do the connectors terminate? I've examined every wiring diagram and the only references are to connectors at the amp. My car is stickered as the 680 option. All information, ideas & comments appreciated.
Q1: NO
I would run your aftermarket mic behind center console to upper dash hood and attach it in the factory mic location. It's pretty easy to take off your dash hood and instrument cluster assembly.

This is exactly what I did in my 996. Unfortunately, it's a fairly irrelevant discussion topic. The interior noise in the 996 cabin created by the engine and by tire noise on the road make hands-free conversations very difficult if the car is moving.
Yes I agree with that but better than the factory mic which is crappy to begin with. I found putting 1/8" foam in front of the mic and using lots of silicone around the body of the mic to dampen any externally induced microphonic noises by introducing added mass to help a little bit. However I found the rear view mirror area to be more effective in conversations but it's harder to run cable up there without getting an extension cord and being more intrusive.
Do what I did:
I ran the mic cable behind the dash, then down around the fuse box (underneath the cover panel and removable carpeted trim) then underneath the inner rubber door seal (on the chassis of the driver side door, not on the door itself) and then up behind the A-pillar trim and out from behind the sunvisor. The wire is not in view and the mic is positioned perfectly for speaking since it's near your head. I get zero complaints from people with whom I speak to while using it. The only pain is that I have to unclip the mic if I'm using a window shade, but that's not a big deal to me.
Great write-up, bal. I'll bet it has helped lots of folks with their installs. Have you found the sound quality from the mike in that position to be OK?
I just installed a Kenwood DDX9902S that came with a mic. CAI told me they experimented with several locations, and found the best spot was right on top of the steering column. I use the phone, and SIRI frequently, and the quality has been acceptable.
