I had a few downshifting issues, from 3rd to 2nd as well, and most of the time it was due to my panic while being too aggressive: Id overshoot the gate for 1st and 2nd, moving into the reverse gate and not being able to enter the gear.

I think if it's manual, it's single (and you need to use the tool to install a mount), and if it's Tiptronic, then there are two (different) mounts and you can buy the whole assembly with the mounts already installed (or, more inexpensively, replace both mounts with the tool).

On his first run after installing the new Tip mount, he was able to downshift from 3rd without issue, but that was a 75% "learn the course" run, so we don't know it it was due to less force on the mount due to using less than max braking on the course-learning run, or if the presumably weaker Tip mount worked initially but was quickly weakened by the first application of stress.

I may get the OEM mount -- it's triple the price, but still not very expensive, and I just want this issue permanently done.
I need to replace the transmission mounts in my 2000 996.1. I don't want to increase NVH at all, so I'd like to know what brand is closest to OEM (or if something is better than OEM but does not increase NVH at all).
I'm also torn between replacing the individual mounts or the entire mount assembly. Replacing the individual mounts is less expensive, but requires buying or renting a mount removal/install tool (
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...-tool-cta-2303
). Apparently, the replacement part for the entire assembly is a 997 part number (997.375.03.303) -- if that 997 mount assembly truly performs better than the 996 original, it might be worth buying the entire mount assembly.
The options are below:

If anyone has any info on whether the 997 part is an improvement on the original 996 mount, or which of the individual mount insert replacement brands are best (closest to Porsche OEM, or better than OEM with no NVH added), I'd appreciate your feedback.
The 997 Transmission Mount Assembly is only $306 here (
https://porsche.oempartsonline.com/o...et-99737503303
), so I'll probably go with that to avoid the hassle of pushing in the inserts and getting the tool, and hopefully the superseding 997 part is an upgrade performance wise. I'm trying to confirm that it fits a 2000 996.1 -- the link says it does not fit a 2000 996, but the detailed listing shows it fits a 2001, so it seems like it should fit a 2000. I've message the seller, no response yet. If anybody knows whether or not 9737503303 fits an early 996.1 6-speed, please let me know.

Is your car an automatic? It looks like you are linking to both manual mounts (just the insert), and what I think of as the turbo mount (is it the same as an automatic mount)?

I used the ro and it feels like factory.
You can get it cheaper here:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=8756&jsn=830
Also, if manual, there is only 1 required for the 996, not 2.
It does require the tool.
If you have an automatic, it requires the tool plus the automatic adapter.
Mine is a 2000 996.1 6-speed. Honestly, the more I look at parts listings the more I get confused. I saw some comments that a different mount is used for Tip, but I've also seen some parts listings that show that it's for both. And the whole assembly 997 listing shows it fits 2001 996.1 (presumably 6-speed), but not 2000.
I've been complaining about Pelican parts info in their listing, but now I'm starting to get that it's complicated with superseding parts.
Thanks for the info. I'm very confused about it needing only 1 mount. Aren't the mounts the two rubber things in the 997.375.033.03 photo below? Or is the picture below actually a Tip part and the 6-speed looks different?
Also, how easy is it to insert the mount and have it aligned/rotated correctly with the tool? Also (sorry for barrage of questions), should I order "stops" (
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...=c&SVSVSI=0667
) as well (assuming 2 stops required)?
Check out the videos online for the installation tool.

The 997 part you are looking at is for the turbo cars, not a 996 non-turbo.
The tool is very straightforward to use, I used it to install a lemforder mount insert into my 04 996.2 manual.

