Maybe just maybe the tiptronic cluster I pulled out is the original with new faces (albeit the wrong ones ie tiptronic vs manual) but again I cannot see any trace evidence that the faces were replaced (silver/white for orig black).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not a wanted ad, but if you have a lead, Ill take it.
Previous owner of my 99 996.1 (03/98) installed a white-metallic faced
tiptronic
instrument cluster in the
manual
car. The orig either died or they did it for the cool factor (the mismatch notwithstanding). Head scratcher I know.
The question: If I switch back (with new or used) to a manual version how do I set the mileage? (the mileage on the existing tip cluster matches the robust records that came with the car)
The ad: anyone know of an available and compatible manual gauge cluster with black faceplate (OEM) or want to trade? I also search for a OEM rear bumper cover (prev owner also put on a turbo-look rear cover).
Here's the guys to use to reprogram your new cluster. I've used them in the past when swapping clusters in a 986 Boxster. Inexpensive and a smooth, fast turn around.

For a new cluster, check eBay.
ok that's odd.
The original tiptronic cluster put my car in limp mode after my manual swap. The only thing that remedied it was to swap in a manual cluster. PIWIS coding couldn't sort it out.
I had Palo Alto Speedo update the mileage in the manual cluster to match the original one. Took a few days but shipping was 5 days each way.
And I still have the tiptronic steering wheel with the manual cluster. I'm inclined to leave it that way
hi tried to DM you and site said I couldnt b/c you have too many stored messages and cannot accept new until you delete some?
anyways Im interested in learning more about your instrument clusters that may be a fit for me. Part #, condition, anything else you think I should know. Perhaps we can figure out another way to connect direct. Thanks.
Do you remember about how much that ran?
I'm just curious.
My oil pressure backlight is out and my 996.2 gauge does not have the easy to replace bulbs but has soldered surface mount LEDs.
Seems like it would be easier to replace the entire gauge cluster if I want to see my oil pressure while driving at night.
I bet that is a manual cluster with a tiptronic fuel/temp gauge installed. When I mismatched clusters on my car either way (auto cluster in a manual car or manual cluster in an auto car) it went into limp mode and displayed many errors on the screen.
OK following up b/c now a mystery to me. I pulled the cluster and the part number matches what I believe is the manual trans. part rather than tiptronic. I cannot find any evidence that the faces were changed. Can anyone confirm that the part numbers are indeed different? Here is front & back photos.
I recently acquired a black faced cluster for a manual which I intend to install to bring my 996 back to OEM and it has an identical part number sticker as the one I pulled from my vehicle with the tiptronic face shown above. I would expect different part numbers. My vehicle and the replacement cluster are 98 builds. Maybe just maybe the tiptronic cluster I pulled out is the original with new faces (albeit the wrong ones ie tiptronic vs manual) but again I cannot see any trace evidence that the faces were replaced (silver/white for orig black).
Just buy a used cluster with the dials you want.
The cluster comes in two parts, the back section is coded for your car, RWD vs AWD, tip vs manual, mileage etc. The front section is the dials.
Pop it out, take the dials off and put new ones on.
Job done.
