Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'addressable and at what cost' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'addressable and at what cost' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check have a presence elsewhere' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
In any case, just about any large metro area should have a good reputable automotive instrument repair facility.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine have gone dark. There is nothing visible in the lower right quadrant of the instrument cluster, although I can see the clock numbers if the sun is hitting on the cluster at just the right angle. Is this just a failure of illumination? Ideas? All the rest of the instruments work fine.
Thanks.
About all I can recommend is you contact a reputable automotive instrument repair facility and see what you can learn.
I have some 2nd hand experience with a bad cluster arising from an always on ABS LED but the failure mode in this case was the loss of ground control. The "fail safe" mode is with no ground control ground is made by default and because the LED is always powered this turns on the LED.
It could be -- this is just a WAG -- that in your car's case, ground can't be made and the section does not light up. If I'm right this can be a failed I/O buffer chip which can be unsoldered and replaced.
In any case, just about any large metro area should have a good reputable automotive instrument repair facility. A google search should turn one up.
There is VDO Repair (
www.vdorepair.com
) which has a presence on the west coast (well, the Porsche facility is in Lake Havasu City, AZ) and could -- I have not bothered to check -- have a presence elsewhere.
There is Palo Alto Speedometer (Palo Alto, CA) which I have never used but others here on the west coast, in the SF bay area, have used and have good things to say about the business.
My point is with an instrument cluster you are not limited to some local facility should you be unable to find one you would care to entrust with your gage cluster.
The gage cluster once removed is shippable. If you go this route call first of course get some guidance on shipping: how to wrap, box, and what insurance to buy. Oh and some opinion as to whether the problem is addressable and at what cost.