With the tool, the job is pretty easy.
Alignment isn't a concern really, but aligning would not be difficult either.
Without using the tool it is almost impossible without dropping the transmission and using a press.
You can rent the tool from members here.
I own the tool and have loaned it locally, but don't loan by mail.
I've had tools that never returned and had to repurchase.
If I can drive to someone's house, then I'll loan them a tool....maybe.
The stops are just thick rubber, and normally are in good condition in my experience.
No time to respond at the moment -- but a huge thank you to
@TexSquirrel
and
@Eric Kessel
-- I was hugely confused (parts listings on various sites didn't really help). There's no substitute for the voice of experience.
I too was confused about which trans the OP had.
FWIW, I went with the Lemf
rder mount with some RTV in the hollow spots. I tried some 2-part stuff but couldn't get it to cure. I don't think the RTV is really doing anything.
Here are some pics from my replacement.
Went for lemfrder part too.
Before fitting it I used it as a mold to make the inserts myself using 80 Sh(A) polyurethane resin.
Result was good but apart from increasing NVH it did not reduce the thud when unloading-loading the drive train when shifting. I removed the inserts.
I run rss semi-solid engine mounts.
I seriously don't think the RTV will make any difference. If the mount can break up hard rubber then RTV has no chance of being useful. Best option to help the stock mount is one of these in polyurethane. They come in two densities i have the yellow softer one and it stiffens a stock mount a little but will actually last.
Google powerflex bushings
Ummm, yeah, that's why I mentioned it in my post.
No need to. I tried some Powerflex bushings on the M5. I hated what they did to the ride quality so I removed them and went back to stock.
Lol, would have been easier not to waste your time in the first place
Interesting, i never really noticed any additional harshness on mine with the powerflex fitted. Everyone will have a different experience i guess.
Searching older parts has become a bit of a minefield with all the replacement numbers etc. Glad rennlist has a heap of info to help.
Thanks for all the help. I'm going to order 1 Lemforder mount and 2 mount stops from Pelican. And the mount removal/install tool from FCP Euro. Is there anything else I should replace?
f
Whenever I have to remove a plastic belly pan on any car, I try to have a some extra clips/fasteners because it seems like a few are always broken/missing.
Good idea. I need to figure out what clips/fasteners to order. I also need a plastic fastener for the for the front trunk near the tuck release handle (lost one when I cleaned the radiators).
I don't have a QuickJack or Lift -- will there be any difficulty getting the pan off with a rear floor jack only? (I do have a separate scissor jack to hold up the transmission)
Mounts should be hear in a couple of days (already received the tool from FCP Euro). I'm glad you posted this picture of your car on ramps. I've never had ramps because I didn't they'd work on my (relatively slippery) Racedeck flooring in the garage, but I'm going to get some ramps and just jack up each side to place the ramp under each wheel. Ramps will make everything much easier and feels a lot safer than jacks and jack stands.
Thanks so much for the all the feedback in this thread, it was very helpful. I have to say it was quite difficult to get the old mount out and the new mount in t-- it took quite a bit of force and a lot of time with the AGA tool.
The old mount was definitely damaged -- there were two holes in the inset areas where there should be solid rubber. Shifting does feel better, but the my son still had difficulty downshifting from 3rd to 2nd in an autocross while full-on on the brakes. This was the problem I was trying to solve -- it's better, but not fully fixed.
The shape of the Lemforder Mount looks quite different from the original. It is marked part number 997.375.055.01. It shows as "fits 2000 Carrera" on Pelican, but is a different shape than the URO, Hamburg Technic, and Porsche OEM mounts. The new Porsche branded mount stops did stretch over the different shape but wasn't an exact match. Is this different shape of the Lemforder an issue?
I'm not sure. I used Lemforder part #996.375.055.0
5
and it looked identical to my original mount from '98.
I do this a lot too. Race Ramps make a stand alone wheel cradle thing too. I now have a set of Quick Jacks (still unboxed) so my ramp days may be over.
Im thinking what I used is the Lemforder part for Tiptronic. It showed as fits your 2000 996 on Pelican where I ordered it, but that check doesnt include transmission type.
The last thing I want to do is pull it apart and go through this again. I wish somebody sold the whole assembly for the 6-speed, like they do for the dual mount Tip.
You probably accidentally purchased a 997 mount. Most online retailers seem to copy each other regarding fitment, and occasionally a mistake will go unnoticed until a customer installs the part.
You were able to install it on the car, so thats pretty nice. On the other hand, the you now know its not correct for your car, so you may have a nagging feeling that youve got the wrong one installed.
Also, Im a little wary after reading about your difficulty installing it. Did you apply a generous amount of grease? I did, and the install was incredibly easy - much easier than the removal. I wonder if there is a possibility that the 997 mount is fractionally larger, making the installation much more difficult. If it is, I wonder whether the difficulty of removal (in a few years) will be aggravating.
