(Note, all of mine did need valve cover gaskets replaced due to oil leaks, but ran strong before and after that.)

To me the real test would be to put a block of wood under the accelerator pedal so it would have the same power as before the swap, then daily drive the car , you should not be able to tell any difference..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There was a thread last year on the Audi 2.7 swap, but for the life of me I can't find it now, so I'll ask the question here. I'm seriously considering the 2.7 swap for an upcoming build, but the 2.7 seems to have a poor reputation as well. Problematic and unreliable. The advantage I see is that even if unreliable, they cost less than a quarter of a quality M9X build. Do I have that correct? Would anyone here know if a quality 2.7 build has been standardized? Thanks

Not sure where this is coming from. Those things are bulletproof. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-in-996-a.html

Well, the 2.7tt did have some problems with its complicated bi turbo setup, especially when it was older. But that was easily fixed with the aftermarket. swapping in a single simple turbo setup got rid of the sometimes problematic twin complicated oem 2.7tt setup. This single turbo setup could be boosted up to 450+ hp fairly easily on stock internals. Actually the engine itself was an iron block, timing belt setup & forged internals, beefy, robust, and many gearheads say bulletproof till the boost got pushed to high... 2.7t is a legend, similar to the Mezger in our Porsche world.

POST 4Original post

When you say you are seriously considering doing the engine swap, do you mean you are going to do it your self, or you are going to commission someone to do it? I think there is a big difference in the two in terms of cost $$$ or time $$$ or even in the quality of the outcome.. Someone like Chavis who has been doing a dozen or two LS swaps a year for years has already made all the mistakes and learned from them. All the little things that can end up being a problem or a leak with all the remounting, re-routing of hoses for coolant, for power steering, for A/C , for wiring. Resizing to adapt different sizes. Every connection, reroute , or resize has the potential to be a problem, so the person doing the swap will matter greatly on the finished outcome.. I had a friend who did one of the first 996 LS swaps about 15 years ago ( I bought the m96 from him for $1500). It took him a year to complete the swap and he was very dedicated and not a slow worker. I know some of the things he fabricated can just be bought $$ now. But he sold the car about 6 months after he finished, I think he was just tired of it... As far as I know, and I haven't studied that hard on it, but a turn key swap will cost about $30K unless your labor is free. To me the real test would be to put a block of wood under the accelerator pedal so it would have the same power as before the swap, then daily drive the car , you should not be able to tell any difference.. That would indicate a job well done... I know for sure on a LS swap, two very noticeable differences will be readily apparent, the gearing and the sound.

Plus 1 I've had multiple 2.7t powered vehicles and the engine was never the problem. S4 turbos blew somewhat frequently, but usually due to kids using them hard and poor positioning/cooling in the small engine bay. Auto trans in those cars also always went. (Note, all of mine did need valve cover gaskets replaced due to oil leaks, but ran strong before and after that.) But, a 2.7t with a single turbo swap is a pretty problem-free powerplant. Certainly when compared to the m9x with scoring and IMS issues plus AOS, cam deviation, and other additional maintenance items. With that said, I'm not 100% sold on the 2.7t swap. If I were going to spend ~$20k I'd be hard pressed to not simply do a reasonable refresh of my stock motor. I'm not sure how much I could get done for that (obviously nothing at fsi), but the na power delivery and flat six legitimacy is worth something to me. I would probably take the 2.7t over an LS, but if LS swaps were as cheap as they used to be maybe I would think differently.

POST 6Original post

Just to shed a little more light on 2.7t swap, from my limited research about a year ago,,, a 2.7T swap, for a DIY will be around $12k. The turn key kit is about $9-10k and a bone yard 2.7tt is $750-1500k depending on boneyard/mileage/condition/etc. to do a basic bolt on freshen/clean up might cost another $1k after a compression check/leak down test first. Well, just checked the kit page out again, seems like everything else in this world, prices have gone up. Seems they also made improvements. Not sure of the availability, or anything else about this kit, do your due diligence. This is an option I'd consider checking out when the time comes. The LS swap seems more main stream with Chavis's extended experience with these swaps... Wondering if a 4s wide body car would be a better candidate for these swaps,,, probably for an LS road car it probably is for sure.... https://www.renn27.com/components/complete-package to the kit...

Isnt the Audi 2.0t the questionable engine?

The 4.2 V8 is. The 2.0T has the carbon issue but relatively not a bad engine.
