Not sure why it didn't seal properly when I installed the new pump the first time, but after a quick trip to the dealer for another gasket and a little time to remove and replace the new pump, the problem was solved.

Pressuriizing the system, It took basically no time at all to work out that the problem was the seal between the new water pump and the engine.

It cost nothing and I don't think that the kit they lent me had ever been used before.

Suggestion
The Air Lift system is great for filling the car with coolant, it is helpless in pin-pointing the leak if you have one.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All. I am in need of some wisdom from the forum. I am finishing up replacing the water pump, thermostat, coolant reservoir, and most of the coolant hoses in the engine compartment of my 2001 996 cab. Today, I went to refill the car with coolant using an Airlift II vacuum system. Unfortunately, I was unable to pull more than about 22 in Hg of vacuum and the system wouldn't hold that for long. The vacuum fell to about 10 in. Hg in about 20 or 30 seconds. I rechecked all of my R&R work and everything looks good to me. Prior to the recent water pump failure, I hadn't noticed any coolant leak/loss though I think I did add something like a quart of coolant when I first bought the car a few years back (I have put about 3k miles on the car since). Because the pump failure led to a significant coolant leak around the pump bearing and the car lost a good deal of coolant on the road, I had the oil tested to be sure that the broken cooling system hadn't led to the sort of damage that results in coolant intermixing with the oil and that did not reveal any coolant in the oil. I am hoping that somewhere there is a bad hose, weak clamp, hardened o-ring, or something simple like that that is keeping the system from holding a vacuum. But, there are a lot of connections and components to check. Where should I start looking? Or, is it more likely that the problem is something else?
How old is the resi tank? My guess is its cracked or u have a loose clamp. Fill the system with water and see if u can find the leak. Drain and fill with 50/50 after its fixed.
The res tank is brand new and genuine P. Filling with water (and then maybe pressurizing) to find the leak makes a lot of sense to me. Smoke also seems like a great idea and a smoke machine is something that I have been considering for other applications. Does anyone have a recommendation on a smoke machine that makes sense for less-than-everyday use?
Turns out that this same question was recently discussed and I somehow didn't find it before posting. Sorry about that. See

I had a slow leak that took me a long time to find. The Airlift 9I have one) was not any help in finding the leak. I went and got a loaner system pressurizer from either AutoZone or Advanced Auto and used that. It took about 10-15 minutes to find the leak. It was a loose hose clamp on one for the hoses at the bottom of the reservoir. Give this a shot..
The Air Lift system is great for filling the car with coolant, it is helpless in pin-pointing the leak if you have one. The thing to do is to fill the car up with fluid. Use a Coolant System Pressure tester (any decent DIY must have one) and find the leak that way. Then fix it.
Just wanted to thank the board for their help. Getting a loaner pressurizer from Advance Auto was a great idea. It cost nothing and I don't think that the kit they lent me had ever been used before. Pressuriizing the system, It took basically no time at all to work out that the problem was the seal between the new water pump and the engine. Not sure why it didn't seal properly when I installed the new pump the first time, but after a quick trip to the dealer for another gasket and a little time to remove and replace the new pump, the problem was solved. The Airlift II could then pull 26 in. Hg of vacuum with no problem and I was able to quickly refill the system.