Thank you. Great info! I do think I will need to replace it. What I ordered turns out to be the Tip version for the 996 (which now uses the 997 part), though it is not marked Tip on the parts listing. Just thinking about how the Tiptronic shifts are probably less abrupt than the manual, and the Tiptronic mount assembly has two mounts, versus a single mount on the 6-speed, the rubber in the Tip mounts is probably much softer versus the proper 6-speed single mount. Hopefully this still explains the 3rd to 2nd downshift difficult in an autocross during max braking.
With regard to putting the Tip mount on, good to hear that it shouldn't take too much force. I think the Tip mount is at least slightly different in that it is rounded on both ends and doesn't have the small lip on one end talked about at 6:22 in the AGA video (
LATER EDIT: I just realized from watching the AGA video again that the lip they talk about is manually machined by AGA onto the Lemforder mounts AGA sells (or used to sell, they too are out of stock). He say's it's fine to install others that don't have the lip
). Here is the Lemforder mount I have ==>
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...375-055-01-OEM
. This looks like the correct Lemforder mount for the 6-speed ==> (
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...375-055-05-M69
), but it is marked "No Longer Available" on Pelican, so I'll need to find another source, or go with Uro or Porsche OEM on Pelican.
Jeez, I looked around for a Lemforder mount, but its out of stock everywhere. I would personally choose an OEM Porsche mount.
Im a bit unsure whether the proper mount will fix the max-braking downshifting 3->2 issue. Considering that your new mount is fully bolted up tightly, it ought to be handling the movement well enough.
What exactly is the issue? Is the lever not going into gear? I had a few downshifting issues, from 3rd to 2nd as well, and most of the time it was due to my panic while being too aggressive: Id overshoot the gate for 1st and 2nd, moving into the reverse gate and not being able to enter the gear. After lots of practice, Ive been able to enter the gear nicely.
Another possibility is that the throttle pedal may not offer the best position for blipping while heel-toeing. The Rennline adjustable throttle pedal is a great addition to adjust to your liking. Given that your son is a sim racer, this will be a mod that he understands and may even enjoy fiddling with.
And regarding your new mount. I wonder if youll have to purchase a Tiptronic adapter for your mount removal tool, since you have the Tip mount installed now. I dont think its likely that youll need it (because you installed it without it), but there may be a possibility that you will and you may encounter a situation where your car will remain on jackstands until you purchase the proper adapter.
Thanks very much for feedback. I may get the OEM mount -- it's triple the price, but still not very expensive, and I just want this issue permanently done. It's beyond weird that Porsche has a part number of every nut and bolt of the 996 but does
NOT
have a part number for the whole mount assembly (which I would happily pay more for to eliminate the need for using the tool) for the 6-speed (parts diagram at bottom of this message), while it does have a part number for the whole assembly for the Tip.
I tend to think you are right that the new Tip mount should have been enough to hold it in place. What makes me question it is that it's meant to be used with two of those Tip mounts, which seems like it would be designed for each mount to be around 50% more pliable for the two in tandem on the Tip, and maybe
too
pliable when used as a single mount in the 6-speed.
I wish we knew. We've been trying to figure out whether the issue is operator error or a mechanical issue. It shifts great in normal driving. He is very, very fast in the car -- he won his class in a totally stock 996.1 (over a very experienced 997.2 S w/385hp), and he had to keep it in second (sacrificing speed on the long straight), so there was probably at least a second or two he would have gained if he could have used third gear. All the 3rd gear runs were blown by the downshift. He has the skill to definitely put the car under absolute maximum possible braking while he's downshifting, so presumably that puts more pressure on the mount. I don't have the driving skills to push the car to the same degree, so I can't really duplicate it. If you have a few minutes, I'd love to get you on a phone call with him to talk through the shifting issue -- sounds like your experience might be able to help.
Our 996 does have the aluminum pedals, which are grippier than than stock rubber. I've kind of purposely not installed an adjustable/helper gas pedal on either the car or the sim rig so that he can drive anything he steps into. He's been invited for try out for a race team, which is a pretty significant opportunity, and that car doesn't have an extended throttle pedal either, so I want him to drive with a fairly standard pedal. He's been practicing on sim with throttle blipping, and in real-world Spec Miatas, and is pretty good at that. The Fanatec manual shifter on the sim is only so-so at replicating the mechanical feel of a real transmission, so that part doesn't translate 100% (pretty much everything else does translate). We are kind of wedded to the Fanatec because it is the only quality shifter on the market with a mechanical switch to go between H-pattern and sequential stick, and he needs sequential for some of his real-world racing prep and some specialized sim races.

