The same venturi tube is used on 1.8T and 2.0T VW's.

On the supercharged G60 Corrado VW used a Teves 02 hydraulic assist brake master cylinder - also used on most Ferarri cars from the early 90's

Suggestion
This venturi tube is a mechanical device, just a plastic "Y" connector with one leg of the Y connected to the air box pipe, and is designed with a venturi effect at the Y by using a restrictor causing a high velocity/pressure drop at the venturi that increases the vacuum a little more than the engine can produce on its own...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anybody of you can exactly tell me where the breather hose on the air intake between airbox and throttle body goes to?
As far as I know this hose is only present on mk2 tiptronic cars.
I reused the photo from this topic:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...onic-hose.html
The line is connected to the venturi line which is in connection with the brake booster. It is also called a sucking jet pump. As the venturi effect will create a higher vacuum then can be found in the intake manifold.
For the tiptronic it is called vernuri line and is part # 996 110 170 51
It interconnects the air intake before the throttle body and the intake manifold part # 996 110 151 01
Its function is to provide a steady idle rpm for the tiptronic cars when halted and holding the brake. When stopped the TB is closed so a vacuum is created in the intake manifold. Via the venturi line some air is drawn into the engine. Mowt probably it has to to with the additional load of the tiptronic transmission when in Driving mode.
The rotating parts in the torque converter create an external load so rpm's could be more irregular. The additional air solves this. Most probably also to compensate when releasing the break and driving off. Is that correct?
The venturi also keeps air speed up during gear changes with the tip. Removing it will create a loss of performance between gear changes, especially between 4-5 gears (I quoted here Jake Raby).
As I converted my tip to a manual for now I will just close off the loose end. Will try to figure out which parts I need to convert this part of the engine to a manual too.
hi all, I was hoping someone could help me understand whether it's possible that a manual (not swapped) c4s (not a x51 car) has the Venturi tube you see in the picture that I always thought is only present on trip or turbo cars. Have you even seen it before? I'm going back to stock airbox and noticed the tube so I'd have to buy a trip airbox to fit that tube in the intake connector to airbox. However I'm very confused on why it's there in the first place. Any suggestion?
Tube that usually is in trip cars.
Silk,
Using the same image, what is this white round thing that plugs into the plenum? I was replacing that coolant hose connector and discovered it was just hanging loose and no longer plugged into the plenum. No idea how long that had been going on!
@gdm92
the venturi tube is only used on the Tiptronic cars. Your car ( manual) must have had an engine installed from a Tiptronic car...
@996-CAB
the round white/black valve is a vacuum check valve, it allows vacuum to only go one way and connects to the divers side rubber intake boot on the bottom... being loose will cause a small vacuum leak..
interesting, the no. seems to match with the warranty database I got when I bought it.. I guess regardless, if it's a manual though I shouldn't care as much if that tube is connected to the airbox (asking since I ended up buying an airbox with the additional small hose to attach that one). Right?
in other words, does it look to you what I think it is or you think it's something else?
You are correct, with the manual trans you should not care whether that venturi hose is used or not.. As you can see, the Fabspeed Carbon Fiber Intake actually has the hose plugged off defeating the venturi function...But also hooking it up to the rubber intake hose will not hurt and will actually give a bit more vacuum to the power brake booster under certain conditions..
You can buy the Certified build sheet from Porsche that will have the original engine #.
You can sweet talk a Service Manager at a Porsche Dealership to supply you with all warranty repair documents..( with previous owners info redacted)
Then compare your installed engine #...
lol..you couldn't find it because it is not common knowledge, or Officially printed, or unofficially printed ( untill now) ....it just now became known due to someone who "knows things"..sometimes knowing the little things can be important about big things...
First of all thanks so much for all the replies here. The one thing I was confused about is, if my vacuum tube is currently closed off, where is the break pump getting the vacuum from? Isn't that tube that i circled in white connected to the pump?
Yes, you are a bit confused.
First off you keep using the word "pump" , there is no pump or vacuum pump on the 996 power brake assist system..
There is a power booster, that is just a big 10"-12" rubber vacuum diaphragm/housing that uses vacuum power to boost brake effort pressures...The brake booster gets it's vacuum straight from the engines intake manifold...
On Tip's and X51 where engine vacuum is a bit low at times, a venturi tube is used to increase the vacuum a little...

A lot of Science and Physics , just for a little more vacuum, but helps on the Tips and X51 cars..Your car with the manual trans doesn't need it ,but it doesn't hurt to have it either...So on your car you can cap the line, or connect it to the intake boot, or just put a small air filter on it..
Yea, they call it a vacuum amplifier until you have a broken or missing one and go to the parts guy to get one. Then you better call it a Venturi Tube and tell him where to find it on the diagram or he will look at you with a blank stare...lol
So much time can get lost due to translation errors also...especially with Porsche being German to English....FoMoCo used these Venturi Tubes also on the 1987-88 TurboCoupes..
The same venturi tube is used on 1.8T and 2.0T VW's. On the supercharged G60 Corrado VW used a Teves 02 hydraulic assist brake master cylinder - also used on most Ferarri cars from the early 90's
I like the feel of the hydraulic assisted braking systems...to me they have a higher quality feel than a vacuum assisted braking system..... of course they probably should as I'm sure they cost more to produce than a simple vacuum assisted ones...
Are you saying all the 90's Ferrari's have Hydro-Boosted braking systems?
All the T-Bird TurboCoupes were Hydro-Boost, the Venturi Tubes were just for vacuum accessories, A/C ect...
you are so helpful, thanks so much. So I guess in my case if I wanted to put it to stock (for a manual) I'd need to replace that Y tube with the standard tube that only goes to the manifold and not also back to the box.
Yes, Ferrari used the Teves 02 combined ABS unit and hydro brake booster on their ABS equipped cars from the late 80's to around '96. The same Teves 02 was used on Mk3 Passat, all Corrados, Golf G40's, some Volvo's, some Land Rovers. It was very popular and very complicated system. Absolutely no parts are available any more so keeping one working is tough. The electric hydraulic pump seem to fail; I have changed mine a few times.
For connoisseurs of archaic technology there is some info here:

Your welcome !! Yes, haing the manual trans, you have several options...
Looks like the FoMoCo TurboCoupe uses the same Teves II Hydroboost ...and parts are readily available from many rebuilders and even Performance Specialty shops..So next time you need to fix one look for 87-88 TurboCoupe parts..

Those 87-88 TurboCoupes were WAY ahead of their time Technically, had 4 wheels discs, ABS, HydroBoost, Posi-Trac, Electronic Struts/Shocks that would stiffen under aggressive driving, and ALL the Electronic creature comforts, Recaro 8 way electric seats, keyless entry, Auto headlights that would come on/off and dim/brighten, Auto Mirrors, Seat memory, Killer Bose Sound Systems, Climate Control, Electric Defrosters, Cruise/Tilt, they had everything but Navi...lol..and were just so smooth driving/handling...
I had an '86 TurboCoupe. It was pretty hilariously funny to drive, the huge Garret turbo took forever to spool up and when it did hold on. The lighter 2 3 sohc motor made it handle better than the V8. I did have the timing belt break, and some other odd problems typical of 80's electronics.
The 87/88 with the intercooler was a better car though I like the quad headlights and smooth hood of the 84-86.
