Suspected cause
If you are sure you have enough fluid in the tank then it's likely the motor or a loose hose.
Leading evidence: 'motor or a loose hose' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'motor or a loose hose' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check connection and make sure i'm not spraying water' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'll check the connection and make sure I'm not spraying water on the ground instead of the windshield.

I am going to use a tie wrap temporarily until I get around to replacing the cowl piece.

Depending on the cost, I would wonder if it makes any sense to swap the tank as a preventative measure since you will be in there and have to remove it to change the pump anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes... the fluid reservoir is full. My headlight washers work fine. If I activate the windshield washers, the wipers come on, I no longer get any fluid sprayed on the windshield. Every now and then, it will spray for a second or two, then stop. I'm wondering if the pump motor is bad - I'll have to investigate further.
Does anybody else have experience with an issue like this? How hard is it to change the pump motor?
Thanks.
Too much experience with this! Behind the battery, the tube for your washer fluid connects to a T fitting that splits to the 2 windshield washers. Check to make sure that tube is securely in place. Mine comes off all the time.
Changing the pump motor isn't hard. It's the gaining access and removing the tank that's a PITA. To gain access to the fluid reservoir you go in via the driver side wheel well. Once the liner is removed there's a mounting bolt holding the tank in place.
If you are sure you have enough fluid in the tank then it's likely the motor or a loose hose. OTOH, if it's perpetually low then you may have a cracked tank.
My hose (the car's) works free from the connection during DE's for me. The fix like described above is to pull the left frt wheel off and liner (10mm plastic nuts) and reach in to find the loose hose. Takes about 15 - 20 minutes.
just had the same issue this past week; heard the pump running but very little water . Upon further investigation, as I sprayed, water runnoff coming from under driver side front wheel. Yep , right where the tank is . I asked my indi a few questions. luckily it wasn't a cracked tank, just the hose worked its way loose; put a small clamp on that. maybe even a small tie wrap would work also.
My headlight washers work fine, and I have no signs of a leaky tank. I assume they use the same tank - so that rules out a cracked or leaking tank in my mind. I'm hoping it's just a loose connection.
2000996MIA has good point......go to Home Depot / Lowes and look for a small spring loaded clamp. I have have been meaning to do that for the past year and forget to every time the hose comes loose. The hose is something like 4 or 6mm.
Well, I just tried it in the driveway. I can't actually hear the pump running when I hold the lever. The wipers activate, but I hear nothing. No water on the ground either. I'm leaning towards a bad pump.
Since the headlight pump is separate from the windshield pump that seems to make the most sense. Depending on the cost, I would wonder if it makes any sense to swap the tank as a preventative measure since you will be in there and have to remove it to change the pump anyway.
Mine isn't working either, Dennis. I can hear my pump working, just no spraying, though.
My "washer fluid" idiot light is on even though the tank is completely full--is yours?

The windshield/head light washer system is pretty straightforward. Pull LF wheel and remove fender liner and you're 90% there. Removing the tank is a DIY task and will facilitate checking things out. Two separate pumps and a plug-in fluid level gauge mean several places for electrical connection issues, leaking gaskets, and cracked hoses. But, fortunately, there's no rocket science here to figure out.
Two hours tops, even if you're a newbie.

Reopening this thread in hopes someone has words of wisdom. I just acquired this 04 996 cab with 18k miles. When I try to run the windshield washer I hear a noise(assume ww pump) but get no fluid anywhere. Tank is full. I checked to see if fluid was escaping elsewhere but see nothing anywhere. Tubing behind battery seems to be intact. Before I go removing the wheel, would I not get fluid on the ground if the tubing came loose?
The fluid reservoir has two pumps...one for headlights and one for windshield. The reservoir with pumps is removable. But to do so,you must remove the left front wheel and tire and then the fender's inner liner...awkward but very "doable" for an amateur. I suspect that the windshield pump has a fault of some kind. Be sure you block the rear wheels and place a large block or jack under the front suspension for safety reasons.

This part was my problem with this issue. Its called a T-shaped check valve and its $13 on Pelican. My Porsche mechanic buddy says they break all the time.

That confounded thing just gave up the ghost on my 2002 targa. I am going to use a tie wrap temporarily until I get around to replacing the cowl piece.