Good evening folks. I am refreshing a 2004 C4s I just purchased, doing the engine mounts and transmission mount(s), Not completely clear if the C4s has a single center transmission mount I need to purchase or the dual mount as is used on the Turbo, Any insight would be appreciated and rewarded with a free pair of hands for your next project if you are in Martin or St Lucie county FL : )
Is your C4S a manual or Tiptronic? I think if it's manual, it's single (and you need to use the tool to install a mount), and if it's Tiptronic, then there are two (different) mounts and you can buy the whole assembly with the mounts already installed (or, more inexpensively, replace both mounts with the tool).
BEAR IN MIND YOU ARE TAKING ADVICE FROM THE GUY WHO USED THE WRONG MOUNT (TIP INSTEAD OF 6-SPEED) ON HIS CAR
. So maybe wait for confirmation from someone else!
In the AGA tool video -- he talks about Tiptronic (I think for 4S, that's what's shown anyway) at 2:24. And at 2:50 he talks about manual for a C4S.
You Tube
There is no part# for the complete M96 manual trans mount because the "eye" the mount presses into is a permanent part of the transmission.
The .2 tiptronic mount is sturdy enough for the GT3 and GT2.
You can clean your new mount with brake cleaner and fill the gaps with windshield urethane to make it stiffer.
You might want to investigate stiffer motor mounts too, perhaps 993RS mounts. Yes, allegedly these cause problems with knock sensors. I am unconvinced that is an actual problem with real world cars.
Thanks -- it's very helpful to know why there isn't a separate part.
I think the first video I saw happened to be a 996 GT3 manual using the dual mount (997 Tiptronic part I think). In the case of the GT2/3 -- there's actually two rubber Tip mounts being used, so I'm guessing the pair of Tip mounts has twice the rigidity of my single Tip mount, so I probably need to strengthen mine.
Thanks for the idea of strengthening the existing Tip mount. I may resort to that in unlikely event I can't remove it. Otherwise, I'll probably go with removing it and replacing it with the stock Porsche manual mount. I'd rather stick needles in my eye than replace the mount again, but the whole needle in my eye thing probably wouldn't fix the shifting problem
. This car leads a "Clark Kent" life 99% of the time, I'm only letting my son temporarily defile it for the occasional autocross
until he gets his own car, so I don't want to add any NVH. I've watched all the mount videos and it seems like NVH is increased with virtually all of the "performance" mounts. Not sure if it's enough to cause the knock sensor issues, but they definitely said they could immediately feel the increased vibration, so I'm going to stick with as close to OEM as possible.
Dang, too bad I didn't see this earlier. I have a spare mount and the tool to swap it out.
I ended having to replace the front of the transmission casing because the mount holder snapped when I was driving. No idea when or how it happened as I was doing some other work, dropped the plastic pan, and a section of the mount dropped out! I bought the rubber mount to put in but the new casing came with it already in place.
My car is filthy as we just had a cyclone come through and drop ungodly amounts of rain on us. C4S did splendidly......
Sorry, Im still pretty new to performance driving, so I dont think I would be the best person to discuss this with. If you record a video of the shifting problem, Im sure one of our resident track rats can easily tell you what the problem is.
Another suggestion may be to have a driving instructor ride along with your son to identify and fix the problem.
Thanks -- great ideas. Not sure why I didn't think of having an instructor ride along on one of the runs. He's got GoPro video, but need to move it back further to see the shifting, will do this for next time.
